UT-Pan American vs. Texas

NBHorn7

Pimp Daddy
From a very snowy northeast Texas where we have about 5 inches of the white stuff on the ground as I type it seems a bit funny to be having a game thread for baseball, but we are. It's already been put off one day by whatever kind of weather in Austin delayed it.

The snowstorm and the sleet storm we had Monday has played havoc with my internet and now there is no video of the game to be had, so this is going to be a challenge. It's even harder because of my sticky fingers from having just had a bowl of snow ice cream, which if you don't know of what I speak you should google it and try it if you get snow. It's good we don't get it that often or I would lose my girlish figure.

But I digress and back to baseball and will post the lineups and try to do this without any video.

Garcia-2B
Loncar-CF
Garcia Jr.-1B

Connor Mayes, the freshman right hander gets the start for Texas tonight.

UT-Pan American enters the game at 5-2 on the season against 7-2 Texas.

Leading off is the second baseman Jesus Garcia or Pan Am.
Mayes toes the rubber and we are ready for baseball.

Garcia bats righty and starts this contest by waving through a fast ball for a K and one gone.

Cole Loncar the center fielder bats second and we suddenly get a musical interlude from the KVET feed for some reason and now they come back to the game. Told you it would be a challenge tonight.

He walks on four pitches for the first runner of the game.

Barrera plays first in this game and bats from the right side with one on and two down.

Texas gets a runner but nothing more. One played and nothing across.

Correy Davis, the right fielder bat right handed with two on.
He bunts toward first and Barrera feilds it and fires to third on a hop that Boswell scoops for a 3-5 force as the sac fails and it's one away.

Runners on first and second for Manny Loredo and he grounds a single by Marlow on the right side and the throw by Shaw comes in and is just late and the run scores.

Pan Am leads 1-0.

Scott Mercer bats with one down and runners on the corners.
Mercer tries for the surprise bunt with two strikes and fouls it off for a recorded strike out for two down.

Isaac Gonzalez bats with two away and still two on as Mayes tries to limit the damage.
The count runs full and that allows the runner at first to go and he does as a walk is issued to load the bases.

The top of the Broncs order is Garcia and he grounds to first and the throw to Mayes covering goes off his glove and another run scores on the error on Mayes.

Pan Am leads 2-0.

Loncar up again and a 2-0 count brings out Skip and Mayes seems rattled by his error and his struggle this inning.
A ground ball on a 3-1 count goes to Hinojosa for a 6U force at second to finally retire the side.

Pan Am gets the first earned run in a long time off the Texas pitching staff and the adds an unearned one also. So the Broncs lead 2-0 to the bottom of two.

Gallegos comes out to pitch the second with the lead now.

Marlow from the left side leads off for the Horns.
He grounds a single through the hole on the left side.

Boswell bats also lefty with one on.
The redshirt freshman third baseman with the comebacker to Gallegos who bobbles it and then picks it up and their is still time for the 1-6-3 double play.

Two gone as Cantu steps in righty with the bases now clear.
He walks on four pitches.

Gurwitz completes the first trip through the lineup for Texas in the nine
hole.
He bats righty with one on and two away and a chopper to second for a 4-3 out to retire the side.

The pitcher's best friend gets Gallegos through the inning unscathed and Pan Am still leads 2-0 after two played.

Mayes tries to right the ship and keep Texas close as he pitches in the third.

Victor Garcia Jr. leads off for Pan Am
The count goes full and another walk by Mayes.

Huckabay bats for the second time and a passed ball sends the runner to second and Mayes is back in trouble immediately.

Pitching change.

Lefty Jon Malmin is the new Longhorn pitcher making his fourth appearance on the year.

He faces the DH for the Broncs in Loredo, who bats left with two down and a runner at second.
A high hopper back to Malmin as he flags it on a leap and the 1-3 retires the side.

Pan Am adds another run and lead 3-0 to the bottom of three.

Gellegos back out for his third inning of work.

Mathis the Texas DH, leads off from the left side as he still looks for his first hit of the year and as a Horn.
Not this time as a grounder to first is taken to the ball for one away.

Johnson at the top of the order bats with one down.
A sharp one hopper to third is a 5-3 second out.

Shaw bats with two down.
The count is full and it plunks him on the knee to put him on first.
Maybe you start Shaw and try to manufacture a run with two outs.

Hinojosa up once more with one on and two gone.
Multiple throws to first a first pitch pitch out has the Broncs looking for him to go.
Shaw goes and almost stumbles on the break and is a dead duck at second on the throw to retire the side 2-4 on the put out.

A third of the game played and Pan Am with the 3-0 advantage.

Malmin out for his first full inning on the mound step on the mound for the Broncs fourth time at bat.

Mercer, the third baseman grounds to Hinojosa for the first out.

Gonzalez bats with one down.
His slow roller goes toward Hinojosa again and he charges and can't handle it and it is ruled an E-6 to put a runner on.

The top of the order again with Garcia bats with one on and one down.
Another walk put multiple runners on again for Pan Am as they have threatened every inning since they went down in order in the first.

