This was a great one... This was against a good Sr Sprinter, a future olympic hopeful and an already world champ gold medalist. Stacey and Angele are beasts! This is also w/out maybe our most talented 400 (Kendra Chambers.. Alicia Peterson will also be in the mix).
This is kind of not surprising I thought it was cool and weird he was committed to us in the first place. This guy is a potential olympian and bubba and staff is more of a distance and field coach. When coach Vig left for UVA, it slowed down the progress of the distance team. Vig really built a team who could potentially compete against CU. Coach Hayes is finally getting his recruits and the distance team shod be fine.
I'm referring to the XC/Distance team... They recruited Christensen and Dohner who are the top state distance runners. They should step in and immediately help the team. CJ Jessett got sick and was not able to compete after winning the Tx State meet on his very first college meet. The team did well at Regionals and the youngsters got some experience at NCAA. This team (if healthy) should improve from last yr.
The 800 squad could be interesting next yr. One of the top 800 runners of the class is considering TX.... We have a 400H from KSA who is part of this yr's Squad. I think he'll probably compete in this 400 during indoors though. He is close to a fellow KSA who has a blazing 800 time and did well at Youth World Champs... I think his PR is 1:46+. He is in Austin, but I'm not sure what's his status.
There are a few LOI they are probably waiting for to receive before the announcement. Of the ones I can mention:
Shanay Briscoe, A'lexus Brannon, Briana Nelson, Marielle Hall.... HUGE pick-ups. All 4 are amongst the best in their class... They All competed in IAAF Worth Youth Championship, which also includes the best of the best around the world. They did well as JR out of HS and Rep'ed USA well. There PBs are very impressive at their age.
The thing that's great about them is that they all excel in multiple events and could score on any of them.
These 4 student athletes alone are very very impressive. They are great quality ladies on and off the track who will represent UT well... and am excited to welcome them to Forty Acres.
Barring any last minute changes, there's one athlete remaining to be listed, I feel very fortunate to have at UT (plans to sign). She's another game changer who can score potentially 16-25 points at Nationals at some point of her college career.
So, 06, when is/might it happen? Another VJ type talent?
Bev doesn't do many announcements, do you think it might get reported on Dyestat or elsewhere?
That's a good question... The student-athlete is actually Not from the states, so if things line-up, I'm not sure if it'll get listed on dyestat, but that is definitely a good source.
Good point about Bev's announcements....
I do believe the distance runner (maybe a good project distance runner) did end up signing yesterday too... She's from the Abliene area and I bet you could probably find an article on her now.
BTW... VJ is one of a kind... She came close to topping Marion Jones' time. I hope she continues to train hard and study hard, and also found a good supporting cast around her. She can be something special for the USA if she wants to continue track.
It's still early in the recruiting signing period. There are a few distance runners who are looking at Texas still, so a few more names will prolly appear on the roster next yr.
Women finish in 7th place at Big 12 Indoor championships, scoring 58 points . . .
Texas A&M claimed the team title with 130.5 points. Texas Tech was second with 115, followed by Nebraska (96), Oklahoma (65), Kansas (63.5) and Iowa State (59).
I'll agree this wasn't the best effort. Our field events didn't come through as expected. They had potential and PRs to score real well. A few other spots here and there that lost on points too. This team is still young and injuries have affected the impact athletes. I say in 2 yrs once this recruiting class settles in and Bev fills in more missing spots, u're gonna see a totally different team. I remain very optimistic as the class and a healthy athletes are gonna make a huge difference!
Yet another one announced, adding to the impressive class!! Last 400m Hurdler we saw from Jamaica is the reigning olympic champ!!
Another name to look out for: Megan Siebert. She's expected to be part of the UT roster. She hasn't focused solely on Track in the past but has made huge strides since making a committment to track and could be a nice addition to the CC/Distance squad down the road.
This is what we need to do. We need to get to where in this (and other sports) we can not only win the Lone Star Showdown but the Big 12 and National Championships. We used to win a few fairly regularly but it has been almost four long years since we got one. Last year the Aggies got three. This is not acceptable. Remember - We are Texas.
Until an indoor facility is built I wouldn't expect much otherwise you will be disappointed. 4 points by the women & 1 point by the men? Beyond disappointing.
