Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers...

One of favorite shows of all time was TP and Heartbreakers at the Woodlands.

I'm okay with the Bruce and Tom Petty as two of the best live acts America has produced. I also think that Neil Young and Crazy Horse have to be in the top five.

I revisited the original comment about TP and Bruce, and the term "American" was used. My mistake, I thought the claim was the best from "America." I realize that Neil is from Canada. The term "America" does not necessarily equate to the United States of America. Rolling Stone magazine has an article on Neil during the Rust Never Sleeps era titled, "The Last American Hero." (maybe they got it wrong too)

From Wikipedia,
The Americas may alternatively be referred to as America;[1][2] however, America may be ambiguous, as it can refer either to the entire landmass or to the United States of America.

While many in the United States of America generally refer to the country as America and themselves as Americans,[44] many people elsewhere in the Americas resent what they perceive as misappropriation[45] of the term in this context and, thus, this usage is frequently avoided.[46][47][48] In Canada, their southern neighbour is seldom referred to as "America", with the United States, the U.S., or (informally) the States used instead.[47] English dictionaries and compendiums differ regarding usage and rendition.[49][50]

I've gotten snickers and "Soy Americano tambien"s from South Americans when I'm speaking English and I say "Americans..." Si, yo se.
Neil Young Side Note:

-A friend of mine got married at his (now) in-laws house in Los Gatos a few years back in mid-October. The reception was outside without a tent. Their first dance? Havest Moon
under a full moon. Pretty sweet.

"The term "America" does not necessarily equate to the United States of America."

If this is the case, Rush is the best "American" band.

No Dylan? And Springsteen's early stuff was great but he kind of regressed over the years. Bob Seger? Easy to argue with that one.

And some random thoughts:
What about Buddy Holly?
As another aside, Eric Burdon and the Animals (from England) or War (from California) with Eric Burdon have not really withstood the test of time. Why do you think so few think of the group when talking about 60s music?

There is no telling what Buddy Holly could have done. All of his songs were essentially recorded in 18 months. I always thought Petty's music was closely related to Holly's and what his music would have become. The same for Marshall Crenshaw.