Loncar bats with one down and two down.
The runners go and the pitch is dropped by Cantu and it's a double steal.
The count runs full and could use the K here.
A fly ball to right caught by Shaw and his throw is late and it goes as a SF and another run scores.

Pan Am leads 4-0.

Two away and one on for Victor Garcia Jr. Malmin like Mayes doesn't have good command of his pitches tonight and seems to be constantly behind the hitters on the count.
It helps when the batter swings at a ball in the dirt, which Garcia Jr. just did and after the 2-3 put out the swinging K retires the side.

But Pan Am with another unearned run this time keeps playing add on and leads 4-0 as it's getting serious at the Disch for Texas.

Gallegos has only given up one hit to Marlow on the night so far.

Hinjosa, who was batting when Shaw was gunned down, returns to the plate to lead off for Texas.
Hinojosa can't hold up on a swing and it's a K for one away.

Barrera up with one gone.
He is hit by a pitch as that is the second Horn to be hit tonight.

One on and one down for Marlow, who has the only knock for Texas in the contest.
He walks on four pitches to put two on as Gallegos is suddenly wild.

Boswell up with two on and one down and a chance for Texas to get on the board and cut into this lead.

Landon bats with one down.
Another walk puts him on for the third time tonight.

Davis bats with one on and one away.
Skip with a quick visit and heads back to the dugout.
A one hopper to third and it's a 5-4-3 twin killing to retire the side.

Halfway through the midweek game and it's all Pan American as they lead 4-0.

Gallegos comes out in the fifth and tries to become eligible for a big win if Texas doesn't rally.

Gurwitz leads off for the Horns.
Another four pitch walk and Texas has a lead runner.

Mathis bats as the DH with one on.
He grounds into a 4-6 force for one away as Mathis is still 0-for the season.

One down for Johnson with one on.
He ropes one to first and it eludes the first baseman and Johnson beats it out for an infield hit for only their second hit.

Shaw up withe two on and one down.
A foul pop on the left side is caught on the run by the third baseman for two away.

Hinojosa up with two down and two on as Texas still tries to tally for the first time.

Pan Am leads 4-1.

Your big power hitter Barrera is now the tying run at the plate with two down.
The coach comes to the mound and now returns.
Barrera steps in from the right side and a grounder to third goes 5U to end the inning.

Texas gets one back, but you hoped for more and through five Pan Am now leads 4-1.

Travis Duke, the junior lefty comes in to pitch the sixth.

Loredo leads off for the Broncs batting lefty as the bottom of the order is up.
A ground ball toward the hole on the left side and Hinojosa gets to it and unleashes a throw over Barrera at first and into the dugout for his second error tonight and Texas's third error.
The runner is awarded second.

Mercer bats righty with one on.
A liner to Shaw in right is one down as the runner has to hold at second.

Gonzalez bats from the right side with one on and one down.
A fly ball to Gurwitz this time is out two as the runner again holds.

Top of the order in Garcia, bats with the runner still at second with two away.
The count works full and Duke needs to shut this down right now.
A ground ball to short does just that and the side is retired.

Texas has played from behind all night and need to get back this one quickly as Pan Am leads 4-1 to the bottom of six.

Gallegos still works in the sixth, he has put several Horns on, but Texas has left them all stranded except one.

Marlow leads off for the Horns.
He lines one on the right side and the first baseman dives and snags it on the fly for a good play and one down.

Boswell bats from the left side with one down.
He lines one off Gallegos's glove and then beats the pitcher's throw for another infield hit for Texas.

Cantu bats with one on and one down.
The count runs full again as it has often tonight.
He walks for the second time to put two on.

Gurwitz bats righty with one gone and two on.
He grounds to second and the 4-6-3 DP ends the threat.

Texas just can't break through against Gallegos despite a sea of base runners.
So after six Pan Am still in the lead 4-1.

Kirby Bellow another lefty comes into the game to pitch as the seventh starts.

Loncar will lead off from the right side as his first batter to face.
A ground ball to Boswell is a 5-3 lead out.

Victor Garcia Jr bats lefty with one gone.
A ground ball up the middle and Marlow is there and he guns him out for two away.

Huckabay bats righty with two down.
A roller back to Bellow is a 1-3 out to retire the side.

They stretch in Austin in a game that has been all Pan Am so far as they lead 4-1.

Gallegos remains in the game having thrown over a hundred pitcher in the seventh.

Mathis at DH is still without a hit this year and a ground ball to first is booted and its an error to put him on.

Johnson brings the top of the order and another chance to get back in this game for the Horns.

He checks his swing and still grounds one back to Gallegos and the 1-4 force is one down as Johnson reaches.

Shaw bats with one down and one on.
Shaw drives a ball over the center fielder in the gap in left center and Texas has it's first extra base hit of the night.

The double scores the fleet Johnson and Shaw stands at second.
This brings the Pan Am coach out with a hook for Gallegos.

Pan Am leads 4-2.

