Where to buy a suit?

I agree on the shoes being extremely important. And it is much harder now than it used to be. Until about 6 years ago, you could drop about $125 on a pair of wing tips from a reputable company and you were done. Then everyone went split toe, and wings were pretty much out.

Now, everyone is wearing shoes with a more square toe. They are harder to buy b/c there is no "standard". The advice I have is to bring a sophisicated woman with you as men's shoe shopping is now more similar to woman's shoe shopping than ever. Spend a lot of money. Don't buy two similar pairs of shoes like you could in the past. If they look like your father's shoes, don't buy them.

anyone ever been to Bluefly.com?

It's like an online version of Off Fifth, or Last Call Neiman Marcus. You can find Hugo Boss, Zegna, Armani, Prada, Donna Karan etc for upwards of 80% off. Of course in some cases that's still ******* expensive, but you can find great deals nonetheless. If you're in to this type of clothing (a bit more trendy and stylish vs. conservative business suits/shoes), then you have to check this site out.

Trendy may work some places, but it is the exception not the rule. Stick with conservative styles and colors, especially if you are interviewing with an established company. Your suit is your uniform. You want to set yourself as part of the team.

Good Luck

I find that my suit of choice is nike wind suit, the fact that i coach youth basketball probably has a good bit to do with it, and I agree shoes are the most important part. Don't try and go cheap on shoes - quality is important

My fav is my royal blue velour Adidas sweat suit. I also agree with shoes. Gotta get a pair of Adidas shell toes.

I went to Jos. A. Bank today and bought a suit and a bunch of other stuff, too. I actually intended to go to Herald's first, but I happened upon Jos A. Bank in the Arboretum, so I went there and was very pleased.

I bought a nice dark dark navy jacket and pants;
7 shirts- 3 white, 3 blue, 1 pinstripe- I took home 2 of them today in one style, the other 5 had to be special-ordered to fit me more precisely;
4 ties- 2 red ones, one green/blue stripe, and a yellow one;
some nice suspenders;
2 pairs of navy socks;
a pair of oldschool Cole Haan black leather shoes;
a black leather belt
----

I think that's all I got. I have to go back in two weeks to pick up the jacket and pants, as well as some of the shirts.

All in all, I spent just under 900 for all of that stuff, which is less than I expected for all I got- due to sales and just charming my way to discounts.

I probably could have held off on the shoes (not discounted at 155 bucks) but they were calling to me. Compared to Bruno Magli or some other names, that is cheap... and they look very smooth.

I probably could have held off on the suspenders, too, but I just really wanted them.

If you ever go to Europe, UK or Canada, the airports are a great place to shop if you are looking for expensive stuff. You can get Hermes ties for about $100 at the duty free shops...sometimes as low as $80. You can get ferragamo for a little less.

I get all of my shirts at Thomas Pink at Heathrow. They are about half of what you would pay in the US. I bought my first one about 4 years ago and it still looks new.

Bally and Gucci are also in a lot of the airports, but I don't wear their stuff.

Suits are a little tough to buy in an airport.

Most people seem to opt for liquor at duty free.
