for more than a year. I really like what he brings to this team but I have a feeling that he will have a couple of offers after this year to be a HC somewhere. What's everyone's opinion on keeping him for another year?
With all of the young talent on the team..and next year's recruits to look forward to, I'm guessing we can keep him here for another year. Of course it might cost us seven figures.
If Muschamp gets a great Division I job in a BCS auto-bid conference, it will be pretty easy to hire the second best DC in America. Whoever he is. I'm not worried.
As far as Major goes, I'd like to see him take over as OC whenever the staff wants to make that transition, then get a great HC gig somewhere, do well, and come back when Mack feels like retiring (with a whole lot more jewelry).
If we can make it out of this season with two or fewer losses and the defense puts up some sick numbers, then he's gone. However, with the difficulty of our upcoming schedule and the youth of the secondary, those things may well not happen. In which case, I'm thinking he stays on another season or two while his defense seasons to a salty, veteran D. After that, then gone for sure.
BMF might just like it here for a while. If he produces like we think he can, he knows he will be on everyone's short list, and might just wait it out a couple years for the gig he really wants (fertile recruiting base, good facilities, strong fan support, etc). The money will be there, and he's not hurting financially now.
Depends on two things.... (1). what positions open up, and (2). does he realistically believe UT can win a national championship next year.
I don't believe he will make the mistake Chizik and Robinson made and go to a bottom feeder school. If a Tennessee opens up, or a school of that ilk and they are interested, he would have to listen.
But... if he did return to the 40 Acres for one more year thinking Texas has a very legit shot to win the MNC, his stock will continue to rise which would result in much more interest, more dollars and better opportunity.
Coach Boom and the Dick Rattlers defense are looking more impressive.
I would guess you will know before Bowl Season begins. He is still pretty young but his resume is impressive enough I am sure he will get some offers.
A lot of the big schools generally won't hire someone with no head coaching experience as a head coach. I believe he is one of those guys that more schools than normal will consider breaking that rule.
I have been surprised that he didn't stay in the NFL longer or hasn't reunited with either Nick Saban or Jimbo Fisher. He hasn't stayed anywhere very long so I would guess he will keep moving until he takes a Head Coaching position somewhere and settles in.
There is a good chance that both the Clemson and Tennessee jobs will be open at season's end. If offered, I doubt Muschamp would pass up the opportunity. Other than those programs, I can't see any other ideal openings that would be available this year.
I believe Will stays one more year but then he's out looking. Clemson and Tenn are both failry lucrative that might pull him away but they might not want him. We'll have to wait and see on that.
Major will in due time (maybe, hopefully, a short time) will be OC and HC as Mack and gdGD leave and Mack takes over Deloss or comes into a poistion parallel to him.
Well, I hope we never lose Coach Boom for any reason. I hope the athletic dept realizes that the next 20-30 years of college football could easily be dominated by Coach Boom, wherever he coaches.
What I like about him is the attitude he establishes for the whole program. Both sides of the ball.
There is only one solution, and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out. Dodds and Brown have to make the smart decision and insure TEXAS dominates the game for a long time to come.
I'll put it this way then. If he is not coaching this team, then the Longhorn offense is going to have to beat him to ever win a national championship.
If Clemson or Tenn offered, he'd have to go, but I don't think they will. There's a Clemson grad leading the SEC East right now and a former Tenn OC that's got a team that sucks as a matter of law playing decent football in the ACC right now. Throw a newly available Lane Kiffin in the mix - on the side of the ball on which Tenn will likely focus - and I don't think he'll be a finalist at Tenn. Plus, he still hasn't faced OU, MU, and KU, which could cause Texas to take some hits in the standings.
It's premature to think Tennessee will seek Muschamp. It's also absurd to think that UT is going to promise anybody the HC job in advance. That's not the way the University works nor should it.
Some of the same things were said about Chizik after 2005, anybody want to honor that promise now?
I do think we should do everything we can to keep Muschamp including paying him a ton. I also suspect that there is some sort of understanding that he will be here more than a single year unless he gets an offer he can't refuse.
Lastly, we are projected as contenders for the national taco next year. If a Tennessee doesn't come calling this year, someone of the same sort might after an NC run.
Of course, at number five, we're in the national hunt this year. We'll know more when we see what color the Cotton Bowl is two minutes after the game in two weeks.
Isn't it more important to convince our head coach that a more hardass approach to coaching is necessary on the 40 Acres and that this means (1) girnding your players in conditioning and practice: (2) informing upperclassmen that starting slots are not based on seniority or loyalty alone, but performance; (3) holding those on the field accountable for shortcomings; and (4) putting the best talent on the field regardless of class.
We had something like this for a year with Robinson and Tomey and it laid the foundation for the NC. Three years after they left, the foundation was eroded.
Why does it take the periodic appearance of a coach who "get it" when it comes to hardnosed defense to raise the Texas defense to the level which should be the standard, not an anomaly.
He brings a lot of energy to the team that is for sure. However, until he produces an end of season top 5 or even top 10 defense at Texas, he has not warranted any talk of extensions or pay increases. He is good and has a proven track record. However, I don't think he has ever faced Oklahoma or Texas Tech as Def. Cord.
This ain't the SEC, things are tougher in the Big12
Wherever he goes for a head coaching job I am sure if we offer him the job when Mack retires he would come back. There is not a better place to coach than Texas.
