Weimeraner vs. Viszla

After spending two days with a vizsla puppy... I'm exhausted.

That little thing took it out of me... and my wife... and even my one year old German Shepherd.

I cannot fathom keeping up with her from 2 months old to 2 years old, every day... Holy hell.

i see lots of vizslas and weims everyday and to me they're pretty much the same: loving, loyal, and ridiculously nuts! I've also seen some very intelligent weimeraners. just depends on their training levels and how they were raised, like all dogs pretty much.

our weim, from north texas weimaraner rescue, is the biggest couch potato in the house. he acts like a great dane. odd for sure, but nice.

there are other dogs with the silver or blue coloring if you don't want the hyperness of the weim or vizsla, such as the cane corso and the silver lab. i prefer the corso, but some people don't want a dog that size or don't like the mastiff features.

My weimeraner was the smartes t dog I'd ever know

You could say -'go get your soccer ball' and he would - you could then say 'go get your tennis ball' and he would.

He figured out how to open the fridge so he could help himself etc etc.

Animal intelligence is an interesting subject, and there have been some articles and TV shows about it, as well as books written.
I saw a recent top 10 ranking of dog intelligence, forget where, but you could google it. Labs were in there, and I think Australian Shepherd or one of those herding dogs was number one. The ranking was based on ability to learn voice commands in the least amount of repetitions.
There are starting to be a lot of studies about intelligence in birds, dolphins, dogs, and other animals that find they are much more intelligent than we once believed. Their intelligence is different than ours, to be sure, but they are capable of much more than once thought. Fascinating subject to me.

there's a border collie that they have tested that can use deductive reasoning. he knows around 100 different toys by name and can bring the one you ask for. but if you introduce a new toy into the group and ask for it, he won't recognize the name but will associate all of the other toys with names and deduce that the one you are asking for is the only one he does not know the name for, and bring it. that's pretty smart.

I am late to this deabte, but have owned Viszla's in the past.

Get the right one, and it might be the best friend you ever had.

They are very smart, intuitive and sensitive. For example, they listen to you when you talk. They can also get their feelings hurt easily, and act somewhat childish. I had one that would read highway signs -- he knew his exits.

I had a friend who had a big male while attending Columbia in NY. The dog got agitated on the runs to the grocery store until my bud figured out he just had to be allowed to carry one of the bags. That made him happy. He would put dark glasses on him with a cup of pencils and tip jar with a sign saying "Help a blind dog get through law school." The dog would just sit there and make money.

My family used them for hunting (great combo dog) but the hit rate for a good hunting dog is very low (tendency to be gunshy). However, if you got a good one, that dog was proabably spectacular.

They are good companions, and very good in pairs. They will get on your bed and sofa like they own it (they do have royal blood after all).

However, you MUST work with them when they are young. Its worth it. If you dont have the time, I would go with an easier breed.

One last thing. If I was going to get another, I would consider looking out of state Specifically the midwest. IMO, the breeding circle in TX is too small.

Nothig personal to the Weimaraner owners -- but those dogs can be pretty hard-headed. Many of them are major league barkers. More aggressive than the Viszla.

My Vizsla is 12. I was going to buy a Weimeraner after seeing a puppy, but after doing some research, I found the Vizsla on the opposite page of the AKC guide. Said they were one of the best dogs for kids.

I'm biased, but I'd go with the Vizsla hands down. It is absolutely the most friendly, loyal dog I've been around. I've been around several Weims, and the Vizsla seems way far better socialized (especially with kids).

As everyone has said, they are VERY active. They need a job or else they'll get destructive (both breeds are this way). Thankfully I didn't have kids when I got mine, and I ran him a lot his first 4 years. Had kids when he was 4 - never have had an incident with the kids - he's totally cool with them.

Vizsla's have a ridiculous amount of personality. They are velcro dogs - they'll follow you everywhere you go in the house, and I mean everywhere. They will not be "outside" dogs. They'll just sit (and scratch) at the door until you let them in. They like to sit on furntiure (couches, chairs, beds), not the floor. Several of the their tendencies are almost human. They reallly, really want to be part of the family and will not be ignored. I'm serious.

I've found Vizslas to be highlly intelligent. Mine has figured out how to open the trash drawer, open doors, etc. They take to training very well, and definitely want to please. They don't drool, and they are very low maintenance in the bathing department.

I'm serious, spend a week with both breeds, and I don't see how your fiance wouldn't rather have a Vizsla. My wife orignally wanted a Weimeraner, but absolutely no way now. Our Vizsla was pretty much my wife's son, and she wasn't a dog person before we got him. Vizsla's are a little smaller and much more nimble - which I found to be a big benefit because he lives in the house (which, as noted above, most live in the house, not in the yard). He's gone on full sprints through the house and is able to avoid furniture, lamps. etc. It's actually pretty damn impressive.

If you're seriously considering a Vizsla, buy the book "Versatile Vizsla". It's a hardback book that's about 250 pages. Amazing amount of info on the breed. Look it up on Amazon. The book is pretty much spot on about everything about the breed.

Feel free to PM if you want to talk about the breed.
