What's your favorite movie?

Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

mood, filming locations, music, pacing, tone, casting, story, drama, tension, spectacle, etc.

pitch perfect.

Jaws would be a close second, but Jaws doesn't grab me emotionally like Close Encounters does.

I'll show my age -

Gone with the Wind
The Graduate
Animal House
Forrest Gump
Shawshank Redemption
Field of Dreams
A League of Their Own

My favorites are all over the place, but are the ones I own and watch often, or when they are on TV I stop and watch. Most of the time they are movies that make me feel good at the end, or like Texanne I have some sort of sentimental connection to.

Sort of short list:
The Man Who Would Be King
Finian's Rainbow (Francis Ford Coppola does a musical)
Oliver (the musical)
Hope Floats
Whale Rider
Gone With the Wind
Patton
West Side Story

and Harry Potter

Oh - and add Shane and Old Yeller!

Casablanca
Rushmore
Scarface
LA Confidential
The Last Picture Show
Hud
Ninotchka

Saving Private Ryan is a good movie but vastly overrated.

Agreed! Even more stirring when you consider that Casablanca was filmed and released in 1942, during the German occupation of France.

Man that's tough to have to select just one.

I'll go with "Downfall"

It really depends on my mood.

Lonesome Dove

Then...
Hoosiers
The Big Lebowski
Goodfellas
Heat
Casablanca
A River Runs Through It
Caddyshack
Dumb and Dumber
Batman Begins
Major League
Empire Strikes Back
Rounders
No Country For Old Men
Shawshank Redemption
