What kind of home audio system do you have?

This is the site for the really high end audio snobs, I'm envious of the $500k systems some of these guys own.

My pride and joy is my Rega Planar 25 turntable with Rega Super Elys cartridge.

I have an Adcom 535 amp, which is an offshoot of the 555.

Nelson Pass amps are a joy to own, but I've gotten into DIY audio and he is a big contributor to the cause. My first amp will be what he calls Burning Amp. Yep, they like to run hot! So I will be building my own very soon. That boom you here in Round Rock toward the end of the year will probably come from my amp.

Japanese transistors are some of the best, which my 535 uses heavily. Sadly, bit by bit, the components that made some of these 'classics' are disappearing. The one plus note is that capacitors and resistors seem to have gotten better for the most part.

I just modded my 535 and I get improved sound out of it with better bass performance.

You're right digitalhorn that DIY audio is fun and you get much more for your $$$. I have an old Halfler DH-500 that my stepdad built and modified and I enjoy opening it up just to look at it sometimes.

Is there still build it yourself audio? I remember heathkit, but I think they went out of business?

A long time ago I built an electronic crossover and a subwoofer. It was pretty good system. However, at some point, I developed a grounding problem in the crossover and blew up my Carver amp. Fun times.

Carver, Hafler...I remember those amps. My best buddy in college bought a Carver and the old Arbor Cinema used Hafler amps. I still think those amps had the best sound at the Arbor and I wasn't too thrilled when they later switched to dbx. The impact when they put the volume to '11' when the THX logo appeared would set the hairs of my arms on end.

There is no Heathkit per se that sells all types of kits like in the old days. But there are many published schematics if you want to start from scratch. Also, on the forum diyaudio.com, they have group buys and some of the guys design a pcb, give you a shopping list, and you build to your hearts content.

I redesigned the power supply board for my GFA-535 and ended up selling my 3 spares to a couple of members. So if you look around you may find something you would like to build yourself.

So I'm not the only dinosaur? Good to know. I have the exact Marantz 2270 pictured in hooklahoma's post. Works great to this day. I keep looking at inexpensive home theatre setups to get five or seven channel sound for movies, but haven't been able to pull the trigger on a relatively cheap set-up that would eliminate my good old stereo. It may get moved to a new unfinished room formed from enclosing the old garage, though.
Then I could actually use it once in a while, which is difficult with Ms.Accurate's objections to cranking up The Who Live at Leeds vinyl while she is attempting to watch TV. Yes, I need a man-cave. Need to finish off that new room.
