Week 3 of College Football

Interesting Saturday of games, and Ohio State takes ANOTHER beating on a national stage.

Hot list:

USC - Yeah, it seems obvious, but gotta start with them. Really, they are in a class by themselves. Gave up a field goal at the beginning of the game, but after that, NOTHING. Sanchez, 17/28 with 4 TDs. Running game, 5 yards per carry, led by Joe McKnight. 3 turnovers against an (especially w/o Beanie) average Ohio State offense. Ohio State never had a CHANCE. Honestly, I see USC walking to Miami - no one beats them regular season.

BYU - How bout these guys, huh? This definitely has the makings of a team that can go undefeated and get to the BCS. 59-0, against a team which beat Tennessee early in the OOC. Max Hall, SEVEN touchdowns. SEVEN.

East Carolina - Maybe TWO spoilers from mid-major conferences this year? East Carolina also has the look of a potential BCS buster. Maybe more impressive than taking out VT and West Virginia in B2B weeks was going on the road, where they had to know they were going to hit a rough game, and they sucked it up and pulled it out in the last two minutes after being behind for a lot of the game. Very well done by ECU.

Penn State - The 'heir apparents' to Ohio State in the Big 11?

Maybe. Certainly a more impressive start to last season, when State Penn let a bad ND team hang around for a while and lost to an average Michigan team in the first four games. I don't think there's any doubt that no Anthony Morelli is addition by subtraction for the Lions with the numbers they've put up. Fans, keep this stat in mind also with the Lions: Penn State has now scored 35 points in the first half of the first three games. The last time State did that was in 1994 - and that year Penn State went undefeated.

Oregon - No, it wasn't pretty. But they were down early, in a cross-country trip, and they found a way back due to 300+ yards rushing and a defense that held Purdue without a touchdown after half. I think they're USC's biggest challengers.

Oklahoma - This team, like USC, is on a different level, fans. 18 of 21, 5 TDs by Bradford and two 100 yard rushers. And up 34-0 at half. They made sure this time that the Pac-10 officials couldn't screw them over. My uncle - a former high school football coach - told me last night that Bradford already looks like a professional QB and I agree with him. He is that good. I will, however, be interested to see how the OU offense handles that funky 3-3-5 of TCU's in a couple weeks.

Missouri - Now you see what this offense is capable of with a RUNNING game (and Mizzou has rushed for 226, 256 and 132 in the first 3 games). Daniel, 23 of 28, 405, 4 TDs. Jeremy Maclin, 6 catches, 172, 2 TDs. I'll be shocked if they don't score at least 28 in every game this year.

UNLV - All of a sudden, with this big upset of ASU, UNLV looks to actually be relevant in football this year. A bad ISU team comes to town next, so if UNLV can handle them and get to 3-1, they may actually get to the postseason this year.

Texas Tech - As much crap as I've given them for the amount of yards and points they've given up thus far, it's only fair I give them credit for last night. Held the June Jones offense to less than 300 yards, while racking up yards and points of their own. Much better effort by Tech this week.

And then - there's the not list:

Ohio State - In the words of Carl Lewis, "Uh Oh!"

That's what EVERY Buckeye fan should be saying this morning. Because this team was not ready and is not ready for an opponent like that. To put this in perspective - the Buckeyes got beat worse last night than Nebraska did in EITHER of the two games we had vs. SC - and both of those games were nightmares. No Beanie + Boeckman at QB + USC defense = long day at the Coliseum.

Can they regroup? For their sakes they better.

Illinois - Only 20-17? Against ULALA?

Come on, guys. You HAVE to do better than that. It's 3 games in. You are who you are at this point, and what you are is an average Big 11 team.

Georgia - OVER-RATED! (clap, clap, clap clap clap)

OVER-RATED! (clap, clap, clap clap clap)

Yep, I said it. Overrated. I laughed my *** off watching that game yesterday as an average to poor SEC team led the supposed #2 team in America AT THE HALF. Only 14-7? Against that team?

Not impressed. UGA is NOT the #2 team in America.

The Auburn/Miss. State game - 3 - 2? A final score?

Did these guys remove their football pads and put on baseball gear?

The Big 10 Conference - I would put the Pac-10 in this conversation as well, but at least the Pac went undefeated in their matchups with the Big 10! I'll give Penn State and Wisconsin credit - those are good teams. But other than that let's take a quick rundown, shall we?

Northwestern TRAILED Southern Illinois in the first half, but won.

Minnesota allows 23 to Montana State, but wins.

Illinois? Mentioned above. You have to do better than that.

Michigan State, 17-0? Against FAU? Less than unimpressed.

Iowa, only 17-5 against a bad ISU team? Come on, give me a break.

Purdue lets a 20-6 halftime lead slip away and loses in double OT at home.

Michigan gets clocked by a BAD Notre Dame team. Michigan will be lucky to make a bowl this year.

