Who does Jonathan Gray remind you of?

agree, renegade. johnathan is considerably faster than ced and more fluid. i read quotes, though, by a couple of hs coaches comparing johnathan to ced, and, as i said, i couldn't see the similarity until i saw footage of aledo in a tight game. then i could see the opportunist at work, and that did remind of benson. i hope he has some of ced's ability to contort himself to make it hard for a tackler to get hold of him. ced was one of the best i ever saw at that.

ramonce was terrific, but he was a situational talent. johnathan has the every down usefulness of benson with considerably more speed but probably not the raw toughness. that's where malcolm will shine.

malcolm is big and tough with very good speed and some wiggle and can catch, and johnathan is fast and fluid with great hands and can make the tough yard when he needs to. great, great pairing.

i had to youtube clinton portis but i can sure see what you are saying. johnathan isn't thick like portis, but i'm sure portis wasn't very thick as a junior in high school either. johnathan's elusive running style and speed do remind very much of portis.

good point, uninformed. that guy was a delight to watch. every time i saw him i wished to the dickens we had him.

I won't join the debate, but I will say that the Aledo offense reminds of better days when we effectively utilized a TE.

Those were the days...

The highlights remind me a lot of Malcomb Brown highlights, though he catches a lot more passes. Like Brown he has great vision and makes great cuts, seems to shed contact well and then be able to consistently outrun the pursuit. I see Gray as suitable to be an every down back, capable of running the ball between the tackles but most dangerous when he gets the ball in space. Both will be fun to watch in the Harsin offense.

Is that supposed to be Tony Dorsett meets Eric Metcalf?

Hope so, but those are two extremely fast backs, with Metcalf being a freak in terms of moves and speed. I have no idea how Gray runs against a stopwatch, but just on the eye test (watching highlights only) he doesn't seem Eric Metcalf fast. (Looking at Metcalf's highlights, he leaves NFL players in the dust more dramatically than Gray leaves HS players behind.) The whole reason Darryl Green tackling Dorsett from behind is a legend is that it was believed that Dorsett might have been the fastest player in the whole NFL.

Do you guys have an idea, either from seeing him in person or knowing his track speed, that Gray is likely a speed merchant at the college level?

With Jamaal, it was easy to know, since he was already proven to be one of the fastest hurdlers for his age in the world, and had run some very fast sprints on a track, too.

vyf, over on 247 there is a thread by brownrecluse where he reports johnathan turned in a 10.61 100m recently. someone asked how fast that is, and br provided a list of times from the track coaches assn website, and 10.61 would put him in a tie for fourth place among non-senior tracksters this season,

i don't think anyone expects him to turn in 4.29 40s, but some say the 10.61 certainly supports that he should be capable of 4.4 times pretty consistently.

that's more than fast enough, of course, particularly since he is not a small guy.

what i've seen of his in the clips is a kid whose speed and acceleration, together with excellent vision and balance, allows him to play a style that doesn't rely on darting or contorting to make people miss. whether he can play like that at the next level is yet to be seen, of course.

after watching the clips from that tough game with lake travis, i see him now as a budding cedric benson-style runner with a good deal more speed and not quite the need to pound it out like ced did.

depending on how he and malcolm develop, we could have a ricky williams type bruiser with speed and a faster version of ced benson on the same team. make me smile.

Talking about Eric Metcalf, I am still waiting for another one of those to come along. One of my favorite horns ever.
