This thread brought back great memories of our 2005 season so I'll share my story.
Some time in mid-February, I believe the 18th, I logged onto a website that said "No Matches" and took a long pause. After all the work, the studying, the letters of recommendation, and the interviews - I didn't get into medical school.
So for about a week I floundered in Austin and in Dallas. That was a terrible week. I had a sit-down with the parents and told them I was unsatisfied and I refused to just give up on what I wanted. Although I graduated a few months later with a bachelors from UT, I was not willing to stop just yet. I hadn't felt this ****** in Dallas since we lost to Colorado in 2001 at the CCG, a game I was at.
I remember making a personal promise to myself that no matter how many times I had to apply, I would get into medical school.
So I started from scratch. I worked as a medical assistant [see: clinic *****] at a community clinic in east austin. Think Rudy cutting the grass and running under the bleachers - that kind of "earning your keep" experience.
I had the sense to hit up a friend's ex-girlfriend for her season tickets that August as my first year out of college. That was a golden ticket I was sitting on and had no idea.
I started to realize how much of a golden ticket when I got my package. Away tickets to Ohio State. OU tickets on the 30 only a few rows from the field.
And so I plugged along with my menial job while using tickets with a Chinese girl's name on them, somehow getting in as a white male. That 2005 season was the one thing I looked forward to.
I remember the good times - when Tech swaggered up to DKR with a top-10 rank thinking they were somebody.
I remember the bad times - the long walk back from the shoe being serenaded with "**** TEXAS" and the entire experience at Pyle Field.
I remember the scary times - the first half against Okla. State.
One thing I remember more than any other though, was checking my credit card statement and seeing the most beautiful withdrawl I've ever seen. "$125 UT SPORTS" - I knew immediately what that meant and I ran out of work and called my best friend to tell him. We were going to the Championship.
I put a centerfold of Vince that I now have framed in the window of my crappy West Campus apartment for all of that long December. We finally made it out west, first a new year's detour in Vegas, then to LA only to be told we had no shot at winning. The cashiers kept repeating this fodder as we bought our $5 champagne on the way to the Rose Bowl in hopes of what might be. We could only say in reply "Vince Young" with cult-like devotion.
You guys know the rest of the story. The only reason I can stand living in Houston right now is that it spawned Vince. That, and I go to medical school here.
