Husker- I agree that the 71 team was great relative to its era, but there is no way they would hang with today's teams. Those guys would just get blown off the ball in today's game.

I agree parkerco. Today's athletes have better facilities and improved coaching techniques and training. Even the smaller schools are up to par much better than years ago.

What does Herbstreit say? Not that it matters, I'd just like to know his justification for disagreeing.

1995 Nebraska was the epitome of a "rolling bag of butcher's knives" on offense, and that defense was stout, too. I think fans on the coasts (in particular) don't necessarily have a good feel for how utterly dominant that option attack was. They think "Notre Dame" or "Air Force", and it's just not the same thing. Nebraska didn't run the option with smart, undersized athletes to even the playing field, they ran it with top athletes and obliterated anything that got in their way.

They certainly did have the personnel to beat them. The key for Miami to win such a hypothetical game would have been if the defensive coaching staff could have come up with the necessary schemes and adjustments to beat them. Not saying they couldn't, but that 01 Miami defense went relatively untested as far as schematics go (then again, so did the 95 Huskers).
