Ok so I have recovered from my hypocracy.

The definite article is not part of the title. People from Ohio State claim that we should capitalize “The” even when it's not at the beginning of a sentence.

Writing the definite article "the" gives the impression that there is only one state University in Ohio.

No other state university assumes that "the" is part of the name.

Playing second fiddle to the class institution of Michigan, they need all the attention they can get. They don't begin to hold a candle to them academically and on the field they lag as well, all time. They are looked at as a bunch of douchebags as fans by the nation as well. Let them have their moment in the sun with stressing that word. Let them have the state of Ohio to claim as their own. They can have it. Swing State Aggy.

May the couches burn. (and dumpsters, and trashcans, and cars, and...)

so maybe the correct response is to put a "t" in front of EVERY school's initials. come to think of it, this might be fun...

When I worked for the state as a proofreader (

) it was official state policy to capitalize the "The" before University of Texas. So we would have to okay **** like, "Congratulations to Augie Garrido and The University of Texas baseball team for...."

It's hard to explain why it goes against many English Usage conventions.

As far as naming conventions go "the" is usually not part of a name for a reason. Definite and indefinite articles are not part of name because they must be changed at times to suit your meaning.

This is why there aren't any "The Ohio State University" students who are going to write for a living.

Does that sentence sound right when you force retarded grammar on it?

How about this one.

Archie Griffin, an Ohio State University football player, was arguable the greatest back in school history.

Or your version

Archie Griffin, a The Ohio State University football player, was arguable the greatest back in school history.

Utter and mystifying arrogance, I tell ya.

yet another reason I can't stand the sight of that school in Columbus.

adding a "t" to everyone can cause a bit of confusion.

Colorado becomes - tCU

Texas Christian becomes - tTCU

it seems like we have a stuttering problem in Lubbock - tTTU

i wonder if our friends in College Station would like to be called "taggy" to differentiate between them and the people out at tNMSU

It is the legal, official name of our university; The Ohio State University and it is on our diplomas, etc.

There are actually quite a few institutions of high learning with the word The as part of their name:
The Citadel
The University of Chicago
The University of Arizona
The University of Iowa
The University of Alabama
The University of Tennessee - Knoxville
The University of the Pacific
The University of the South - Sewanee
The University of Toledo
The University of Akron
The University of Mississippi
The University of Findlay

Plus if you see tOSU, then you know which OSU is being referred to immediately.

Need I go on?

Yes Skippylou you need to go on. Everyone above you listed starts with "The University" that is grammatically correct.

The Citadel does not have a college or university tag associated with it and thus that is why it is simply called The Citadel.

In regards to Ohio State the way the word "the" is used is what is open for debate. If you throw emphasis when saying The Ohio STATE University it makes more sense in that you are referring to the school as the state university of Ohio.

However most people it seems put the emphasis at the beginning so it reads THE Ohio State University. That is dumb. Stop it.

I'm pretty sure tOSU didn't start here at Hornfans, although that'd be allsome if it did since I've seen it in various places.

I think it is unstable to have State and University in the same title. Ohio State University, Arizona State University, Oklahoma State University etc.
