Why did Dicus leave Lake Travis?

The recent hiring of the coach from Stephenville made me think about this. I'm not in Lake Travis ISD, just curious. The report I saw said Duncanville increased his salary by $12,000 (from like $92K to $104K), so that doesn't seem to be enough to go from a state champ with a returning QB to what is now a second-tier program at Duncanville. I don't get it.

I agree that something doesn't add up about Dicus leaving LT. There's got to be more to the story than what has been disclosed. Leaving a state champion with one of the best, if not the best QB in the nation for a non-competitive program? Anyone have any scoop on what the truth is?

There was a thread about this a few weeks ago. The rumor here was that the Superindendent at LT is an ******* and coaches and teachers are leaving in droves. Who knows if it is true.

The one piece of info that seemed most relevant was that Ron Schroeder resigned from Bastrop and had not been hired and was in no way linked to the job, which would normally seem like a shoe in. One poster even claimed that Ron Schroeder would "NEVER work at Lake Travis".

I'm just regurgitating what was in a previous thread though and would love to know more of the scoop.

"Duncanville won state in football in 1997 and has a phenominal athletics history in almost all sports"
-- HISTORY is the key word -- 1997??? Last year they won 3 games, and they haven't been good in recent times. The district has changed

Easy. Why do you begrudge another man for what he earns on the open job market? When you answer this question, I think we'll know why you asked yours.

Those guys who make that are typically in a big school district... or ar AD's. I have no problem with a head coach/AD banking that roll. I have no problem with a coach banking it either. Hell, lots of jobs get paid exhorbitant(sp) amounts of money. It's worse when professional athletes bank what they do in my opinion. I have no problem... and it's not a matter of them being a coach. They deserve it because they have to put up with a lot of junk... just ask around... lots of pressure...

Should tachers make more? Definitely...

Why do you think teachers in Texas are not allowed to have a union? Teachers in states where there is one bank a lot of cash. Sorry... different subject.

The top coaches make more than teacher because they have a talent that is relatively rare. Relatively few coaches get to that level, and there are far fewer coaches than there are teachers.

athletes make that much because their talent is rare and because the bring in huge amounts of money. AROD makes 25 mil because he could be the best we ever saw and because he puts people in the seats at "x" amount of dollars a ticket.

If a coach is just there to coach and teach PE, then I don't think that justifies him making 2-3 times as much as the calculus teacher teaching 5 or 6 classes and then grading and lesson plans.

And what about the other teachers who coach too? Not just football but other sports. Does the head football coach deserve 2-3x as much as them?

Coaches work longer hours, have more responsibility, and answer to a lot more people than teachers do. Often they not only coach, they teach, they wash laundry, they mark the field, they drive the bus, you name it. I've helped out a couple of times for my son's games doing piddly stuff and I'm amazed at all the hats these guys wear. I fully support teachers but I don't agree that the coaches are overpaid.

I would think that if the Super at LT is that tough to work for, the Stephenville coach wouldn't have taken the job, no matter that the Cavs are coming off of a championship.

Duncanville can be a very good 5-A program, with the right coach...there's a ton of players there, and Dicus can see that. LT will be 5-A in a few years, and participation is way up from five years ago, but long term, the prospects for success at Duncanville are probably better.

I'm not privy to what goes on in the LT district, but my impression is that Dicus just cashed in on his success at LT for what he considers a job with more potential.

LT has the potential to be the next Southlake, HP or Westlake.

Duncanville has more potential how? It is basically becoming an inner city school. How many inner city schools have become dynasties?

He was on probation (UIL) and was in hot water with the AD. AD and him did not see eye-to-eye. When AD and HC don't see eye-to-eye, HC loses.

I think Nuclear Bear nailed it. Duncanville is definitely going through some demographic shifts, but the school district has stayed pretty consistent in terms of quality and I see no reason to write it off anytime soon. From a coaching standpoint, he's got a great history, a HUGE student body to draw from and a lot of potential talent in the area. Why wouldn't a coach want that?

i played against Duncanville in HS and lived directly across from the high school for about 5 years while i was in law school and beginning my career. I am not speaking in code. Dunc HS is about 5 miles down the road from Carter HS. I am saying it is right next to South Dallas. Thus it is either on the verge of becoming an inner city school or it remains a typical large unfocused suburban school. neither of which translates to a dynasty.

It is no accident that LT played HP for the state title this year and last year Southlake played Westlake for the state title. These are schools located in affluent areas with highly successful and motivated communities. They are united and focused on achieving district wide athletic success. all of these communities have several retired athletes and upwardly mobile young professionals who give their kids every opportunity for success. the districts are also very unified and are "system" districts.

none of the above is the case for Duncanville.

It is no mistake Todd Reesing from LT and Chase Daniels from Southlake are the best QBs in the B12 North. Follow that with Riley Dodge, Matthew Stafford, Garret Gilbert and it become clear how talented these schools really are.

Nothing against Duncanville, it just doesnt have the built-in advantages LT does.

Ooops, excuse me. I thought this board was for Longhorn football, not petty high school stuff in Austin.

We recruit mostly Texas, and area high schools, and most of the folks who post here are from Texas. There's no separate category for high school "on-the-field", so as far as I'm concerned, if someone wants to post high school doings here, okay.

Guys:

The demographics don't support your statements indicating that Duncanville is an up-and-comer. Here's some limited information:

% Economically disadvantaged -- 54.4% (compared to 12.3% for Lake Travis ISD)

% of households with household income exceeding $100,000 -- 20% (compared to 45.5% for Lake Travis ISD)

Duncanville area is fine, used to be nicer, but is nowhere near Southlake, HP, Lake Travis, etc.

So has the student body's overall wealth become the hallmark of a strong program? There are plenty of examples to refute that throughout Texas HS sports history.

No, it hasn't as a hard rule, but many of the top programs are coming from the more affluent areas. Look at last year -- Lake Travis wins 4A and Katy wins 5A1. Euless Trinity wins 5A2 -- not as affluent, but more so than Duncanville.
