Here's a woodland that's not full of predatory creatures — unless you consider tempting homestyle pies a danger. In Austin's new Woodland, a casual restaurant at 1716 S. Congress Ave. (441-6800), the pies come in an assortment of flavors, including a tall apple pie whose slices of fruit are stacked higher than practically anything you've encountered before. The pies are made by Mercedes Reed, the original pastry chef at Starlite, which shares two of the same owners as the Woodland: Michael Terrazas and Vince Rawl. The third owner is executive chef John Wolfe, who was the original sous chef at Starlite. Wolfe's signature meatloaf has become the eatery's most popular dish within weeks of launching. The comfort food restaurant, which also serves meat pies and spaghetti and meatballs, is open for dinner 5 to 11 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday. Brunch is 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
