What was your first car?

This is not mine but it was basically the same model I think. 70-something Blue Chevy Luv. I put some wide tires and white spoke rims on it like a gangsta yo. Fat speakers behind the bench seat.

I was a sophomore in high school, worked at Montgomery Wards (tire dept) to pay for it. Livin the dream.

I sure could have used your help, Dio. I went through some tires for sure. Gas as well.

72 Nova, exact color, with the not so powerful 307 engine. To remedy that an over sized camshaft, Holley double-pumper carb and headers were put on as well as some other adjustments. Those did the trick. Between accelerations and burn outs my gas efficiency and tire tread went out the window. It had the AM radio in it so a boom box was added. Batteries quickly became costly. The lift on the one below is about what I had. I had Crager SS rims.

oh, I ran 60's all around. This NoVa, went.

55 Chevy Convertable, turquoise blue with white leather interior. Purchased about my Junior year at UT (1963-1964).

Thanks, Dio. I worked my *** off for it too. It was a family car but nooooo way would my Dad ever give me a car. I had to buy it. I had to pay 200 bucks over Blue Book value. His point was that I knew the car had been taken care of, serviced regularly, etc. I could take my chances on another car but could pay dearly for it. Dammit. I also had to show that I had paid my insurance 3 months ahead. If not, I did not get to drive until I had it. Not one month, 3. I had to show responsibility. That was super tough to do too!!!

That my parents bought me...

Who's jealous?

That I paid for on my own:

I was so happy when I took that picture. Right before the '09 NC game... :/

Point of order, that looks suspiciously like a truck, Dion. I thought the thread was about your first car, I will have to change my post if we include trucks.

Technicalities, learn to love them. :smile1:

Don't judge me, I saw this as a child and it stuck in my mind.

'62 Chevy Impala sw! "The Ambulance." Our family car, I inherited it when my mom got a new '67 Buick Electra 225. First year of the 327. Was fun in high school to lay down the back seat and take a date to the drive in. I was always jealous of guys who had cool cars, but it worked for me. Had it for a few years, sold it in '70 for $700.

Nope, Dad bought it new, when I was a little kid. I was there, drove to the Red River and back on the test drive.

I got it from him, when I got my driver's license, in the 70's.

People kept coming to the house wanting to buy it, it became a classic car.

Finally sold it, when I went to college at UT. Helped pay for tuition.

Then I got this, this color too, except mine was a hard top, no sun roof, I don't remember them having a sun roof. That is even the right color interior, was called deerskin, I believe.

They called this "metallic orange," but I thought of it as burnt orange. There are a few people on this board that saw and rode in that car.

The truck I mentioned was a 1959 Chevy Apache. It was beige, with yellow cattle frames. We hauled a lot of horses and cows with that truck.

I learned to drive with it, it was hard to drive, had a post shift and foot starter, on the floorboard. I logged a lot of pasture miles with that truck. When I was still very young, my dad would put me on his lap and let me steer, that steering wheel was so huge to me then.

It looked like this except a different color and those cattle frames.

After I turned 16 I drove the family truckster, a 1968 metallic lime green Ford Country Sedan 400 CID station wagon for about 6 months before I had enough saved for a significant down payment on my first car. A 1971 Ford Pinto - grabber blue 2000 CC or 2.0 - 4 banger with a 4 speed stick. It cost about $2,200 new.

It was pretty tame to say the least but I could afford it and I was glad to have my own wheels. I later altered the air intake, added a Hooker header and duel glass pack mufflers to help it breathe, add hotter spark plugs + a couple of things, so it growled nicely and was much more frisky. I also added slotted aluminum mag wheels and some wide white letter BF Goodrich tires. I don't have a photo handy so I will just post a Pinto that I Googled that reminds me of my little beast, although it is a 1973 with the big bumpers:

That Monte Carlo is so pimp it's crazy. You can't step out of that without bell bottoms and platform shoes.

Yup and I hear KC & The Sunshine Band - Get Down Tonight on that AM radio. White walls and wire wheels but it is burnt orange. Snek's was burnt orange also.

I have no photos of it, but imagine this car but bird turd brown. It was a 1985 Ford Tempo. There was one special thing about it though - it was a diesel, which made it fun to pull up next to massive 18-wheelers at truck stops to get fuel. That always got some funny looks. It got about 47 mpg around town and about 55 mpg on the highway, and it was extremely reliable - had well over 300K miles on it when I finally got rid of it. And even then, the engine was fine. The transmission is what ultimately failed on it and made me decide to get rid of it.

It also didn't help that it wasn't much of a chick magnet. lol

Hehe we had an Impala as a family car for a few years. But the first car I "owned" was an 84 Nissan Stanza (on which I learned to drive stick.) My first actual car purchase was a Nissan Pulsar - which had the benefit of sort of looking like a sports car while having none of the engine power that insurance companies consider a sports car.

NBH7 - Snek would be impressed with that photo of you and Trixie by your pimpmobile!

Here is a photo I found of NBH7's favorite musical group from the 70's. He had all their 8-track tapes in his car:

Ok, I will admit to owning a pair of plaid bell bottoms and one pair of platform shoes in high school. At 6' 3" they were a chore to walk around on.

I thought it was ok, because our 6' 6" center on our basketball team, also had some and he pulled it off.

I have very straight hair, so the afro was a no go.

My uncle had a dog named Trixie, till this day, I have never known a girl named Trixie.

I listened to Country radio by day and Rock at night.

Some of you might remember WLS out of Chicago, we pulled that in at night, most of us listened to it.
It had "boogie checks," and the big DJ, was known as "John Records Landecker, Records truly is my middle name,"
he always said.

I never had an 8 track, my older brother did.

I heard ABBA on the radio, but hardly a favorite, "I heard the guns Fernando," and ran the other way. I was a big Southern Rock guy, "play some Skynyrd man," but enjoyed groups like "Chicago." Once in Austin I was indoctrinated into all that "Outlaw and Rock scene. From Waylon to SRV, then MTV came on the scene and changed everything. Loved most of those 80's bands, whether they had big hair or not.

I listened to WBAP out of the metroplex area, and I worked at our local radio station, as a DJ. It was KNBO and was a country station. I think some of you wiseguys can figure out the call letters, for that station.

Later me and another guy had a country radio show, on the UT radio station, when I was a student. Went to many places in Austin, from the old Armadillo, Back Room, Silver Dollar, The Skillet, and of course frequented the "Broken Spoke." James White, the owner and I are still good friends, I use to go out to his ranch a lot for parties and things.
James said I was good for business, because I was a good dancer. He would always have me dance with all the girls from out of state or town, celebrities, whoever. If they didn't know how, I had to teach them, some were already good.

I did a little of everything and of course baseball, can't forget that.

Now look how far I have fallen. Moderating you people. :smile1:

WorsterMan..White with red/silver interior. Red "mood lights" shining on the floor of the interior. Baby moon hubcaps vs mags. Not quite as nice as the pic you posted.

Could not locate a photo of a white convertible - only the 2 door hardtop, but I did spot an interior that is similar to what you described on a white convertible. Memories...

The interior is just like the one I had except the my steering wheel and sun visors were red. No seat belts. Love that style. GM should do a remake of that car like Ford did with Tbird and Chrysler did with Charger/Challenger.
