Top 5 biggest changes since you were on campus

That weird street preacher dude (Cedric, I think). He preached for months, wearing black clothes and waving a Bible at the crosswalk on Guadalupe. Then one day he was selling cookies at a cart in front of the Co-op.

The Silver Dollar Dance Hall/nickel beer night or quarter pitchers

happen today)

I'll Play...in no particular order:

1. Nau's
2. My fraternity house (moved down the street)
3. My first apartment complex (Rio Nueces)
4. The house I rented my Jr/Sr year at 910 W. 23rd street
5. East side upper deck
6. Turbo T-Man
7. My PO Box next to sound exchange
8. Mad Dog & Beans
9. House of Tutors...weren't they originally at the bottom of Towers?
10. Last but, not least......Buffalo Club!

Those that graduated in May '08 will soon be able to add to the list that they remember when ESB (Experimental Science Building) still stood on campus... By the end of July, it will be a pile of rubble.... And a couple of years from now, a brand new building will be standing there... Fully air-conditioned and up to all the current safety standards!

if you took the campus tour as a high school senior, you may remember that the experimental science building is as long as the tower is tall.

i showed up in 97, so lets see. SSB opened that semester but i wasn't there to see that 'change', football stadium, watched ACES building go up, myers field, they started but did not finish the dorm on clark field, i saw texas textbooks and the other bookstore get RUNNOFT by the co-op, barnes and noble get built, all nationsbank atms on campus changed to bofa, new football coach, blocking off speedway, opened the observation deck.

have no clue what all has happened since i've left.

this thread has made me think - my time on the 40 is bookended by 2 football games: my 2nd game as a freshman was ucla in 97 and my last game as a student was vs colorado in dallas in 2001. that's like a swift kick to the left nut followed by another to the right nut a little over four years later.

Great thread. We've veered off on a pretty good rabbit trail. What great memories...

Gotta weigh in too: Not sure if all these things are gone, but I'm guessing they are...

GM Steakhouse, Holiday House ($1.99 chicken fried steak dinner!), Austin Cue Club (not on campus)
The old weightroom at Gregory gym with Tom Landry's intramural boxing champ picture from 1945 by the door. (big fans & no a/c)
West Mall Shanty - remember when the corps turds handcuffed a couple of their pledges to it in their underwear?
Pushball - guessing they've outlawed that by now
Greeks vs GDI full pads FB game put on by the Wranglers
C lot parking under Memorial Stadium

Changes for the good:
I heard they let you go up to the Tower observation deck now.
Football, basketball, baseball teams are all damn good.

‘80-’85:

HP 15C
Pay Phones
Student Union Films
Flapjack Canyon

And shuttered on my watch-
The Armadillo

'72-'76 for me...

Most of the major changes I recall already have been noted. Some additional ones are:
5. More sidewalks added to replace worn grass paths. (UT was anal about students not walking on grass.)
4. Eli's Club on Lamar - an upscale place to meet older girls (in their mid-20s and up). Hey, what the hell..
3. The Flaggon - a great dive bar (before the term became popular) with cheap, cold pitchers - one block west of The Drag near 26th.
2. Streakers
1. Getting into a basketball game at Gregory showing only my student ID and grabbing a seat along the base line to watch my bud, Harry Larabee.

Those indeed were good days. Hard, but good.

You all have brought back a lot of memories. '76-'80 for me. Sounds like RomaVicta and I were there at the same time. Just to pile on:
It was a Hell of a lot easier to get into UT back then.
I still remember the temp Texas Tavern and the 18 yo drinking age.
Mucho drinking in the dorms back then, especially on game day.
The comment on us all being hippies is pretty dead on.
Good times!