And Ohio State gets a beatdown on a national stage, again. Not a good day for the Big 10.

Washington State - It's bad enough when you start 0-3 and lose 45-17 to Baylor. But it's even worse when you consider Wazzou has been outscored 150-33 in their first 3.

Arizona State - With Georgia on the way next week, you CANNOT lose that game, guys. Just CANNOT lose it - especially with a second half lead.

Arizona - And they're not the only school in Arizona that gets criticized this week. U of A and Lil' Stoops had it all there to get back to the postseason. Win at Albuquerque, go to 3-0 in OOC, beat the two Washington schools, Oregon State and Stanford and go 7-5. But they GAG on their bone in ABQ, and now they probably have to win all four of those games.

Within the Big 12:

Hot:

Baylor - Break up the Bears! Yeah, break em up! Over TEN yards a carry in their game the other night. Yes, TEN yards per carry. They'll still be hard-pressed to find two more wins on their sked, but for now, break up the Bears!

Nebraska - Yes, I realize it is ONLY New Mexico State. But what I'm happy about is that we can FINALLY run it 40+ times and pound someone into the ground - over 300 yards rushing on the day for Nebraska, and I'm happy that Joe Ganz doesn't have to throw it 30 times for us to win the game. Much, MUCH better effort and it's an uptick going into the bye week. Would have been a shutout too except for a fumble when the second team got in there, and that's how NMSU got a cheap TD. Still, pleased with the effort. But, in the words of your legend Darrell Royal,

"All the white meat's gone. There's nothin but necks left on the platter."

Not:

Oklahoma State - Yes, they have a dynamite offense. But who the hell schedules MISSOURI STATE in FOOTBALL?

Then again, I shouldn't be talking, as we've schedule Maine, Directional Illinois, and Nicholls State all within the last five seasons. That's embarassing - thanks a lot Pederson.

National top 5:

1. USC - In a league of their own.
2. OU - Sam Bradford is - amazing.
3. Florida - Two weeks to get ready for an average Tennessee - Florida should have the advantage in that rivalry this year.
4. Mizzou - 52, 59 and 69 points for MU in the first 3. What's next, 70+?
5. LSU - BIG road test at Auburn next week. Road team has not won in this series since 1999.

Big 12 top 5:

1. OU
2. MU
3. UT - With the hurricane postponing UT-Arkansas till the 27th, UT's schedule becomes that much harder. UT now gets to face Arkansas, @ CU, and OU in Dallas all in a row. Two rivalry games in three weeks.
4. Texas Tech
5A. Kansas - Grothe went wild against them the other night. They're going to miss Talib bigtime.
5B. Oklahoma State - Could well be undefeated heading to Columbia.

That's it for this week, guys.

Good write up again....

I'm with you on Georgia. I've been watching Stafford since he got to UGA and I just don't see what others do. Sure, he's physically impressive but he's not nearly as smooth as say, Bradford. He overthrows people a lot and has a habit of throwing INT's. Yesterday he was 15-25 for 146 yards and South Carolina's defense is average.

Speaking of SEC defenses, I watched that Auburn/Miss. State game. SEC apologists will tell you that was an example of great defense but those were two incredibly sloppy offenses. Somehow Auburn keeps getting ranked in the Top 10 every year despite very average offenses. This offense is worse than most for them.

How does Ty Willingham keep getting jobs? He's on #3 at this point and at each stop, his teams get totally destroyed when they play top level teams. I don't expect UW to beat OU but they weren't competetive at all. It reminded me of Willingham's Notre Dame teams. Whenever they played a top team, they got obliterated.

The two best teams so far in my opinion are OU and USC. Something tells me Ohio State will be 11-1 at the end of the season and the Big 10 apologists will tell us that the USC horse ******* was a long time ago and Ohio State didn't have Wells. If you watched the game, it was obvious that these teams were on two totally different levels.

I agree about OU's opponents. They'll play Texas, Kansas, and Tech but those are the best teams they'll play except maybe Missouri.

USC has a history of getting tripped up in conference, though. However, the Pac-10 looks awful.

To me, Stafford is the perfrect proto-type quarterback. Perfect height, Perfect body size. Smart. And a 54.7 % passing percentage in 2007 (94th nationally). But he just doesn't make it work. He is like the antithesis of Doug Flutie.

Good stuff.

I guess I'm one of those who are hanging on to the "SEC is the best" schtick (barely) but with the exception of Florida, who seems to understand that "offense" is not "opportunistic defense", SEC games are the shite boring. Especially teams like GA, Auburn, even LSU to an extent... big boys who can't truck it up pointwise. Give me the "inferior" Big 12 with its exciting offenses any day.