Pitching change.

Clayton Haltom is the new pitcher for Pan Am and hurls from the right side.

Hinojosa up with a chance to try and shave the lead even further.
He bats with one on and Shaw at second.
A fly ball to center is a second out and Shaw holds.

Barrera bats righty with two away and tries to plate Shaw.
Really need this run to close the vise on the Broncs.
A pop up to the first baseman ends the inning.

Again Texas gets one run back, but you really wanted more in that situation.

Seven innings gone and the game grows late and Pan Am leads 4-2.

Texas brings in another freshman pitcher in right hander Kyle Johnston, the flame thrower with with a fast ball in the mid 90's.

Landon leads off for the Broncs in the eighth.

Loredo bats lefty with two down.
A liner to right is a single, for his third of the game.

Mercer bats with one on and two away.
Another full count in the game and a fly ball to center and Gurwitz gets to it and that retires the side.

Texas must get busy with the bats or Pan Am will break their 40 game losing streak to the Horns over about as many years. They lead 4-2 to the bottom of eight.

Haltom, who got the first two batter he faced in the seventh is back for the eighth.

Marlow leads off for Texas from the left side.
Yet another full count comes and a walk is yet another Horn base runner.

Boswell becomes the tying run up from the left side.

The Pan Am coach is out again and he brings in a lefty no doubt to face Boswell.

Pitching change.

Matt Rigby, is indeed a tall lefty, as the new pitcher for the Broncs.

Boswell back in the box from the left side to face him.
He shoots a liner to left center in the gap and to the wall for a rbi double as Marlow comes all the way around to score.

The Pan Am coach back out and another pitching change.

Pan Am leads 4-3.

Well NB, that snow ice cream sounds great. Has been a long time since I had any. If you have too much of that white stuff, feel free to ship all you want down here in Austin. Appreciate your devotion to these games. Now lets pull this one out.

A right hander is named Padrone that comes in for Pan Am.

Cantu faces him with nobody down and the tying run at second in Boswell.
The freshman catcher stands in right handed looking to at least finally knot things up.
A wild pitch puts Boswell on third and now you need some contact to tie things. The infield comes in.
A hard shot is caught on a slide by the second baseman for one away.

Gurwitz up with one away and the tying run at third and you really need to get it done here.
He gets it done as he sends a ground ball by the drawn in infield and that ties things.

Game tied 4-4.

Mathis the freshman DH is up without a hit all year. He still doesn't have one with a fly ball to center for two down.

Johnson up at the top of the order once again with two down and the lead run at first.
He swings at a ball down and out and K's to end the inning.

Texas finally evens things and after eight gone tied at 4-4.

Ty Culbreth comes into to pitch the ninth for the Horns and hopes to send it to the bottom half tied and give the Horns a chance to pull this game out.

The nine hole hitter leads off in Gonzalez from the right side and he is hitless on the season.
Yet another full count and here comes a big pitch and he walks him.
Not what you wanted there.

Garcia, the lead off hitter up with one on.
A 2-0 count brings out Skip. The zone has been tight both ways all game.
He lays down the bunt and it goes 1-3 for the sac to put the runner at second.

Loncar, a righty hitter bats with one down and the lead run at second.
A ground ball goes through on the right side and the runner holds at third.

Runners on the corners for Victor Garcia Jr. from the left side with one down.
For the second time in the game a Bronc batter fouls off a bunt attempt with two strikes for a strike out and a huge second out.

Huckabay bats with now two on and two down.
A ball gets away from Cantu for a passed ball as the runner goes to second.
Runners now at second and third.
Of course another full count and a big pitch comes a fly ball to deep center is caught by Gurwitz and Culbreth escapes the big jam.

After scuffling all night Texas will come to bat in the ninth with a chance to pull this one out.

Isaac Martinez, a right hander has come in to pitch the ninth for Pan Am.

Shaw will lead off for Texas looking to get things started and end this hard fought game.
You think another full count, you would be right.
Another huge pitch in this game is outside for ball four.

Hinojosa bats with the winning run at first.
He puts the bunt down and a close play at first, but it's only a 3-4 sac bunt.

Barrera up with one down and you would expect the intentional pass here.
That is the plan and they put him on to set up the double play.

Two on for Marlow and the winning run at second with good speed.
He steps in left handed against the righty Martinez with one away.
A long fly ball to the edge of the track in right is caught as Shaw tags and moves to third.

Runners on the corners and two down for Boswell, who had the big hit in the eighth to help tie it up.
He looks to win it now with a big clutch job.
Oh yeah, it's another full count and Barrera will be off.
Boswell with the big hit again as he grounds one through the hole on the left side and Texas comes all the way back to win it.

Texas wins 5-4! I want to take a breath and listen to Augie and let my snow ice cream settle after all this. Be back with a wrap up in a bit.

Didn't play well but clutched up when it mattered and got the win. Augie can coach them hard after this one and I'm sure he will.

Great job as usual on the PbP, NB! Hook 'Em!!
