Tommy Nicholson

Is this team's improvement over last year's the Tommy Nicholson effect?

This Guy Thinks It Might Be

I hope it is. Nicholson was one of my all-time favorite Texas baseball players.

I hope this season's improvements mean that this Tommy (along with the incredibly smart hard-worker, Skip Johnson) can evaluate talent and recruit, and is getting off his butt and traveling more than a two-hour drive from Austin to actually watch kids play as part of his evaluation process.

And maybe this Tommy can actually get a tiny bit of incremental improvement in kids' hitting.

I see improvements for sure. Not just in hitting, but in the team's fight.

Any idea why?

Augie, Nicholson, maybe even the threat that Patterson brought?

Or the luck of the draw in recruiting?

Nicholson has got a runners thrown out on the base paths, but maybe that was just the pressure of being so anemic at the plate this year and last.

We're looking better, but still 7th in conference in batting average.

two more base running blunders from third this weekend, but can't argue with two consecutive games in which the entire line-up hits safely.

Hi Endust,

After one of the weekends earlier in the season, the Texas team batting average was .237. Now, after sweeping OU, it's up for the second time this year again to .268.

It's amazing to me that with a team batting average that low that this team is leading the conference. But I guess that speaks as well to the thud of the current bats, the 2.12 team ERA, and the usually clutch defense.

Stats for conference games:
[pre]
TEAM BATTING G Avg
---------------------------------
1. Texas............... 12 .284
2. TCU................. 12 .280
3. Oklahoma State...... 12 .272
4. Oklahoma............ 9 .269

TEAM PITCHING G ERA
---------------------------------
1. Texas............... 12 2.43
2. Kansas.............. 12 2.63
Oklahoma State...... 12 2.63
4. Baylor.............. 11 2.67

It helps that we've gotten hot lately. I believe the broadcasters said we are batting north of .300 over the last 15 or so games.

I honestly thought that Nicholson was a head-scratching hire and maybe would be Augie's undoing at Texas.

I still think we make too many base running blunders, but whatever TNic is doing, it seems to be working.

Remove the 21 hits in 152 AB's (.138) from earlier in the year by guys who no longer sniff the field (Montalbano, McGuire, Culbreth, and Silver...the team average jumps to .286. These remaining 10 batters are the ones we play with, and contribute to the actual batting proficiency of this team. The others were sent to the pine quite a while ago.

add, subtract, whatever, this team has stunk it up the past two nights. Shutout over 18 innings? Just pathetic.

living on two outs, statistically will work out to bad production, it's luck.

I think NCSU shut us out over a double header back in 2005 and we made it to Omaha, but this offense is fragile as eggs.
