Why does Mcgee keep getting carries?

He clearly is not getting it done. I realize Cody Johnson needs someone to spell him, but how about Obannaya? It seems clear to me that CJ is number one though Fozzy probably should be number one once he get's healthy. I'd put Fozzy at number two, CO at number three and Mcgee at number four. I just don't understand why we keep putting him in. I hope someone can explain it to me. What am I missing? I saw flashes last year and think he is probably better than he's playing so far, but he's just not showing me anything this year.

Frankly, other than possibly Fozzy, I don't see a true #1 running back on our roster. Need to see more of Fozzy to decide on him. Cody is a pretty good back though.

Also, our run blocking for our running backs at least did not seem superb today either. Colt managed to find gaping holes, but he has the defense guessing whether he is throwing or passing. Cody Johnson was having to make his yards after contact at the line of scrimmage.

I agree run blocking has been subpar. However, if the same guys are blocking for both Mcgee and Johnson and Johnson continues to get yards while Mcgee doesn't, that tells me Johnson is better. I don't know if it's vision or he's just getting lucky and the line blocks better for them. That's part of the reason for my post, to see if anyone else can explain it to me. I did see Mcgee have some good runs, but I didn't see anyone near him when that happened.

How come CO didn't play today?

McGee had three negative yardage runs today, none of which were his fault. Cody had none. Back that out and per carry average is the same.

Our running issues in a base offense are systemic.

Vondrell is serviceable.

We haven't blown anyone off the LOS as a running team in at least 3 seasons. J. Charles had a good season because he had the ability to break 50-80 yarders mixed in with his 1-2 yard mush runs.

Today was a little better and I think Cody looks the best so far.

At this point, our rushing game is McCoy converting broken pass plays to big gains. If that trend does not change during the powder-puff part of the season, it will result in a.) McCoy getting hurt of
Why was this statment not made when V young was running all over the damn place in 05??? Why is Colt so more prone to getting hurt then Vince? Hell he buffed up and made himself stronger since his injury.

Christ, this sounds like the same conversation as last year when people were calling for JC to be removed from his starter status and hand it over to McGee.

In my opinion I would prefer to see Cody Johnson start simply for the fact that his size and style of running lets him break those first hits and just pound the ball to tire a defense out.

Then bring in Vondrell and Fozzy on a tired defense and let them run wild.

I can't speak for everyone making the injury risk observation of Colt vs. Vince rushing, but to me it comes down to Vince demonstrating his Gumby skills early in his career and Colt getting knocked out of a game.

One handicap in developing the run game is the fact Chiles thinks he has to make an 80 yard play everytime he's in the game. So when John is in the game, the entire running game suffers.

Yesterday, Chiles had 10 carries. That was tops for all ball carries in the game. Colt had 9 carries and played a hell of a lot longer. Colt picks the times to run. At any rate, when Chiles is in the game, our running game suffers because he does not set up the offense for the other backs. He's too focused on himself. Chiles thinks he's on some high school team. He's out there for himself.

My point... You'd think that Chiles threat as a runner would allow him to hand the ball off, but he can't get it out of his mind to let someone else carry the ball. He's trying to do too much and not working the rest of the offense. Colt was in a lot longer and had one less carry. Duh!

Cody Johnson needs to start and needs to run the ball minimum 20 times a game. He should be spelled by CO. Not Vondrell. McGee is not running as hard as Colt. All the RBs need to watch film on Colt and get that attitude in their head or find another job on the team.

It's kind of like a sunk cost. The coaches have put so much into trying to make McGee their every down back that they are going to play him until he proves something to reaffirm their thinking.
They have to justify recruiting him and then making him their starting running back. They don't see Cody as an every down back. Chris either. In the end it will either be Vondrell or Fozzy. Fozzy has had injury problems ever since high school- so he won't see the field much if at all this season.
Vondrell is the man today, he'll be the man tomorrow and he'll be the man during the OU game. Deal with it.

McGee is actually a really good runner, but may not be a great running back. The thing I have always noticed is that McGee is not patient enough of a runner. Watch his film from last year and you will notice it the most. Once he has the ball he is full speed straight ahead, even when patients opens up big holes. He runs very hard north and south, which is good, but he needs to wait for blocks to develope a little more and not cut back inside so quickly.

If I had one person right now I would show film of to Vondrell, it would be the little guy from Oregon St. He was small but got big yardage because he waited for the lanes to open up and followed blockers. It is not good to dance around and wait all day, but McGee blasts into the back of his own blockers and then tries to steam roll everything in his path. Wait one second and look up, watch for a lane or a blocker before smashing up field.

McGee is very much a straight ahead runner. Seems to me his style is more suited for I-formation type sets. That being said, I wish they would throw that in occasionally, aside from in the very predictable, short yardage/goal line situations. Let him bang some out that way with some some play action passes sprinkled in to keep the line from being so stacked.
