What I got from the UTEP game

A few points I got from the game:

Bad:
Defense:
*Our DT and DE need to get a hand on the QB. They are AMAZING at rushing, but pressure isn't enough. Get the sack damnit!
*Our entire team needs to learn to HOLD ON! How many broken tackles did their rushers have? Was it me, or did our rush-D do worse than our pass-D? Their rushers looked phenomenal.
*Defensive coverage was sub-par. I admit, they have impressed me more than I expected for a VERY fresh team, but there are too many completions. Luckily, they're not getting burnt as much as they were @ FAU. I was SICK of big passing plays!
*Big hits.. We're not busting heads as much as I would like us to. Kindle is a big guy.. he should be getting more hype than he is.
Offense:
*McCoy.. He's AMAZING, yes. But I think he's a bit too emotional in his game. What I mean by this is. .when he's frustrated, he does terrible. Walking in to the 3rd quarter, he missed a pass.. then again, then again, then a late hit, then an interception in the endzone. Once he loses momentum, it doesn't seem that he picks it back up easily.
*Lacking offensive variation, and calling bad offensive plays (though I think that's dominantly b/c we're playing lower schools.. I'll touch on that in a bit).
*We need one more solid receiver. I love having options, and I love having a lot of other receivers that are good and we can give them many breaks, but we need to fill that 3rd spot w/ a REAL potential threat (excluding Irby).
*Chiles didn't look very happy AT ALL about not playing until the 4th (I'll touch this later as well).

Good:
Defense:
*The defensive backs aren't as bad as I was expecting. Ya, they need to help w/ coverage better, but inexperience is the FASTEST downfall you can work on, and after a few games, I'm sure they'll be MUCH better.
*D-line is GREAT at giving pressure, even w/o having Lamar Houston. At least.. pass-rush pressure..
*Muschamp is exciting and fiery. He's pretty damn good at shifting momentum that may be turned against our D.
Offense:
*McCoy has what it takes to be great again this year.
*Whittaker is a BA, and as I promised, will get a starting position by the end of this year. For an inexperienced back, I'm seeing GREAT things by him.
*Plenty of depth for our rushers/receivers.
*Shipley is showing that he still has AMAZING burst and will be our deep threat, while Cosby is showing that he can run w/ the best for getting open in the flats. He also seems to still have some return-skills in his hat.
*Our O-line handled their intense blitzing quite well. Ya, McCoy got rushed QUITE a bit, but what do you expect when you have 6+ blitzers.
*Blaine Irby = amazing. Reminds me of Witten.

BAD OVERALL:
*We still play w/ absolutely no heart against teams we expect to whoop up on. We walk into games that we're expected to KILL expecting an easy win, adn it leads to letting them score on their first 2 drives before we could get look even partially opposing..
*Lack of concentration. When the other team had a streak going on, it took some time for us to grab a momentum shift.

GOOD OVERALL:
*We're not giving away our offensive schemes! I hear a lot of people complaining that we're not using the Q-package and Chiles isn't getting playing time. WE'RE PLAYING TEAMS THAT WE SHOULD EASILLY WIN W/O USING THEM! I'd rather save a surprise for a better team, like OU, Mizzou, or TTech. Why show them an offense that they can easilly prepare for, ESPECIALLY if a team finds a flaw with it, that they could potentially abuse?
*People are starting to rise up and make names of themselves. Gideon, Thomas, Irby, Johnson, Williams.. I'm loving it. Well Earl Thomas is having problems, but if he can work those out, he should be good.

To be honest, I can see it being an undefeated season. I won't say it WILL, but it CAN be. OU will bt e tough one, but that's always a game not denoted by the better team, but the team who is better THAT day. Mizzou will be a test, but I'm not TOO worried about it. TTech will be probably about as tough as Mizzou. I'd say TTech would probably be easier, just b/c we all see tha tthey don't have as strong as a defense as what they're making out, and even their passing game is a bit overrated. CU is the game that concerns me most. They are a decent team that's great at home, and our longhorns would expect an easy win from them. I can easily expect an upset there. A&M doesn't phase me. We won't take them easily as we have before, and we're playing on OUR turf this year.

And I'm sorry for grammar or spelling problems.. I was actually rushed during half of this message.

Thomas is going to get a lot of balls thrown his way but the good news is the toughest game we play before OU appears to be Rice. I was hoping CU was much improved but that doesn't appear to be the case.

