Top 10 Running Backs in Texas History

Pretty good list.
Any list that starts with Earl.....
Joe Washington and Greg Pruitt were both madman. After they tortured UT, they tortured the Oilers.
Peterson might move up over time.
Sims you could argue about forever.

And 4 went to ou.

His lack of NFL accolades keep him off this list. He's got some time though.

High School.
3 consecutive state championships with Lee.

College
Four-year starter
Doak Walker Award winner
finished college career with 5,540 rushing yards
ranks sixth all time in NCAA Division I-A rushing history
2004 All-America selection.

Pros
1st round draft pick, played in 35 games in 3 seasons. Amassed 410 yards and 10 TD's.

I think Cedric's HS career was amazing. FIFTEEN state championship game TDs (3 X 5) is just ridiculous.

Based on HS, college and NFL - this is a good list.

hall is even one more step removed - nothing to speak of in college.

Is this list based on High school or college or pro or all three? If it is High School then Cedric should probably be top 5 if not number 1. He is quite possibly the best high school running back this state has ever seen.

Where's Ricky Williams??? Since you only need to have played in Texas for one of the 3 levels (e.g., Adrian Peterson), how does Ricky not make this list?
- High School: 2,099 yards and 25 touchdowns as a senior in high school
- College: The real career yardage leader in college even while splitting carries with the #7 person on this list for 2 years (screw Ron Dayne and his 4 years as a starter); Heisman Trophy winner; career TD leader; holds or shares 20 NCAA records
NFL: Hasn't lived up to his expectations (general apathy towards football and hitting the bong sure didnt help), but did lead league in rushing with 1,853 yards in '03; amased 7,112 rushing yards and 1,899 receiving yards in his NFL career

Oh, and Ced should also be on that list, no doubt about it. A ridiculously badass high school running back, and 6th all time in NCAA rushing. Even with a sub-par NFL career so far, that worthy enough to make the list.

I think it is based on where you played your High school football or where you were raised. Ricky is from California so he does not qualify.

I see, so its all based on playing high school football in Texas, and after that it doesnt matter where they played their college or NFL career.

1. 11,232 Kenneth Hall, Sugar Land, 1950-53
2. 8,855 Wes Danaher, CC Calallen, 1992-95
3. 8,441 Rodney Thomas, Groveton, 1987-90
4. 8,418 Cedric Benson, Midland Lee, 1998-2000
5. 8,411 Robert Strait, Cuero, 1985-88

About Hall. Link-The Link (good read)

His record for 100-yard games, 38, stood for 33 years until a kid from Florida named Emmitt Smith broke it.

As a senior in 1953, against Lutheran High of Houston, he rushed for 520 yards, scored seven touchdowns and kicked seven extra points. Then, with the game in the second quarter, he came out(for good).

How is Ricky Williams not in the Top 10? He won the Heisman and was the leading rusher in college history? His pro career has been mostly downhill after some good early years, but its certainly better than AP (so far) and some of those other guys, and his college career is the best of any back on the list by any objective measure. I know he did not go to hish school in Texas, but that is not indicated as requirement. Well, maybe it is an unwritten requirement since that is the only reason you could keep him off the list.

Keep in mind that Ced's 8,418 were compiled over a three year period as opposed to the other guys in the top five who got there numbers over four years. Lee Freshman is separate from Lee Highschool and the players do not play varsity until they are Sophomore or higher. One more year at the varsity level and Ced would have easily cracked the no. 2 spot and would have been pressing Hall's numbers. And he did that in one of the toughest divisions in the state for three straight years. Plus what he done here at UT (no matter how underappreciated he is here), it's a no brainer that he's on any list that talks about Texas RB products.
