What should the USA do in Syria

I am surprised this topic hasn't been brought up here.
IF ( and it hasn't been proved 100% yet) Assad gassed his own people what should the USA do?

What if it turns out the rebels gassed the people?

I don't think we should do anything. since France Germany UK Australia etc say they want to go in , let them.

it is not worth any American getting even a sunburn and not worth a cruise missile UNLESS the other countries pay for them

I have agreed with BO's policy up until he started talking about missile strikes.
Please let him review history and stay the F out of it

stay out. killing your citizens with gas sounds just as bad as killing your citizens with guns.

It is premature to address this topic. HF protocol dictates that we wait to see what Obama does. Then, those of us who are liberal praise his actions, while those of us who are conservative bash them.

Geesh.

IF BO announces he won't send a single person or one missile then both sides of the aisle will applaud him.

Viva la France or Rule Britannia

ANYTHING but USA USA

If the Syrian government did this, I think we should bomb them. I do not want to use ground troops.

The wild card for me though (and something that I cannot determine) is whether toppling the current government gives us a worse alternative. I think the main rebel faction is sort of a Muslim Brotherhood equivalent. I really don't like helping these guys.

paso
good point
but we may never know who really did gas.
It makes no sense for Assad to have done it
but he may not have any sense

so far there are semi credible people reporting both sides did it

as far as who takes over if or when assad goes
can you name one muslim country in this " Arab Spring" with a good outcome?
Egypt may be the closest and that is still really iffy.
all the others aren't turning out well for the people in the country especially minorities and long term for us

Let Syria have Obama. He'll make sure that that country is irrelevant too.

What we should do - nothing

There are no good outcomes. If we bomb or cruise missile it will acomlish nothg, certainly wont get rid of chem weapons even with eprfect intelligence.

Both sides are our enemies.

We are backed into a (red) corner.

Spend the 1.5m USD per cruise missile on refugee relief if you really believe we need to do something.

What should Putin do in Syria? What is the idiot Obama going to do after Putin launches air strikes against the rebels?
Not possible?

I got two issues with this whole thing:

1) is there an outcome that politically is good for the US? It doesn't appear there is, as both sides are not likely to be great allies

and

2) what are we going to do? History shows we will lob a few missiles...great so we half ourselves into another war. Was (or any combat) is not something you can half ***, you have to be all in or not at all.

In reply to:

How does our firing a dozen or so cruise missiles get us into a war?

I am beginning to think that we should just abstain, but I do not get the argument that firing some cruise missiles at military targets or suspected chemical weapons locations gets us into a war.

How?

We do not have to do anything else or more particularly if Assad ceases to nerve gas his people.

This isn't exactly Cambodia in 1969-70.

I do agree that the likelihood of a good outcome or of bombing doing anything positive is relatively remote.

Your analogy fails miserably. Syria has no means to respond.

And the polling I saw indicates that the public wants a response if Syria used chemical weapons. I do not think this should determine what we do, but the support is there.

paso
the last poll I saw, from reuters said only 25% support us intervening in Syria even if chems were used
that poll was from aug 25.

is there a newer poll or a different poll out?

Let us try something novel for a few years like peace. Get out of Afganistan and work on our many problems at home. We can be energy independent so we don't need these constant conflicts. God knows we could use the money here. Next we can try to do something about our own corrupt government.

the ujs is being urged on by britain and france, who collectively have never made a correct move in the middle east.

Let us join this great new crusade and win friends all over the place.

But I guess we have to do it----our saudi friends want to be rid of the syrian dctator.

reinstate the draft, draft all the congress and the president and let them taste some combat.

what he ^ said
Plus there are as many " reports" that the rebels are the ones who used the WMD as there are that Assad did
and for sure the rebels have more to gain if they can get the US to bomb anything of Assad's

so please BO do NOT do this
