VY mentioned suicide to therapist

I love Vince as much as any true Horn can, but this man is obviously going through a tough time, and anyone who says it isn't affecting his game is insane.

I feel for Vince, and hope he can pull through this trying time to become the Vince we all know he is

The therapist going to the football coach seems like a breach of ethics to me also. I think it's safe to assume the therapist is on the team payroll. I wonder what the protocol is for dealing with a potentially suicidal patient. Should you contact the police, the family? But the coach??!?

1.) The player was not able to be located and did not have a phone on him.

2.) Fisher is a football coach, not a psychologist...how on Earth is he equipped to handle this situation?

The last thought on Fisher's mind was that this would become public records, he acted quickly and swiftly when he had to. Unfortunately it was an over-reaction (or so we've been led to believe up to this point), but if he didn't do anything and something bad did happen everyone would be screaming to high heavens about how Vince is just a pawn to the Titans and how they have no care or respect to their players.

Also, I've never heard of anything like this happening...who knows if teams have a protocol for a situation like this. I bet more then a few discuss how to internally handle situations like this, a chain of command, etc...

The problem with the police putting this into the police report (and thus public record) is that now players will be much less likely to come forward with any feelings like this to a team therapist or potentially one in general. I've had those feelings before, but only my wife and then therapist ever knew. At work, HR knew that I would not be at work for a few weeks, but management is not allowed to know. It's at the discretion of the employee. There needs to be a more private way to deal with this type of thing, or players will not seek help and we'll have a real tragedy. Been over 15 years ago and not even an issue today. I had worked like 27 of 28 days (long hours) and finally my body and mind just kind of shut down. The mind can do weird things if you put it under enough stress especially with lack of sleep. We're pretty complicated machines.

I hate journalist there all scum.. This is something that any person with compasion or morals would put on the back burner rather then worrying about what sales.. Just another piece of trash that is the Espn Media..

It was in the police report as I understand it. If ESPN doesn't pick it up, then another paper would have. The problem was that it made the police report as they are public record.

Doctor patient confidentiality ends when the patient mentions suicide. At that point, it is the duty of the doctor/therapist to seek outside help. If that person cannot be reached, it is correct to contact the police. This happens all of the time for people that have nothing to do with the NFL. The police department does not have any responsibility to cover for Vince.

If he was having suicidal thoughts, he was right to mention them to someone in a position to help, and those people were right to make the next step for Vince's well being.

In the grand scheme of things, Vince's health is much more important that his quarterback rating. He has a lot going in his personal life, and that is wearing on him as well. A little break from football may be what is best for him.

ESPN needs to just shut the hell up for a while and treat Vince like a human being. He is a young man who is having trouble balancing a tough job, his personal life, and a young family. I have had a lot of those struggles myself without 60,000 people booing me when I had a bad day at work. They are giving him the Mike Vick treatment, and the only two things that they have in common are their position and the color of their skin. Vince is a good person, and needs a little space and room to grow up. A wide receiver or two would not hurt either.

Any time we or EMS encounters a suicidal patient we are directed to notify P.D. and medical control....but only after we notify their coach, of course.

The big problem for VY, if all this suicide talk is indeed true, is that right now most of all he needs someone he can trust that he can talk to in complete confidentiality. Now a whole community of professionals with a great potential to assist him has most likely been alienated to him in that regard.

Sucks to be VY right in a lot of ways.

EDIT: After finishing reading the thread, I see that I basically pp'd what Wadster said. Glad you're feeling better, man.

A pretty broad stroke of the brush...

My apologies to the few that are decent...

Mandingo, thanks, but as I said it was a long time ago. Had a daughter go through it last year though and it's scary as hell when it's your kid. She's doing great now. These things can work out well with the right help. I hope VY gets what he needs for life.

i am not at all convinced that a doctor/therapist can tell someone other than a likely victim of murder/attack or law enforcement about a patient's statements.

people keep saying it, but I would like to see the applicable case law/statute that applies here. anyone got a cite to it?

"Where does depression hurt? Everywhere. Who does depression hurt? Everyone." Cymbalta can help. Maybe Vince needs some!

And if supposedly he did mention suicide to a therapist, why is this **** getting out to the public? What happened to patient/doctor confidentiality? If I were Vince, I'd be pissed!

If you "mention" suicide to a therapist, it would be HIGHLY unethical for that therapist to notify anyone, especially the patient's employer.

Now, if you say, "I'm going to commit suicide, and here's how I'm going to do it", it would be unethical for the therapist to NOT do something, but I'm not sure contacting an employer is the right thing.

Mentioning suicide, and being suicidal are two VASTLY different things...
