Whole Foods stores to stop using plastic bags...

So, the environmental wackos decided a few years ago that we shouldn't use paper bags because it was destroying the forests.

So we switched to plastic.

Now, the same environmental wackos tell us we should go back to paper, after pushing plastic bags down our throats for 15+ years.

I'm confused. Will the environmental wackos make up their friggin' minds??

By the way, plastic bags are great for picking up dog ****.

I am not an environmentallist by any means but I, too, started realizing what a waste all those plastic bags were. I was a sacker in high school and paper was great - you could stick boatloads of groceries in a bag if you knew what you were doing. Now you get 10 plastic bags for 12 items. It just seems wasteful. So, yeah, I've started using those reusable bags - I can fit more and I don't feel like I'm about to walk in the house and immediately throw away 10 bags.

My question for those who use reusable grocery bags instead of plastic bags - do you use reusable bags to carry your trash to the dump as well?

We recycle everything we can (our recycling bin is much larger than the trash bin) and generally dump trash cans directly into the bin. We did have a roll of *gasp* plastic bags that we used, but since we are on the last one now I assume we will buy a biodegradable option.

I really don't understand the animosity in this thread. I'm about as conservative as you can get on most issues, but this doesn't bother me one bit. It's a private company taking it upon themselves to eliminate plastic bags, something that we've come to realize after going away from paper. If this were some kind of law imposed on us, like what is going on in San Francisco, then I would have a problem with it. But this is what us capitalists always talk about - that being clean and green is good for business.

Look, I totally agree that plastic bags are bad. Hell, you see them floating in the bay down in South Texas all the time (along with diapers, but that's another story).

I'm just pointing out that the "save the trees" groups pushed for plastic bags back in the 80s and 90s. Now, they're having to flip flop like John Kerry and start pushing paper bags again.

It just shows that environmentalists, for all of their good intentions, really don't know what they're doing. Anything that is made of bio-degradable material is certainly better than a comparable product made of plastic. That's common sense. I don't know why we went away from the good ol' brown bag at grocery stores.

I use bio degradable dog crap bags!

Biodegradable Doggie Bags

When it comes time to pick up after your beloved pooch, choose a biodegradable bag instead of regular plastic. Otherwise, you are wrapping one of nature's quickest degrading substances in something that takes decades to break down.

The typical dog produces 274 pounds of waste each year, according to the USDA's Natural Resources Conservation Service. That's no small pile of poop. For neatness and sanitary reasons, most towns require owners to pick up after their pets, but what to do with it?

Unfortunately, if you put Lassie's waste in a plastic bag, it takes up to 100 years to decompose. Flushing it down the toilet is inconvenient, and can potentially cause problems in sewer systems because of its high amount of grit. Instead, use sturdy paper, or the biodegradable offerings from several companies. The corn-based BioBags, for example, are certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute to break down in a matter of days. They work very well in communities that have aerobic landfills that are churned up. True, biodegradable products don't work near as well in closed, anaerobic landfills, but they certainly won't hurt.

Even better is to compost the biodegradable bags, and their contents, at home or in a local community garden. Experts recommend keeping a separate setup for composting animal waste, and never use the resulting soil on anything edible, in case some pathogens survive the process. The best practice is to ensure optimum temperatures and layering, which you can learn about here.

I think it is a great idea. They still offer paper.

I agree with Johnny for once.
