Tyreke Evans and Dominic Cheek going head to head.

Already had a Barnes/Durant/Augustin reference.

Evans is 2008. Cheek is 2009.

Tyreke not too impressive for all the hype around him.

You've got to be kidding me.

Dominic Cheek received the most valuable player of the game, but there was no question Tyreke Evans was the most talented player on the court. He's a monster. Memphis is going to get a hell of a player.

I don't know how someone could watch that game and come away unimpressed. He didn't have his best game, and he still showed a versatile array of skills.

IMO since this is fun board, I would take Reke over Cheek any time of the day. Reke is a pretty complete player if you take a good hard look at his skill set.
Barnes would be happy to get one or the other, I just like Reke's over all game.

Come on SL, the guy is talented but there is NO WAY you can honestly tell me you watched that game and didn't see:

1. His scary lack of penetration quickness.

2. His huge tendency to overdribble sans necessity, (which anyone who watches 10 seconds of his highlight clips notices) especially with the right hand in and out move and the loopy crossover that can easily be stolen (two signature moves). Have to say, his in and out dribble could possibly be the best of all time if he would develop more of a threat to his left hand. It's like he's in slow motion.

3. How easy it would be for him to have a crappy game with his shot selection.

I was, though, largely impressed with how much bigger and more athletic he's gotten. He went from being a scrawny 6-4 2 years ago to a 6-6 man child who was the biggest player on the court. The way he glides around the court reminds me of LeBron--almost like he doesn't belong in the same game. Too bad looks like he's all but ready to commit to Memphis. Also, oddly, reminds me of Martell Webster with his body type and shooting...obviously has infinitely more handles.

On the flip side, I absolutely love Dominique Cheek. I hope we keep going after him hardcore. One of the featheriest touches and most under-control games I've seen in a while. Not Derrick Rose/Eric Gordon quick but the guy is sitll lightning when he wants to be and ******* can he pass the rock! Just a solid all-around player who has no problem playing defense or doing whatever the team needs to win. What are our chances now that he seems to have cooled on UNC, SL?

So, GoHornsGo90, that was supposed to be a critique of his game? You just described a future top 5/top 10 NBA draft pick to me.

Sure, he has areas of improvement. But he has one heck of a foundation to build upon.

I didn't mean to say I dislike Dominic Cheek. He's still a junior. He looks awesome as well.

As far as UT's chances for Dominic Creek, at this point IMO they're better than they are for Evans, if only because I don't see Worldwide Wes getting involved with Creek, so it makes the playing field a little more level.

For a game that was on ESPN here are things that I noticed:

He did show that he has the potential to be a superstar.
Didn't hustle.
Out of control at some times.

This kid is suppose to be a top 5 player. I expected my jaw to drop. When I watched Durant, Lebron, Telfair in high school, these guys made me hold my breath every time they got a touch. Tyreke seems over-hyped. The game was nationally televised, time to shine, he didn't IMHO.

When I watch a bunch of high schoolAAU games, one thing I notice is that kids aren't going to play at the same level every time. I'm not looking at their actual performance, as much as I'm looking for their potential at the next level.

To me, Evans showed everything he needed to in that regard. Whether he puts it all together or not isn't going to be determined in one game no matter how good the performance is.

He's not a Durant, Lebron, Telfair type of high school talent. He's certainly still a top 5 national player, especially in this weak class, and there have been times when he's looked just as impressive in his own right as other high school superstars. This didn't happen to be one of those nights.

Still, there were plenty of instances of jaw dropping plays if you knew what to look for.

American Christian sounds like one of those fake schools with about 20 students who all happen to play basketball. The kind with no real physical school cause all they do is travel with tutors and play all over the country. Is that what they are?

"So, GoHornsGo90, that was supposed to be a critique of his game? You just described a future top 5/top 10 NBA draft pick to me."

Why, yes...yes I did. Which is what he will be regardless of college production due to his reputation. You said you were impressed by him...I said I wasn't. I wasn't impressed with Greg Oden either--doesn't mean I'm idiotic enough to think he wouldn't be the number 1 pick in the draft.

The point is that lately there have been a large number of "prodigy" prospects that have been known by any who follow recruiting forever. It started with LeBron for most casual recruiting followers (I'm not talking about heralded prospects like Felipe Lopez, I mean guys post-LeBron who many knew during their early high school days and the media/services tried to hype them into "the next big thing"), then went to Telfair, Oden, Mayo (who has nowhere lived up to his original billing as one of the greatest players ever), Evans, and finally Stephenson.

Basically, I just don't understand what you expected...I mean you had to know he has star potential and can score at will, right? I guess what I'm asking is what else did you see that impressed you more than what you can tell from a highlight reel?

I guess I don't give a **** about exactlywhat level of otherworldly talent he possesses. To me it's enough he possesses a high level of talent in the first place.

Remember, I don't care about the NBA game. I care about college basketball. When I watch kids, I'm thinking about their impact on the college game. I'm not comparing them to Lebron, Oden, or whomever.

I also don't agree that Evans has been touted the way some of those guys have. He was highly thought of but he produced inconsistent results until the so called NBA camp this summer, which brought together elite prospects from all the different shoe companies. Among the best in the 2008 recruiting class, Evans scored at will, putting over 50 per game in a couple of performances. That shot his stock upwards, but I still don't think of him in the same class as other uber players.

So I'm not looking at him in that context. I'm looking to see what kind of impact a kid can make in college. He looks like he can do plenty of damage in his one year, whereever he ends up. The fact that he's still considering Texas piques my interest even more. In terms of incoming talents, only Durant would surpass him in the history of the school.

It just seems to me like we're coming to this from different perspectives.

I've said before he doesn't have the talent of a Kevin Durant. I do think he's on the same kind of level as Eric Gordon and Derrick Rose. He's not the same exact player as those guys, and they may have been a smidgen better at the same stage, but they're all on the same tier, IMO, with it being too soon to tell who ends up as the best of the bunch.

I also know this is a weak *** class. The last couple of years have produced so many outstanding freshmen, and the class of '09 is loaded, too. The class of '08 simply doesn't have the depth or quality of superstars of the last few years, so in comparison I think it makes Tyreke Evans stand out more than he would another year.

Nothing new. UT folks are expecting him to sign in the late signing period in May. He needs to make sure his academics are in order, and it's recruiting, so the chances for late dramatics are always possible, but there's nothing new to really report. As of now, I expect him to be wearing a Longhorn basketball uniform next year.

Okay, I understand what you are saying...don't need to get so hostile bro. All I was asking is what exactly did you like about the game that you saw, it wasn't a personal attack or anything. Obviously, I (like many other posters on this board) have a deep respect for your basketball/recruiting knowledge. Doesn't mean we aren't entitled to our own opinions man.

I'm often stunned by accusations of hostility. I'm not being hostile. I'm aggressive in my conversation. That's just as true in person as on message boards. Don't take it personally.

I'm not even quite sure what you're taking exception to on this thread.

I didn't say I was always stunned.

It's because much of the time it's not hostility, it's aggressively challenging someone's position, or aggressively defending mine.

I think it's fair to say I roll with a rougher crowd in terms of verbal gymnastics than many of you.

I don't know what "fortune" has to do with it.

You seem to have problems with me and the style in which I post. I seem not to care. I feel like we've found a workable posting relationship.
