Weimeraner vs. Viszla

I finally have a house with a yard (and a beach) so I'm going to finally get my dog - I have been associated with a weimeraner for 10 years that I dearly love and have always loved Vislas as well - I am leaning towards the Viszla as they are smaller and from reading various sites they are easier to socialize with small kids and other pets.

I have 2 cats that will have to live with the dog and I'm worried about the Weimeraner with them vs the Viszla.

Note: - I'd be happy with either. The fiance prefers the weimeraner because she thinks they are prettier.

she thinks the viszla is 'ugly' which is retarded since they look pretty much the same except for colour.

Damn, I thought this thread was going to be about great tank battles of the Eastern Front.

I cast my vote for getting the Viszla.

I don't know a whole lot about Viszlas other than they tend to have a high energy level.

I own a Weimaraner, on the other hand... Don't think that just because you have a yard the dog will get enough exercise. These dogs are generally very high energy and need a LOT of vigorous exercise daily.
They also tend to be very neurotic, sometimes manifested by separation anxiety. Many can't handle being left alone AT ALL, and most don't do well left alone more than a few hours a day.
And, they tend to have a high prey drive and will want to kill anything small and furry. Sometimes this extends to small dogs, but not always.

I adopted mine from Weimaraner Rescue of North Texas when she was 5. I think I might have contemplated suicide if I had gotten her as a puppy. Seriously, don't underestimate the amount of work and exercise Weimers will need.

either will require a commitment to daily exercise and training.

If you aren't up for the 3+ miles a day walk I would recommend something lower energy.

those are definitely two high energy dogs.
if your servant can walk (wear it out) it might be OK, otherwise I hope you have a lot of free time/energy.

you might check out a rhodesian ridgeback. mine gets along fine with two cats and is a big lazy dog when we are not around and is capable of keeping up with you when you go out

I've had friends with both Viszlas and Weimers (lived with a Weimer too)

definitely Viszla

They take to training better and are sweathearts around kids. MUST be trained though.

Weimers are more unpredictable and generally not as intelligent. I've seen the anxiety described above in Weimers and it's not pretty. At all.

go with the Viszla, my dad has one and it's a sweet, loyal dog. Not to offend any weimer owners, but they're not as intelligent, not even close. and the ones I've seen aren't very good with cats, they actually kill them from time to time if not raised properly.

Our good friend recently picked up a Viszla puppy. Very cute, friendly dog. VERY energetic, much much more so than our German Shepherd was at that age. Coincidentally, we're puppy sitting for a couple days as well so we'll see how that goes...

No real experience with Weim's other than stories from other people...

My only experience with a Weimaraner was my cousin's dog, Sir Lancelot. When we would take our dachshund Moose over there, Moose would take over Lance's doghouse and wouldn't let him in there.

Not very bright, Sir Lancelot.

as I said earlier, weimers seem to act strange around cats; my mum lives on the coast and her neighbor has a couple of weimers, they are very hyper/friendly dogs in general but they bark at anything/too much and seem to like drowning/killing cats.

fwiw, my brother has a 13 year old weimer that was fine around their cat. the dog of course had to have more attention than the cat.

didn't realize that about asians and big dogs, might explain my neighbors parents who are visiting

good luck with whichever you choose

I think the key to a successful weim/cat relationship is to introduce them when they're young. I have a 6 year weim and a 6 year old cat. They were brought into the house around the same time, and they've been best friends ever since. They play, eat, and sleep together with no problems. I absolutely love my weim. Just make sure you train them when they're young.

I'm also intriqued by the Viszla, and have considered adding one to the house, but I just don't really want 2 large dogs in the house. I've heard they're great dogs though.

do they have Viszla breeders in HK? Or will you have to get it drop shipped? A good Viszla will run you at least a G I'm thinking.

Get one of each.

Also, people saying one breed or another is smart or dumb are being ridiculous. Dogs are smart or dumb within breeds. Within litters, there are smarter and dumber dogs. And intelligence is not the same thing as being really calm and willing to please humans.

Funny little coincidence....

A purebred Vizsla popped up at the humane society today. Someone will get a hell of a deal (financially anyway).

It's ViZsla.
I had one that lived to be sixteen years old.
Best dog I ever had.
He was a great hunter and family pet and they DEFINITELY need lots of exercise and attention.

One of my housemates back in undergrad college days had a weimeraner. This is just one dog, and may not be representative, but it was dumber than a box of rocks, truly untrainable.

Bought from Australia.