I thought Chiles acted like an ***. I have NO idea what the plans for are or what he thought would happen going into the game. I wondered why he wasn't playing at earlier in the game. But late in the game a QB counter was called for him and it looked as if he only ran to avoid getting hit and not to try and make a play. If you think you should play more than prove your coaches wrong when you get the chance. I can't stand athletes today who act like that.

I coach and I'm sure I have played someone when it would have been better to play another player instead. Rather than pout, when you get a chance prove me (your coahc) wrong. It looked as if Chiles got the snap, faked to the back and thought to himself, "whatever" and then started jogging and looked no more explosive than I would look. That made he want to see Harris and be done with Chiles.

Maybe Mack Brown and Greg Davis should just say, "We don't think you are QB material" and be done with it. Tell him to play RB, WR or get the hell out of here. With the youth and thiness in the secondary let him play DB and return kicks. If he was that great of a QB he would have played it more than 1 year in high school.

The problem with telling Chiles he's not a QB is that we don't have a second QB on campus we can depend on. I guess he is good enough to beat out Harris which really scares me. Now after this year if he still hasn't improved then I would agree especially with our new stud QB coming in.

If you have watched the last two spring games you would realize that Harris is far more polished than Chiles. I hate to say it, but this is typical Mack. Chiles has amazing talent, it is just not at QB... but we will hold on to the dream that we can change him into a freakish Vince-like QB. It ain't gonna happen. Harris should be the backup and Chiles needs to be redshirted next year and moved to DB or told to hit the road.

This is BS...

As much as I hate to say it, if John Chiles wants to be a QB he needs to transfer. He is not going to get a fair shot at QB with the talent in front of him and the talent coming in behind him.

Of course I dont want him to, but it would be best for him at this point. He just hasnt showed enough to knock off Colt, and I doubt he will get the nod over GG. Look at Snead, he is getting some attention now that he is QB1 at a program.

I dont know, but I would be frustrated too if I was him. He would be starting at 95% of the schools in this country, and instead he is here at Texas pulling splinters out his ***.

What is this amazing talant i hear about Chiles?? I know he hasn't had a full chance but what i have seen of him i have seen nothing to put the words " amazing talant behind this mans name at this time...

Jesus does every thread have to turn into a John Chiles thread?

To the OP - great post. You seemed like you just went with what your gut was telling you about a lot of things - we need more of that around here.

Eric,

I think Chiles is getting a fair chance but the problem is that he is trying to become a QB at a top 10 football university after having only played one year of QB in high school. A lot of these QBs have fathers who are coaches or played QB at a high level. Chiles has a lot of ground to make up in a very short time.

Ultimately the question is how is he going to make a living with his football talent and how does he best prepare himself for the intense competition to win a spot on an NFL roster.

Chiles is a talented athlete but he just has an uphill struggle to be good enough to play div 1 QB. I don't think he could start at QB for any other Big 12 school currently (not even close).

I hope those closest to him are giving him good advice. For most of us, college is training for getting a good job. Chiles is probably making it much tougher for him to get a job in the NFL by not switching as soon as possible to a position that he can play in the NFL.

This is not to say that he can't be a big time QB but it does not seem probable and this is a situation where you have to take a probability based approach.

I agree he should be playing another position, but to think he wouldnt be starting for a huge chunk of the 120 or so D1 teams is silly...

You guys are thinking about top flight teams, if he would have gone almost anywhere else he is QB1 from day 1.

Truck's Son is right... you guys are getting a little bit overboard with this Chiles nonsense. This topic is about what to expect of our team, and our team CERTAINLY doesn't revolve around him. And thanks for the consideration Truck

In that sense though, the talk around the 40 acres is that Chiles is certainly a good QB in practice. He's every bit of runner as we're expecting of him, and his passing is still improving. Harris' arm is about as perfected as Chiles' is, however, supposedly Chiles currently has a better handle on the offense than Harris does atm.

I've heard Chiles has a bit of an attitude that gets at him though. After watching him get frustrated for lack of playing time w/ UTEP, and his lack of passion to play, I'm worried about him. I feel he doesn't want to make the team better, rather, only wants to make himself look better, and his temper got to him in the game to the degree that he didn't even care. As mentioned above, he didn't try to make plays at all. He walked in, handed the next few balls off, and when it was his turn to shine, he just didn't give a damn b/c he was probably put in to keep McCoy from being injured. Let's get serious people, there's already been 3 late hit calls on McCoy, and a few other late hits that weren't called, and the D was starting to get a bit pissy w/ McCoy at the end of the 3rd. I feel Chiles felt like just a backup to close the game, and because of that, he assumes "why bother trying?". As I mentioned before, this is EASILY in his realm, as he has a tough attitude problem.

