who at ESPN will get fired for LHN?

No one at ESPN will get fired.

Does anyone remember a start-up network about 20 years ago that planned to broadcast sports 24/7? That little network that virtually everyone doubted at the beginning is now the dominant sports broadcaster, perhaps worldwide.

For those who believe that ESPN overpaid for the LHN, study history. In three years I am betting that you will look back and concede that the creation of the network was a game-changing event in the broadcasting of college sports.
 
You would think it would be a bust if it were only offered in the austin metro area. They need a large subscriber base in order to make $$. The fact that they only have 1 small cable company offering in Austin is a huge disappointment.

You really have a knack for missing the point someone is trying to make and replying with totally irrelevant information.

I paid less for my rose bowl tickets each time Texas went out there than a do for tickets to home games.

But to respond to your point (which misses mine): the Rose Bowl was outstanding for fans so of course people loved it. Most fans can't see the LHN and then there are those like you taht talk about the $30M like it helps them and other fans in some way. I don't see it that way since athletics had plenty of money before and that money doesn't make my seats and cheaper or my donation any less.

I don't either, but I'll bet it isn't the .40 or whatever ESPN is asking per subscriber for LHN.

Me too, which is why I donate more to the LF than I need to for my football and basketball tickets. But you didn't donate the $300 million. That is money the athletic department didn't need and so far it has hurt the fans because it has cost 99% of them 2 games that they otherwise would have been able to watch. And for what? So the athletic department can have another however many million a year over their closest competitor.

And your point about the game not being sold out is a stupid one, too. I go to every game, but I'd still watch them again on DVR and the practice stuff most people can't see.

Maybe things will change, but so far ESPN paid Texas too much and if they hadn't Texas would still be rolling in piles of cash and fans would actually get some benefit out of the channel.

You can see my response above. I probably donate more $ and more % of my income than you or Taps, but that isn't the point. Why should I be excited about Texas getting an extra how ever many million if they were already so far ahead of the competition in that area and it makes games harder to see for the fans, which is the exact opposite of the reason it was started? When Belmont first started looking at the idea, it was about access for the fans and getting teh brand out there. Most didn't even think it would be profitable.

It isn't about me. I have tickets to the games. It is about those who can't watch it because of ESPN and Texas' greed.

Nobody will get fired at ESPN for LHN starting slow bc they knew it was a 20 yr decision when they negotiated the contract w/TX and IMG.

ESPN will leverage the other channels in the Disney family (which owns ESPN, ABC, Disney Channel, ABC family etc.) when contract renewal time comes up with the TV providers like TWC, Comcast, ATT , Direct TV etc.

ESPN is a part of a $40 Billion media conglomerate that is the proverbial 800lb gorilla when it comes to CFB sports.

Look how DirecTV rolled over to Fox yesterday at the prospect of losing the Fox shows on TV via DirectTV to get an idea of how the LHN negotiations will play out.

The LHN is a new model for third tier TV rights that will provide ample content for ESPN to add to their family of channels. Florida has a $100M deal in place and OU will start their SoonerVision channel next July according to Boren.

BYUtv is available in 61M homes is an example of how nedia and sports marketing has a long reach on cable, satellite and online distribution.

In todays TV and internet media world the consumer is used to having its news, sports and enteratinment content available in an instant. Many UT fans are frustrated that they can't access their new toy now but it will come.

3rd tier content providers such as LHN as designed to meet that demand.

The LHN will be just fine and on most cable and satellite TV providers as soon as the distribution contracts come up for renewal. ESPN knew this before they signed the agreement with TX and IMG.

ESPN knows it can make more $$$ off of the LHN 24/7 model than offering 1 or 2 $30 PPV games a year on GamePlan.

Content is King and ESPN now controls the content on LHN.

For Bronco, it appears Oprah's OWN was asking anwhere from $0.21 to $0.50/sub and cable and satellite companies were balking at higher than the $0.07 to $0.12/sub Discovery Health received. I am not sure where it finally worked out. Here are a couple of articles about OWN:

The ceaseless promos for LSU vs Alabama is almost as good of publicity for them as the LHN is for Texas. Almost, but not quite. After this weekend they fall back into obscurity, while we live on through the omnipresent LHN!
 
this is from a couple of years ago but this gives you an idea of what other channels cost to the providers.

So you can see, from these numbers, ESPN is asking for a little less than what Fox charges for channels like FX and more than the Big10 network.

It'll take some time and that $0.40 number will probably come down but it'll get picked up eventually.