As for OU, maybe agreed, but if it's the traditional OU, they'll look like Jesus, Moses and Elijah until about week 1 in December, whereupon they'll suck beyond suckiness. OU has looked "in a separate class" more or less for years, until the big CrapInTheirPants awaitng them some time between Dec. 1 and Jan. 8. I don't see why it won't happen this year.

What's with Joe Pa? Penn State actually looks worthy of their record for once? Maybe he's ready to put the Silver Stake in Bobby Bowden's heart. Either way, both relics will coach until they look like Norman Bates's mother before giving the other guy the all-time record.

Big 10 sucks. Whew, got rid of that one once and for all with this deep and penetrating analysis.

Mizz... waitin' for the Pinkel Crash and Burn in Austin. Watch for it...

Big 12 -
Baylor only REALLY sucks now. Not REALLY REALLY sucks as usual. Congrats Art Briles, you're now in competition as the "Best Div. III school in I-A (BCS) NCAA ball. Well, until Sept. 20 at least.

OSU - fuggeddabouddit. Always an underachiever (can you say "angry, incompetent coach?"). The only Pickens Wind Power I'm buying is the one which says they'll be a contender "this year". Look for 6-5 and an invite to the "Geese Crashing on the Blue Field" Bowl or the like. Way too much talent, way too little results. Again.

Can't disagree w/your Big 12 Top 5, for now. Give it 3 weeks then it's OU, UT, Tech, Kansas, MU. Tech MIGHT be better than UT but I gotta go with "they'll stay there till someone knocks them out."

As for UT - I see 2 losses (OU, KU), the only other possible one CU in Boulder. But not MU or Tech. Tech seems to get too wound up and screw themselves in "just misses" with UT.

aggy - who gives a ****? Too bad that nice big stadium is only a graveyard for miniature collies. Seems such a waste of space...

Nebraska just signed a 2-year deal to play Miami, so I guess it's not all cupcake city. Plus they just got done with a series with USC. Meanwhile, Mack's whining about having to play colorado without a bye week to prepare because life's so unfair that Arkansas got moved back two weeks.

True. I suspect that our OOC scheduling will be better as long as Tom is in the AD office.

exactly. and before anyone says HYNAAR HYNAAR 2004, beating a team by 36 doesn't mean you are 36 points better. When you turn the ball over 4 times in 15 minutes, that kind of fucks up your point differential. Just the same as OU-UT 2003, I don't think OU is 50 points better than Texas that year. That day, yep. That year, no.

I love the Sooner excuses for that game. Yes, if only your dumb KR had not muffed the punt 4 minutes into the game, you would have won the game.

You got absolutely embarrassed in that game and your players gave up in the second half.

I would say USC WAS 36 points better than you that year.

Well OU was playing at or above USC's level until that happened, and it was a very uncharacteristic mistake by a heady senior. I never said we would have won the game.

So you think, if 2004 USC and 2004 OU played 100 times, 55-19 would be a median result, not an outlier? That is just giant LOL.

Absolutely OU did quit in the second half, which was embarassing. Leinart played a fantastic game, and OU had trouble stopping USC. USC was having the same trouble until OU self-destructed, then quit.

Sometimes a team is clearly out-talented or outclassed (OU-A&M 03, OU is up 70-0 mid 3rd quarter and A&M hasn't committed a single turnover), and sometimes, a few penalties and mistakes turn into an avalanche against a very good team (OU-UT 03). It's my opinion that OU-SC 04 is the latter type of game. It's not like OU backed into the title game. They gave up 6 total points their last 3 games. They annihilated everyone they played that year, save an excellent Texas team, who got shut out, and two road games in conference at ranked teams.

Well, and USC.

OU played some good ball earlier that year and it got them to the Championship Game. I was at that game and USC was definitely 36 points better. It looked like a thousand and it felt like a million.

The years OU blew out Texas by 50+ I feel the same way. I disagree with the "what if they played again" argument. Game is only played once and they keep score for a reason. OU was 50+ points better in those games. Saying anything different short changes those players that played that day.

I have seen a lot of routs over the years and once they get started they are hard to stop. Best to not let them get started at all but if you do you sure as hell won't get it stopped by quitting.

So OU in 04 held a VY-led 11-1 Texas team that averaged nearly 40 points a game in the other 11 games to 240 yards and ZERO points, and held their last 3 opponents to 6 total points, yet you don't think it's AT ALL an anomaly that USC hung 55. Ok dude. Whatever. Some people just don't understand how football works obv. Same way UT beats CU 42-7 and then loses to them the exact same season. Hmm maybe a ******* barrage of turnovers skews the result, eh?

Looking forward to seeing the Horns back in action this week. Hopefully the week of will be a blessing in disguise to keep the sharp for the next 5 weeks.

blow u and USC look like the top teams at this time. The Big 12 looks solid and it will be interesting to see how many losses the Big12 winner will have. Nearly impossible to make it through undefeated.
