As a tenor drummer in an Irish American pipe band I had a problem with playing British marches. I could not play music that glorified the oppressors of my ancestral homeland. I explained to the band leadership that playing this music was antithetical to our mission statement, but they didn't change their minds, so I quit the band. This Drum Major may be a principled woman. She should quit the band. Staying in but selectively opting out of certain pieces is the wrong answer. Either resign out of principle, or stick with it fully in all respects.

Exactly. The whole point of my email was to point out the whole university is scarred by a racist past. Don't anyone dare flash the hookem and cheer on UT while simultaneously shunning the school song. Idiots.
