Vince Young's Number to be Retired

Off the subject - kind of; now that VY's # 10 will be retired, do any of you think a bronze VY will ever join Earl at DKR?

Man, if we retired swimming caps, The Swim Center would be completely covered. Although honestly, I think a gold medal should get an athlete recognition from the athletic department, as long as you're still in school when you do it (Crocker, others).

I am 100% for all three of the football retiree's and if we are going to retire numbers then they should be done. Since we have previously retired numbers then this is a good move.

Now if you want to argue that no one should have their number retired, I can see your point.

Personally, I like it, it adds tradition IMHO. I like looking at the rafters when the Celtics play and seeing all of the numbers retired, as well as other places.

As long as they also make sure to note all the other great ones that wore #10 like Marty Akins, etc.
I really wish Vince had stayed around for one more year and won the Heisman then it would have been a no-brainer to retire the number.
James Street, Worster, Gilbert, Koy, Bertelsen(sp), I mean where would it stop?
It could get out of hand, that is why the Heisman is so critical a part of the retiring number event in FB.

I was gonna add some females, but it appears it's just for mens sports.

Cat
Christa Williams(the Cat before Cat in my estimation)
Of course Clarissa
Fran Harris
Kamie Etheridge
Demetria Sance
just to start off..

Men
How bout #18 in baseball?
And you gotta figure ole Petey Gardere's gotta be upset. I mean he did beat ou four times.

this was the first topic on Around the Horn's showdown. woody paige thought it was dumb to retire the # of a player that was only there for 1 year. mariotti thought it honored the legacy of durant.

paige got the point

Bobby Layne - Anyone that can score 40 points hungover and pitch a no-hitter drunk needs his number retired.

Nobis - Averaged almost 20 tackles a game for his career. Helped win our first NC and stopped Namath on 4th-and-inches to win the Orange Bowl.

VY = VY

Slater Martin - Led us to first Final Four and is only Longhorn in the HoF

All the baseball ones are good too, but what about Jim Gideon?

I've hated the Heisman Rule for a long time. Basically you're saying "Here national media, decide whose numbers we should retiure." It effectively meant that no position other than QB, RB or WR was ever going to be retired by football. And UT should be ashamed it took this long to retire Slater's number.

Durant - Only here for one year yeah, but first freshman ever to win Naismith.

Damn well time to retire some of those numbers, but take too many of 'em out of play and our athletes will soon have triple digits on the backs of their jerseys.

I for one disagree with retiring a number.. There are so many great athletes who play at the unitversity.. Wasn't my thought but one poster brought up the suggestion of a ring of honor instead like the cowboys. To me this would make for a better way of honoring outstanding play..

Are we going to have any number left?

Let's field a team with 22 guys with, oh, number 47.

Before some smartass quotes that and replies, "Worst. Idea. Ever." let me just say that it might be the worst idea ever, unless you're addicted to methamphetamines (can we get some fark help here?).

Only the best of the very best should have their number retired. Basically player of the year on a national title team or for players that had a tremendous impact.

To judge impact, you need to wait a few years at least. I would even say to normally wait for VY but since it would be a given that he would receive the same accolade in 5 years, it doesn't hurt to retire #10 now.

As far as Durant, this should have been one that waited a couple of years to judge his impact. However, I think this was just as much for Barnes as for KD.

Doesnt anyone care that neither of them actually graduated. i say once you graduate from the university you are eligible for jersey retirement. Not until.

I'm not big on retiring numbers -- but if you're going to.....

I'm not sure how Street (either one) was over-looked????

Absolutely right on CAT Red. Also they should retire Clarissa Davis because without her I don't think we get our only NC in women's basketball.
