Top RB Recruit in Texas?

Heard on 1300 this morning that the top RB in Texas (name slips me) was a big UT fan ala Adrian Peterson but Texas never came calling so he's going to mobilehoma. Anyone know the "behind the scenes" story there because I'm sure Mack had a definite reason for not going after him.

p.s. not that I'm looking to air dirt on the kid but trying to understand why he was ignored (grades, character?)

Texas' issue with Jermie Calhoun was grades.

OU doesnt take issue with grades because they can just buy them.

Mack passed on Calhoun because of grade/character issues. Yes, he initially wanted to come to Texas, but Mack had zero interest from the get go so I think that says something in itself right there.

Hate to rehash this one again, but bottom line is that the staff was very concerned he could keep the grades to stay in school. Remember how sensitive an issue this was last spring when we had a couple guys that became academically ineligible. I also don't want to go down that road again of academic standards of us vs. OU, but for those who seriously consider the two landscapes know there is something there...

Calhoun has qualified well enough he was planning on enrolling early but decided to play basketball instead.
I guess OU was paying off the teachers in his HS too as well as the ACT guy loggings scores.

The question wasn't whether he would qualify academically under NCAA standards. It was whether he could make the grades at UT to stay eligible.

That isn't a concern at OU.

Jermie was considered a big grade risk during early recruiting and Mack backed off. Mack does not want to go after any more grade risks after the last few years.

Yeah, Since 73, OU would never "pay off teachers" to change grades to get a recruit into OU, would they? Or maybe your memory doesn't go back too far.
Not saying it still goes on, BTW, or casting aspersions on Calhoun.
Mack Brown is being extra careful after the bad experiences with recent grade and character issues, and it will cost UT in some recruiting situations.

I don't ever post on here, but I do read here almost everyday and just wanted to give my opinion.
I go to UT now, but I graduated in 2005 from Athens High School, and as a junior I had the privilege to see Adrian Peterson play. Watching him was incredible. Whether or not you were a recruiting expert or a ditzy cheerleader, you knew he was incredible. He ended up with I think 15 carries for 300 yards and 6 touchdowns... in the first half. I also saw Cedric Benson in his Senior state championship game and he was also impressive, although not as impressive as Peterson(Given it was on the 5A level against a team that was good enough to make it to the state championship).

I went back to watch Athens play Van and Jermie Calhoun this year and I was hoping to see something special. What I saw was a good 3A running back. He didn't have breakaway speed, he wasn't shifty, and he didn't break tackles all that well. His stats weren't terrible... He ended up with 33 carries for 150 yards and 4 touchdowns. But at the 3A level, I would expect one of the nations top backs to have a few jaw dropping runs. If I hadn't known how highly he was ranked, I would have thought he was just a good player. I also saw Athens play Chapel Hill and thought that Matthew Tucker was more impressive (#36 in LSR 2009). He had 20 carries for 187 yards and 3 TD's in his game against Athens.

I don't see how in the world Jermie Calhoun can be ranked so high. He was no where close to Adrian Peterson or Cedric Benson. If those guys would've played on the 3A level, their numbers would have been out of this world ridiculous. I think this is a big miss by the recruiting experts, but then again what do I know. I guess we will see.

I haven't seen Calhoun play but comparing him to Benson and Peterson is gonna make anyone look bad. Ced is probably the best high school RB in the history of the state and AP has been incredible everywhere.

Yeah, and I think Sam Bradford kinda sucks!

Well ESPN has him as the #1 running back, and Rivals has him as the #2 running back. Both higher rankings than Benson was out of high school. If he's going to be ranked that high, I think it is a fair comparison.

73,

To succeed at a bottom-feeder academic school like OU, one doesn't need much scholastic acumen. Nobody should need to change a grade there since the educational challenge one gets at OU isn't much better (or maybe worse) than many community colleges in Texas.

That still doesn't keep that "university" from having one of the worst records of cheating in NCAA history. It's pathetic that an incredibly poor academic institution STILL has found it necessary to continue a persistent pattern of cheating to recruit and to keep athletes in school.

The only apparent reason for the existence of that school is its athletic department since it's academics certainly aren't setting anything on fire. It will be an eternity (translate: never) before OU ever reaches The University of Texas's academic standing.

At 108th out of 125 national universities, OU is a true bottom feeder:

I thought a poster stated last year that one knock on Calhoun was that he informed the staff that his grades were in order, but that proved inaccurate. No doubt he had some grading and test issues, but if he wasn't upfront about it, good reason to pass.

The player I was specifically referring to was former Galveston Ball High School quarterback Kerry Jackson, whose transcript was altered so that he could get in to Oklahoma, and OU ended up forefeiting the eight games in which he played, an OU coach resigned, the Ball High coach was fired.
Now does your memory recall anything about this, Since 73?
You can save the "OU knew nothing about it" argument for your buddies back home.
There was at least one more, center Mike Phillips, also altered.