But anyways, THAT'S my $.02, but really, I don't think we should really even talk about it anymore. Realistically, I don't think we have the room to talk about it anymore. We've already been promised that Chiles would be implemented, and its' already been confiremd by McCoy and a few others that we're not using the package until need-be. We know that Chiles has the talent to run the ball, and that he WILL be used. We can't say it's inneficient yet though, as there's been no purpose of implementing Chiles besides merely keeping McCoy from getting injured, and giving Chiles a quarter of play-time to get more experience.

What I'm starting to get worried about is that we're going to treat Rice like cupcakes. From what I hear, they have quite the Cinderella team this year.. Anyone want to send an anonymous letter to Mack Brown and the football team saying that you're Rice and that you're going to put 3 hats on every receiver for trying to catch one of McCoy's dinky passes? That may be what we're going to need if we treat them lightly.

How many of you guys pumping Harris know what his record as a starting QB in HS was? Do you know what Arlington Bowie's record has been afterwards?

Rushing Yardage
Texas-El Paso
Att Yards..... Average ... TD
Terrell Jackson ....17.. 94 ...........5.5 ... 0
James Thomas II ..4... 34 ...........8.5 ... 0
Daniel Palmer .......2... 14 ...........7.0 ... 0

We are in for a long season if the D can't stop the rush!

Giving up 11.5 points per game to FAU and UTEP is cause for concern. Zero U, Missouri, Kansas, and Tech are all a bit better on offense than FAU and UTEP. The defense needs to shape up quickly before we get to October.

All Chiles needs to do is look at Vince who is struggling. Is Chiles better than Vince? No. So it is time to move to a new position if he wants to make a living in the big league..

Ok, so I've heard from a LOT of you that all that matters on defense is stopping them from scoring. While it's the most important aspect in the game, it's EASILY no the only thing that's important. IF they can get to the red-zone every drive, that's NOT looking good for our defense AT ALL. I don't care if we can stop the ball or force a turn-over a lot when we're in the endzone. The problem is that MOST goal-line stands or turnovers in the endzone is LARGELY luck and GREAT play calling and heart. We can't expect a mixture of all of those everytime they're in the red-zone.. period. All it takes if they're in the red-zone is a big play.. which is QUITE common for such a young team.

Overall, I don't think holding them to 11.5 points is much to even brag about (normally). What I find impressive is these teams got in our red-zone QUITE a bit, yet walked away w/ turnovers, shut-downs, or field goals. As mentioned, if you're in an end-zone, one big play is a TD. With EXTREMELY inexperienced DBs protecting the end-zone from passes, you'd expect the percentage to score is QUITE high. They're just not used to those pressure situations at all. However, they prevail.

Think.. these kids are used to the stadium lights of their HS field.. They're used to a few hundred-thousand fans cheering for them. They jump from THAT pressure to the SUN BOWL and the new and improved DKR! They had 98K+ eyes looking down upon them that game, and eyes all across the country from afar watching them. Think about the transition of a HS stadium, to STARTING on a program as deep as Texas and playing in front of a VERY demanding audience!! You'd expect them to make a lot of major mistakes! That's INCOMPERABLE transition for these kids! They jumped from a list of HIGH SCHOOLS that are maybe top 100-1000 in the nation, to POSSIBLY the best football team in the nation below professionals that they watched as kids and dreamed to be.. Give them props damnit!

On that note, its' great they're getting these small schools out of the way, b/c way for them to improve is experience. We all know they have the talent and the intellect. Now they just need to work on what comes second-nature to them.. that being reading plays.

And really you guys.. enogh w/ Chiles. We can't even try evaluating him yet until we see the Q-package unravel. Besides, we've seen that Colt can run...

What I got from the game is this team is just what most people thought they would be. A work in progress. Especially on the defensive side. The good thing is the defense has tons more potential athletically than the offense. The bad thing is it will require a lot of hard work (and hopefully not too much time). If the defense comes around quickly this team has a chance to be very good, but if not we might lose two or three games very soon (and maybe more later). I know OU is going to give our offense problems, but if our defense cannot slow down their scoring we will get beat very badly. It is way too soon to know if we will win 10 or only 7 games. We will know how good or bad we are after the Missouri game. Even Rice will be a tough test for our pass defense this year. Ark. even passes a lot now, which teamed with their distaste for UT makes this a scary game (even though Arkansas is set for a crappy year.
