Thoughts on the upcoming SDSU game

That first game with SDSU is going to be a tough game. They will press and run like A&M. If Horns haven’t learned to handle the pressure, they will have problems. The last game these two played, Horns had trouble shutting down the perimeter. Horns also did not get to the FT line, going 6-7 from there. Excellent percentage, way too few attempts. Those two areas contributed hugely to the loss. The 23 TOs didn’t help but the Horns forced 19 TOs themselves. SDSU averages 9.5 steals a game. Texas 7.8 spg.

They do start a big front court with Jessika Bradley (6-3 Jr. F) combining with Paris Johnson (6-4 Jr. C) inside. They both average over 6 rpg and combine for over 19 ppg with Johnson averaging over 11 ppg. Ten players have played in at least 22 of their 31 games. Six are averaging between 23 and 35 minutes a game. In their conference title game which went to overtime, eight players got in. The five starters played between 27 and 44 minutes. One other player had 22 minutes. Two played 3 & 4 minutes. It’s a very short rotation that plays based on minutes played although they do have ten players that have gotten into at least 22 games.

They are averaging more TOs than the Horns (18.8 to 17.5). Johnson (55) and Bradley (60) have combined for 115 blocks. Neither is prone to get in foul trouble.

It could be a very close game, if the Horns are struggling against SDSU’s press. Horns need to get Ashleigh, Kat, Brit, Erika, and Yvonne open looks and they need to get to the FT line while not turning over the ball. Shots inside will be well defended by SDSU. Horns will have to guard the perimeter against Quenese Davis, Coco Davis, and Jene Morris. Those three were 6-12 from BTA in last year’s game and accounted for 43 of the Aztecs’ 60 points.

Of course, in Texas’ favor, Ashley, Ashleigh, Yvonne are now sophs, not freshmen. Cokie supplies additional offensive power inside. And they are playing in Austin, not at SDSU’s place.

Texas and SDSU are 1-1. Texas won the first game: 69-58 on Nov. 25, 1995 in Austin, Texas while losing the second game 60-55 on Dec. 30, 2008 in San Diego, CA. Look for this to likely be decided by a run in the second half.

from West Virginia and Lamar:

story from WV website.

From a Morgantown paper, the selection story. The WV coach is not too happy to be coming to Austin.

Story from Lamar. They’re happy to be coming to Austin.

Neat way to travel to find out where you are going in the NCAAs. Wish we could do something like this here.

From the Beaumont Enterprise, Lamar has some good memories from their last NCAA trip to Austin in 1991.

As far as I can tell the squads have faced just one common opponent this season in OU. The Horns split with the Sooners, winning by 18 in Norman with OU returing the favor with a 15 pt. win at the FEC. The Sooners drubbed SDSU by 39 pts., though interestingly, the Aztecs had played current #7 (and #2 seed) Notre Dame close in the previous contest, losing by just 5 points, 84-79. Last season's loss to the Aztecs notwithstanding, this is a game the Horns should win. SDSU finished 3rd in the Mountain West with 6 league losses and made the NCAA field by virtue of winning the conference tourney; the only other league team in the field is TCU, which lost in the MVU semis but is seeded higher (#9) than the Aztecs. Had SDSU not pulled out the OT win vs. Utah in the final they would have had to settle for an NIT bid so all credit to them for winning win it counts.

This is not a good match up for us. They have really good guard play and at least two players who can score in bunches, whereas we have nada.

I will not be at all surprised if at the end of the day we are one and done on our home court.

I am still scratching my head as to why GG is having so much trouble getting traction since her arrival. It is not at all what I expected.

Perphaps no one has asked them. Certainly the staff and SID office seem open to ideas. Not to say that new ideas will come to pass, but at least they won't get dismissed out of hand.

It's certainly something I will ask Coach G about this summer camp, if my memory holds up.

story from Nicole Vargas of the San Diego paper on her arrival to Austin.

sounds about right that no one she spoke to knew about the WBB NCAA tourney being held here.

Story about the Davis sisters , primarily Quenese. Quenese sounds like an excellent PG, able to pass, shoot and lead the team. Ashleigh will have her hands full going against this senior.

Problem is, at least last time I saw her play, was that's the only thing she did.

Hmmm. American Statesman says "She notched 220 assists this season, a Southland Conference record.

And she still has no qualms heaving a three-pointer, as evidenced by her 107 treys, which also are a conference record."

Seems like more than just a 3 point shooter.

Seattle, you don't sound nervous, you sound convinced.....

Not me, not yet!!

I think we can win this, but am nervous.....

i'm nervous, but then again, i'm nervous before every game. maybe i should say cautiously optimistic. we can win this game. playing at home, in front on the home crowd. no excuse but to feed off that energy and play 40 minutes of good basketball. let's go horns!!!

TEXAS!!! FIGHT!!!

If we play 40 minutes of basketball we will beat SDSTand W.Virginia And we have to guard on defense, W ith offense clicking at the beginning of the game, and not digging a hole to climb out of.Switch the defense up too. Dont let either team get comfortable I am really interested to see will the SENIORS finally lead us
