Because you make record profits doesn't mean you immediately increase your cost structure so you can increase your fixed costs. Bonuses can be paid out that match profits and to avoid locking in your costs in case thngs go bad.

Also, in classic business, profits either get reinvested in the business or paid out to shareholders. Afterall, the owners of a publicly held company are it's shareholders. The job of management is to maximize shareholder return. Obviously there are many ways to do this.
