What Is Your Dog Worth?

I have a lot of time and money invested in mine. Having said that, there has to be a point that I would have to draw the line for his quality of life if something happened to him. I wouldn't be able to put an amount on it, just what would feel right at the time.

He's a great dog and I dread the day he is no longer with me. I'm trying to make the most of each day his is with me and maximize those to the fullest.

I'm sorry for your loss. I can't imagine losing my 3.5 year old black lab, but I know at some point it will happen.

I would probably spend anything to prolong his life, but if they're suffering, it's the right thing to do to put them down. Especially if their future is not that bright.

Thanks all for the thoughts. prayers, and replies. It has been hard since this came on so suddenly. This is the third time in 30+ years that we have had to put a dog down, all goldens. The first two we kind of knew it was coming, and we did not have to face thoughts of huge expenditures either.

Pulling through this bout of pnuemonia, Abby still would have had good quality of life. But each subsequent bout of pneumonia would have cost us $500-1000 or more each time. That was where we started looking at how much we should/could spend total.

We have a little Pekingese (about 12 years old or so) that Lostdaughter picked up as a stray a couple years ago. Duke seems lost without Abby, and I can see how much, now, Duke took a lot of his cues from Abby since his eyesight is failing. It makes me even more sad.

We will look at another dog eventually, I think. In the past we got new dogs within a couple weeks. I am just not ready this time, and am in no hurry to replace just yet.

Thanks again. You all are the best! (Cue James Taylor!) You just call out my name, and you know wherever I am...

sorry for your loss. My family lost dogs always. Consequently I no longer try to have a dog. Maybe some time will try again.

I am so sorry that you lost Abby. Lost my beloved bulldog, Samson in early June...know how you feel...spent about $1K doing stuff for him at the end too...

Prayers for you and your family...

We've spent up to $3,000 for two ACL reconstructions on our little Corgi/Jack mix. I really don't know ho much I would spend because we have not reached that point before. I can only tell you that the honest answer inside my mind is that I would spend every last dollar that I have. Facing hard reality could certainly test this.

lostman, so sorry.

My dog, I would spend my life's savings. If it is a living breathing creature and I have chose to care for it, I would pay anything.

Is that Gulf State Vet in Houston? If I am not mistaken that is like the best place in the world for specialist work. Their work is known far and wide.

Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists, yes. They were very good. E-mail updates, come visit your dog any time, very caring, very willing to spend as much time as you need with them and your pet.

In answer to your question, whatever it takes. I was raised in a "disposable pet" household however, since getting married I've truly come to love our dog like he is a child.

Our dog Cooper suffered a Spinal Embolism a couple of years ago the week before Christmas. He ended up at GCVS and thankfully he made a full recovery it was a small and fairly pricey Christmas Miracle. However, I would say that the cost were less than I expected given all that was done.

That place is truly allsome and they work miracles every day, but as my time working in EMS taught me sometimes it's just someone's time. Sorry for your loss, I know it's gotta be hard, but @ least she's at peace now. Your family is in our prayers.

I grew up with dogs and have had at least one my entire adult life, all rescues. Very, very spoiled rescues. That said, I do not see my self spending more than $500 on vet bills to save one of their lives. When it comes right down to it, there are far more important things to spend money on, and other pound mutts to rescue.

I just thought we needed another dog thread at the top of the board.
