From those with a bit more knowledge how do you feel about the Team after week 1 ? Myself a bit more output at the plate then last year. Pitching looked good of course this early your still evaluating. First week errors weren't to bad. Overall B+ ?

After just one series and seeing them in two games, it is way too early to predict what will happen
with their hitting. However, relative to this point of the season, I would grade them a little higher
than B+. The following are very pleasant surprises:

1. There does not seem to be any weaknesses in the infield. They look very smooth for the first games.

2. Weiss has very good range at 2nd and McElroy will save a lot of throwing errors this year. They both
look like a returning veteran at that position.

3. Hinijosa looks to live up to his billing. Carter has a strong arm at 3rd.

4. The two JC pitchers that showed up on the roster after last summer were good finds. C.Cox and T.Marlow
each made solid contributions in two games. They hopefully will shore up the middle relief position well.

5. For the first game started, 7 solid innings from both F.Parker and D.Peters was impressive.

6. Overall team speed seems much better this year. There will be more hit & runs.

I'm loving the team's morale and excitement. Looks like the guys are truly excited to play and enjoy one another. Quite a change from the complacency for the last few years. We are owed nothing, and our name won't get us wins anymore. This team looks like they get that and are ready to fight for each inch...so much more enjoyable to watch than entitlement.

We're hitting better...Even in our loss we had 7 singles, I just think we faced a good pitcher. Last year we lose the Sunday and/or Tuesday game.

The best change I see so far is that we put the ball in play more often. We don't take called 3rd strikes or take those gawd awful wild swings of the past 3 years. That, and we are taking advantage of our speed by stealing and hit/run more often.

My concerns are Hinojosa's fielding, which I have no doubt will come around -- He has the talent; ----and I'm worried about Thornhill as Saturday starter. He hasn't shown me in 2 years that he can handle it.

In the win over UTA we got outhit 7-5. The bats and consistant hitting with a little more power is my concern.
That game looked like a carbon copy of last year when we
won. Hang on for dear life till we can get to Knebel, this
puts a lot of pressure on every pitch and play. We don't get
many laughers against decent competition.

The fielding does appear to be better and Weis more comfortable at second than he did at third now. C.J. can
certainly make all the plays at short, just need to keep his
concentration and not try to do too much. Such as when
you get a bad relay throw go for the sure out at second
and forego the double play.

Felts seem to be solid this year behind the plate with a great
arm. Only weakness he seems to have is blocking the low
pitches at times.

The outfield seems very strong with Payton and Stell and
whoever we choose to put in center. Lots of speed to
cover the big outfield at the Disch.

The pitching has many options and Urban has yet to pitch.
Marlow has been a surprise as a pitcher. He looks like he
has nothing as far as velocity, but just gets people out.

Thornhill seems to be starting at this point mainly due to
experience. Hollingsworth or Duke seem like candidates
for the Sunday start. Though maybe they need Duke as
another lefty out of the pen.

We need to be smarter on the base paths as we have at
least one or two absolute bone headed mistakes in each
game. Getting picked off first when your down 3 runs
late in the game is a prime example against Sac. State.

It's a talented team with a lot of different parts, some have not even been used yet such as Walla and Steinhagen. It
will be interesting to see these parts are used as the season
progresses..
