The Wire 3/9 (Minor Spoilers)

well i started watching on the second season and didn't get to watch season 1 until last year. i filled in the gaps and knew it was the best thing on tv without seeing season 1. so i disagree.

Ah, that makes sense, because that's when I was trying to explain to the wife about the cops' tradition of bringing in dead cops and lying them on the pool table for a drunken wake.

As not a 20-something, I had high hopes for the Sun storyline. The problem was it was not up to the usual standards. Simon in an interview a long time ago said that great writers don't tell, they show. Unfortunatley, the entire newpaper storyline was written rather shallow, with more 'speeches' than dialogue and character development. It was forced.

Still, a fun season though nowhere near the great ones. Sad to see this show go. Kudos to HBO for continuing to run a show about the demise of the American City and the African-American community that basically no one watched.

For a show that brought a humanity to some of the worst people in society, the newspaper story arc was the worst part in the five-season run.

The characters were caricatures; the storyline all but ignored the Web's deep influence, and its conclusion was cheap and easy. They had a chance to tell a story about the decline of a once-dominant medium, but it just seems like it served as a way for David Simon to air grievances.

I enjoyed how the police department reset at the end to the way it was in season 1. Sydnor is now playing the part of McNulty from season 1, going outside the chain of command to push a much-needed real investigation of the drug syndicate in baltimore. Again we have a police commissioner who will push fake stats to hold the favor of the corrupt mayor. I guess Carver is somewhat like the Lt. Daniels of season 1, having past ethical problems but now turning into real police as he rises up the ranks. I could see Carver running the new major crimes detail on the investigation that Sydnor is now pushing.

san,

What I'm saying is the cameos were rather pointless... Simon could've just left them out. But if you subtract all of the newspaper nonsense, there's plenty of room for a different storyline that could possibly have made use of these characters. Example - seems like prostitution would've been a really good theme to tie in... other than Season 2 w/the Russians it was hardly ever touched upon. Bottom line, greatest show ever w/a somewhat lackluster finish.
