Well I see its no longer Fort Hood..

Ft. Gordon is going the same way in October. The better news is the statue of General Gordon still resides on the Georgia Capital Grounds.

Hood got a lot of Texans killed, including Pat Cleburne
Lots of good info.

Although Cleburne was actually an Arkansas guy originally from Ireland. Cleburne was one of the best of the best generals in that war. Probably the only CSA general who equaled, or even exceeded, the exploits of Forrest in the West. Cleburne's men flew their own flag, the full moon on the blue background.

Most of the leadership of the Army of Tennessee was a real mess. Joe Johnston performed above-average when he was in there, Hardee was ok. But with upper leadership like Bragg, Hood, Polk, Pemberton, even Cheatham-the-drunk, and some others, there was just no way the Rebels could win in the West.

Some of the Union's top leaders cut their teeth in the West, before getting called back East to take on the Rebels' A-team.

I've been irritated since they changed the name from Hood, but I finally did some research on Gen Cavazos. It seemed like he was a really good General and more importantly leader. I wish they would have just changed the name because of his accomplishments and completely left out the part about the his race and Hoods confederate allegiance. Because of the timing and real reasons behind it I'll never support the change as long as I live because I don't support the woke culture.

Very true, and it's sad. Cavazos was an excellent general who served his country well. Not unreasonable to name a base after him. But when they name a base after him for politically correct reasons, they cheapen his service by reducing him to his Hispanic ethnicity.

Hood wasn't bad because he was Confederate. His problem was that he was a reckless idiot. They shouldn't have ever named a military base after him. I know nothing about Cavazos, but they could name something after him without appealing to racism or the Confederacy.

With Hood and Bragg it's like they took the worst generals the Confederacy had and named bases after them.

Was is the Army wasn't particularly fond of Confederates but was willing to name bases after Confederates to build Southern support so the Army picked the names of crappy leaders over competent ones?
