UCF Series - We Won the Series 2-1

Reverse the 6 wtf losses and this team is a regional host.

BYU lost the second game of its series with Cincinnati tonight, leaving them with only two conference series wins to date. I'd feel sorry for them and their last-place position in conference except for the fact that they beat our *** (in Austin!), so **** those guys. And Pierce for losing to them...

I didn't watch but a small portion of the game, but I thought one play summed up this team and this season. I think it was 5th or 6th inning and UCF hits the ball to straight away center; runner is going, & CF makes the throw. My former 8 yr old and 10 yr old all stars NEVER made so many fundamental mistakes as we had on that one play. THAT IS COACHING or lack thereof. I guaran-damn-tee you no young kid I ever coached would have then or since played that ball that way, and Gus would have benched him for life. Again NO FUNDAMENTALS on this team.

Then when Pierce was nursing a small lead and watched his pitcher walk three straight batters??? At that point, I turned the game off and went to eat.

Texas won in spite of often playing like a 7 yr old, but we pay Pierce and these players too damn much money to play like that.

The only thing I dislike about BYU being is last place is that it means UH isn't.

2024 Texas baseball is consistently inconsistent and last night was that in a microcosm. Fortunately good Texas won out yesterday and of late is winning out a little more than bad Texas. We all just have to hope that good Texas shows up these last few weeks and for the tournament, presuming bad Texas doesn't take over and Texas misses out on the tournament entirely.

Pretty sure we are in the tourney, we could go deep in the tourney, or 2 and que, and I wouldn't be surprised at all with either.

wondering about some small tweaks to the defense, it has occurred to me that Belyeu is by far the best outfielder and therefore should be in CF, even when Thomas moves to the outfield. He has the best arm on the team and the most speed.

Just another data point to me on the poor decision making by Pierce where he handicaps his teams. Don't get me wrong, having Belyeu in RF is pretty fun, he does get his fair share of balls his way that teams hesitate to take an extra base on but if it makes us stronger up the middle? why not have him there? :e-thinking:

I watched the entire game and I don't know what the hell you are talking about, and since you don't know any of the players names involved, nor do you point out WHAT was wrong with what Gasparino did, I am going to say this is more Pierce hate that has to escape some kind of way since we won.

Big Friday night road win against a team that has camped out in the RPI Top 20 for most of the season.

Grubbs was on. This is what we need from a starting pitcher. (one more inning would have been even better)
:clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap::clap:

The only drawback is that both Boehm and DuP threw last night. So, for relievers, that leaves us:

O'Hara
Lummus
Tumis
Tole
Hurley

Hudson Hamilton

I think we'd like to save O'Hara for Sunday, in case LBJ craps out early and we need 4-5 innings from the middle reliever. Tumis is the only 1-2 inning "shut down" guy left unless Boehm or DuP pitch an inning (which they might). Hurley can go for 4-5 innings if he's having an "on" night--and you'll know almost right away. I put a space between the others and Hudson Hamilton, because I don't think Hudson has "arrived" yet. Next year he should be really good. He's got the 2nd or 3rd nastiest stuff on the staff behind Tumis and Boehm. All the underclassmen need to be cautioned not to leave raw meat hanging up in the middle/upper part of the strike zone.

Phil,

I don't "hate" Pierce, but he has proven (at least to me) that he isn't the person for the job and is only there because the replacement pool is nonexistent. Regardless of talent level (which doesn't seem to be there), a team can be fundamental strong. This one is NOT, and that is on the coaching staff.

I don't need to name names or call the kid out to make the point that the fundamentals were not and are not there. Like I said, I have seen 8, 10, 12 year old kids with the strong fundamentals, if not talent. Watch the play if you like, but from his positioning on the fly ball to his fielding the ball to his throw, everything was wrong. Again, he lined up wrong, he was out of position to make the throw, and thus had no momentum on his throw, and I submit that lack of the above gave the runner two, if not three step advantage.

For the money paid, The University deserves better, the season ticket holders deserve better, the fans deserve better, and the players deserve better. If "better" is out there, please tell me whom and where.

We've been to Omaha 3 times in the 6 full seasons that Pierce has been our coach. You have a really inflated opinion of what we 'deserve'.

Our batters are put away in order, 3 up, 3 down, in the top of the 2nd.

UCF's pitcher got through 2 innings throwing only around 20 pitches.

Bottom of the 3rd.

After walking a batter, and giving up a single, Ace Whitehead gives up a big 3 run blast.

3-0 them.

They've got 2 on (bottom of 4th) and 1 out.

Ace has just got to minimize damages here, and rely on our bats to pull through (which they very often do).

RBI single. Rats. (at least it wasn't 2RBIs or worse)

Now a hard hit ball is caught. 2 down.

Wild pitch. Runner advances to 3rd. Runner on 1st stays put.

C'mon Ace, just pitch for the final out here.

Ground out to Flores. Thankfully, that ends the inning.

After 4, it's

4-0 UCF

We're still in striking distance. Get a run or 2 here, a run or 2 there, and we can come back.
