Whaley doesn't plow any defenders because he doesn't need to. He has vision, which enables him to run to places where defenders cannot tackle him. I like the way he explodes through the hole, most importantly, I like his speed. he is still developing. This kid is going to be great, IMO.
The other thing that is misunderstood about leverage is how it's used on a football field. Long limbs make it tougher to lift a weight in the weight room, but are a real advantage on the football field. That's why Charles Haley, never a terror in the weight room, was a terror on Sunday afternoons. I realize most great running backs are short, but I think that is more because height offers no particular advantage at that position and there are a 100 guys 5-9 to 6 foot for every 5 who reach 6'3" . At just under 6'2" inches I was the third tallest person in my high school graduation class of nearly 200. Hardly anyone as short as I gets a college football scholarship unless the positions be RB, FB, WR, CB,S, Kicker or punter. Sometimes Nose tackle or linebacker makes it into major college in football, at less than 6'3, but they have to 2 out of 3 on freakisly speed, strength or quickness.
One thing that made Vince so good was his size. He combined that size with good speed and vision. He couldn't be arm tackled and used his instinct to force defenders to try arm tackle him. I see that same quality in Whaley.
Is he AD? probably not but its not out of the question. I think a better comparison is to Benson, Whaley seems to be improved on some of his qualities, size and speed for one.
Lots of people on this board have been clamoring for a big back and one finally rolls around and then people want to move him to linebacker. We can recruit linebackers to play linebacker, believe it or not.
There have been some tall guys that were great running backs like AD, Dickerson, Eddie George, Jim Brown and probably a few that i have not named. I think the biggest problem with tall backs are injury because they have a lot of body to hit. Having said that Whaley is very fast and he started to run over people more often in his jr season and will probably have to do more this season since Madisonville lost most of there offensive line. I am not going to compare him to AD bit i think his stats are a little better than Petersons were in the same district.
