Vs Illini

From a coaching standpoint,
- Got past the whole 'undefeated' talk
- Lost to a quality team, even though that team had about 20 TOs
- Have lots of things to coach on both sides of the ball

This team has lots of talent, especially like the young guys

Timmy had a great game. Carr? I'm hoping it's another teaching opportunity for him. He had these same spurts last year where he couldn't get going shooting, get outplayed by a different guard (whether it was Ramey, Jones, etc.) and still maintain that he should have the ball in his hands in crunch time.

Hunter should be the primary distributor at those points. Carr seems to want to shoot anyhow.

My takeaway — Illinois has a long, athletic, and aggressive defense that everyone struggles against. I don’t know how much of that showed on TV but I had a bird’s eye view of the court and could see the bodies flying around everywhere.

They got the better of us today, but we played well and almost pulled off yet another tough win. While I would’ve preferred a W, there was nothing to be upset about. We have plenty of room to grow, and plenty of time to make it happen.

They are exactly the team that you would think gives Texas the biggest problems both defensively and offensively. Yet, Texas should have won that game.

Illinois has the most physical, aggressive, longest well coached defense we’ve played by far. Carr must have slipped down five or six times trying to thread his way through traffic; and had a rough shooting night. Hunter scored under his average too.
And still in the final seconds we got the ball into our best free throw shooter’s hands where if he makes just one we win.
Losses are always hard. As far as early season losses go, this was nothing to get your panties in a wad about.

Beard did Carr no favors putting him in one on one situations all night. Don’t think I saw him get a screen all second half.

Missed it. Did it seem like we tightened up again, like the Creighton game?

Solid lead, tighten up, let them come back... Two games isn't a trend, but wondering in advance.

No. In my opinion, their defense was excellent for the most part, and they were able to disrupt our offense to the extent that when we did get open looks, our guys missed (perhaps rushed?) enough easy shots to prove to be the difference in the game.

Our defense was also excellent, but when we did break down the Illini hit enough of their open shots to ultimately win it. It was a hell of a good game to watch.

We may be talking past each other, because what I described, you might define as "tightening up". I thought it was more on their quality D rather than our guys just getting the yips, so I wouldn't call it "tightening up".

It was a tough game, and we're supposed to have tough games, otherwise we'll end up like Gonzaga from last season and not get tested until it's too late.

We're staring down a schedule now that doesn't have us being tested again for over a month. That's a LONG vacation from actual work. During that time, they'll constantly replay those scenarios from the Illinois game in practice and figure out what works better.

People who see the number greater than zero in the "L" column need to understand that this isn't football (so we're not out of it) and the XII is a grind (meaning that we're not going to be 30-1 entering the conference tournament).

No, this game was more Texas taking control and then losing it on repeat cycle.

Texas placed itself in position to win this game but made too many mistakes on defense to close it out(along with the missed ft at the end and earlier that would have extended the lead). Texas lead by 5 with 45 seconds left and mistakes in communications and judgment/spacing gave them open threes which they buried (credit to them). Got to take away the three at that point (especially their sniper that dropped several on us earlier) and make them make a defended two. Rice was trying to deny and just lost perspective of where he was I think, but it was a bad foul. When it went to ot I didn’t think it would end well and it didn’t. Learn and get better, I think they will.

As an aside, it sure was slippery in the lane on Texas offensive side late in the game and ot. I also thought the excessive delay while they reviewed the goal tending call benefitted the Illini, and let them catch their breath and focus.

Definitely had some shooters go cold, which is gonna happen, but Beard did them no favors whatsoever. He basically had the offense go one on one entire second half….very little screen help to create space. Their defense was too good for that elementary type offense. That’s what I saw anyway.

Yes^^^ on both counts. Carr had an extremely tough time keeping his footing, which hurt us via him losing control of the ball when he went down. And the review of the goal tending was indeed a god send for them. Very bad break for us, just as when our best free throw shooter missed the first half of a one and one.
Really, Illinois was fortunate to win. If we meet again in the tourney, I'm betting on the Horns.

Thanks. Sounded eerily similar to Creighton where I did think we tightened up on offense (sphincter) during C's comeback.
