When you were at UT, What were the top clubs/bars?

Good call. You used to be able to sneak in (sometimes) through the small window into the mens room of Liberty Lunch. There was some white guy reggae band that played there a ton we saw all the time. Their best song was a cover of 96 Tears. Anyone recall the name of that band?

Who can tell? Many ska bands. The Skanks? The Lotions? I’m pretty sure Joe King’s guitar player was in the Mysterians on the original. That song is the Joe King sound.

It was an insanely popular song to cover. Texas Tornadoes had a great cover of it back in the day.

But 96 Tears was distinctively their show closer/best song. People waited on it. Plus white guy lead singer with long dreads who always wore the same dirty, loose-fitting gym shorts (I think they were grey) with a tank top usually. Was suggested above it was "The Lotions," which sounds right.

I finally googled it and the poster above nailed it. There was more info on them than i expected. Sadly, or perhaps not, the only image has pants, not the shorts. Must have been cold that day. Austin's first reggae band - and I guess I was there for it

This is a latter day reunion - so definitely not at Liberty Lunch

Great article in The Alcalde this month commemorating Tri-Towers that is being torn down which mentions Renegade, Papers, and Tricky Mickey's. The author lived there in 1983, same year I came to UT.

spent a year in Tri-Towers one night after a Sixth Street excursion---didn't sleep a wink, NO A-C!! lived on 11th floor Jester West freshman year--thought that was gonna be a special time with the 'Horns going undefeated, only to lose in the CB!! Thanks a lot, Craig Curry:brickwall:

I stumbled on a couple pics of Austin punk in the 1980s

I am pretty sure this guy worked in Kinkos on the drag (Gary Floyd of the Dicks at Voltaire’s Basement in 1984)
At first he had hair, at one point he took some electric shears and cut a single path through his hair. He then parked a matchbox car in the "driveway" I have no idea how he got it to stick there.
Later, he just cut it all off for the fat, bald look

The Butthole Surfers were from San Antonio, I think

Lynda Stuart and Rene Miller in case anyone knows them

Nice dumpster dive to resume this thread! I was at UT in the late 80s and early 90s, and we had a pretty straightforward routine most nights if on 6th:
  • Start with shots at Touche' to get things going
  • Maggie Mae's drinking and dancing
  • Drunken sing-alongs at Ivory Cats
Other spots I remember frequenting were Antone's, Continental Club, Lizard Lounge and La Zona Rosa. Broken Spoke was also an occasional stop when we put our Ropers on (RIP James White).

My roommate and I lived in what we used to call "college town" which was all the apartments off Riverside and Oltorf on the PV and SR shuttle routes, and The Back Room was nearby but a less frequent stop as the music (and crowd), at least when we would drive by with the windows down, was usually a bit "harder" than we liked.

Great memories!

I was on the WC route my first year (83-84) and on the PV route the next year before moving north due to all the crime out there in those days. The cops used to call Riverside-Pleasant Valley-Lakeshore the "devil's triangle".

Phil that was my first year and I had the same route off Riverside. Like you I moved into a house off of 51st my 2nd year.

I'll never forget the first apartment we had. My roommate was transferring in and needed his last semester grades to confirm acceptance so we didn't start looking for a place until late May/early June and, back then at least, that meant anything remotely "nice" was leased. We wound up in a huge complex on Burton Drive just off Oltorf. That first year was memorable - the water bugs would scatter each morning when you flipped on the kitchen light, you could feel the sun on the interior walls because of the Kleenex-like insulation in the walls, and the guy downstairs would stand in his doorway with his pet boa constrictor and greet you. That winter the pipes in the ceiling froze and burst, sending water pouring into our kitchen and living room. We had to stay elsewhere for six weeks while that all got repaired.

After a year we moved to a nicer spot off Royal Crest for six months, then he left Austin and I wound up in a newer construction efficiency on Wickersham until graduation. Both complexes were much better, cleaner, and certainly safer, but that first place was my favorite. Total dump, but it had a great pool and game room, and we had the best parties there. To this day my buddy and I laugh and recall the great memories we made there.

I was in Austin 79-82 and was too cheap to party much. My summer jobs hauling hay paid for books, tuition and worth the money meals and outings. Chelsea Street pub was great with the 2 for 1.margaritas, but they nsisted on bringing them to you both at once. Thw Siver Dollar North attracted some top acts.. I remember two stepping to Alabama out there on an enormous dance floor. Another great outing for me was taking a late night stroll through the State Capitol and catching a big after midnight supper at Katz's Delicatessen.

First bar I ever went to in Austin when I arrived in '83 was The Silver Dollar for nickel beer night then we went over to The Lumber Yard next door.

Nobody went to Toulouse and 6th Street Country Club? To be honest, 6th St CC was kinda lame but there were a lot of hot chicks that hung out there.

Nice. Also fond back then of the Margaritas at Baby Acapulco and Mexican Martinis at Trudys.
Baby Acapulco had HUGE margaritas. There was a place called Jaime’s—I don’t know if it’s still there— that also had good Ritas. Fun times.

I'm with you Chop - now 30 years later, Baby A's is no longer a spot I would choose but back in the day on a limited college budget, those margaritas did the trick!

Louie's Bar across from Scholz's Garden. There's a parking garage there now. 45 cent Longnecks

The Broken Spoke - good dance hall

The Armadillo - lots of bands played there

Hoffbrau Steakhouse - I hear the quality of the steaks has fallen off. please say it ain't so!

Louie's Bar across from Scholz's Garden

Home of the Jacks & Queens pinball machine, which you better not be on at 430, when Banking Commissioner Robert Stewart arrived, because that was his Pearl beer and quarter on the machine.

The two clubs I went to the most were Antone's to see Soulhat and Liberty Lunch to see everyone else.
