Leadoff single, wild pitch and a fielders choice put a runner on third for UTA with two outs but Hollingsworth gets a line out to first to end inning. 2.5 in books still 0-0.
McElroy doubles to lead off;
Hall K's
Moynihan with bunt single advances McElroy to third;
Moynihan steals second;
Stell HBP to load bases;
Weiss with two rbi single and Horns lead 2-0 with runners on first and second and one out.
Very quick inning as 3 of 4 batters swing on first pitch and only 3 pitches to other batter. fly out and ground out end inning with no further damage. 2-1 Horns through 3.5.
Hinojosa draws a 4 pitch walk;
He is then picked off and caught stealing at second for first out;
Felts grounds out to third;
Carter grounds out to third.
Travis Duke now on to pitch for Hollingsworth who went 5 full and gave up one run on 4 hits. He had 3 k's and one base on balls. Very nice outing for him.
Weiss gets leadoff walk;
Payton with SAC bunt advances him to second with one out;
Hinojosa walks;
Double steal puts runners on second and third;
Felts grounds out to third failing to get run in;
Carter strikes out to end inning and Horns strand two in scoring position.
Thanks NB, gametracker obviously had the double play wrong but Knebel gets the last two outs and gets the save.
Horns win 2-1. It is good to get the first mid week win of the year but tonight was way too similar to last year in terms of the offense relying on what had to be almost perfect pitching. The horns had really only two real threats all night and thankfully got a two run rbi single from Weiss in the third but stranded two who got in scoring position with less than two outs in the sixth when an insurance run or two would have been huge. With Nebraska coming to town this weekend the bats better wake up.
We broke out some orange spikes tonight or turf
shoes with knobbies, hard to see which.
We got outhit 7-5, We had some good chances to score some insurance runs and left them stranded. I thought we would use the safety squeeze with Felts up after the double steal, but we didn't. I know they had the infield in which may have discouraged the bunt, but have seen Augie do it anyway and score a run.
Good outing for Knebel, to close out the game. I
know they wanted him to get his confidence back
after a shaky start to the season, but I hate seeing
the innings piling up for him so early again.
Another good win against decent competition. Same MO as last year, scratch out some runs and
hope that the pitching will hold on till we can get
to Knebel late. Hope the bats will warm up eventually. I was surprised some of the veterans from last year didn't see any action tonight like
Walla, Steinhagen, etc...
Nebraska coming in this weekend, they are supposed to be a good hitting team. This used
to be a great series in the past in the Big 12.
Should be another good test for our pitching staff.
Would like to see Urban throw some and see how
his arm is.
