The Walking Dead

I love zombie movies, so I loved the idea of a zombie TV show since it would really allow you a lot more time and freedom to explore aspects of zombie apocalypses than a 90 minute movie cant. Impressions from first episode:

Main character goes into a coma pre-apox and wakes up perfectly fine post-outbreak....really? did somebody not see 28 days later?

Very very disappointed about "sleeping" through the outbreak phase of the zombie apox since it's the most fun part. waking up once people are in survival hideout mode takes a lot of fun out of it. maybe throughout the series they will flashback to the outbreak and explore the cause because if they don't they left a lot of story on the table.

liked the horse idea, dont think ive ever seen that in a movie.

the cop 'sleeping' with his "dead" partner's wife already, i guess. seemed pretty quick although they never specified the time frame that he was in a coma

decent pilot episode, left lots to discover in future episodes so i will keep watching.

Apparently it based on a comic -- am not a comic reader so cant really say -- but am sure somebody here can fill us in on that (w/o spoliers).

One thing I noticed among the atlanta zombies is that there seemed to be a leader -- guy in the bus. This reminded me of similar storyline in "I Am Legend." But I missed quite a bit as trick or treaters were still coming by -- so perhaps I am missing that completely.

Yes, the comic came out long before 28 Days Later, and that is how it starts.

I will tell you this, if this show is anything like the comic, do not look forward to "feel-good" moments. The comic goes to some very dark places, and once it gets there and you think there will finally be some light, they go even darker!

i saw this by accident last night. Flipped on AMC and saw that they were showing it all night, then realized it was a new series premier. caught the pilot from the beginning. i agree with the op on the beginning, but it is a series and i'm sure they will have plenty of time for flashbacks during the series. this was a pilot episode and i think they did the right thing on trying to move the story forward. i was impressed with it. i hope it moves in the right direction.

Current fascination with zombies is nothing compared to vampires. Emotionally neglected tweens don't get dressed up like zombies to go to school, they don't base their love life decisions off of zombie movies, and the combined total of vampire movies in the past few years probably equals the lifetime total of zombie movies. One zombie TV show with the last zombie movie probably a few years ago equates to a fascination? Plus, it is far more fun to plan for a zombie apox than it is to plan for vampire attacks.

Speakiong of zombies on television, the Community Halloween episode with the zombie sub-plot was genius.

Y'all are going to love this show. It tracks to the comic for the most part and Robert Kirkman is very involved. If you want to spoil the details, get the trades and read up as it's to Issue #78 and it'll blow you away -- one of the best books out there right now.

And yep, it gets lots worse and those of you hoping for flashbacks are going to be sorely disappointed unless they veer off of Kirkman's master plan. It goes forward only.

Who else besides Son is reading the series?

Heh, love the book, but some days it is like getting kicked in the *** one hundred times and just when you think it is over, they turn you around and kick you in the balls 35 times!

For the most part, that's some H'Wood "extra" for you. I think that entire crew of folks, other than Glen and the girl with the gun, are new from the books -- it's been a while since I read the first arc since the book is at #78 now. Looks like we're getting enough different stuff in the show to keep those of us who know where it's going in suspense.

I'm lovin' it!

If you haven't read the books, give 'em a shot. I'd sure be interested to hear if anyone picks up the books based on the show. Sure hope the ratings are good as I'm really looking forward to The Governor...

This is huge news! The show has been very well done so far and with what I know is coming, 13 more episodes ought to get us to the Governor.

Y'all enjoy the ride.

Dang, that was a solid episode in the life of Rick Grimes and the gang. I saw that Amy was killed but who else besides the wife beater died. Thought I saw at least a 3rd.

What happened to the dang lines they strung out through the trees with the bells on them last episode? Did Merle make it back early and pull 'em to let the Walkers in on the camp? I like it that there's enough that's not in the books that It's almost like an entirely new chapter of the story.

Not looking forward to the withdrawal symptoms between the end of Season #1 in two weeks and the beginning of Season #2.

Yah I dunno, I have a hard time buying the whole taking care of the old folks home in a zombie apox. I don't see it happening, I can see the people working there making it into a fortress, but continuing to take care of what looked like 50-100 seniors when food is probably scarce, I dunno. A bit far fetched imo.

Besides the "gang" leader (who was the custodian at the nursing home) and the guy shot in the leg with an arrow(a nurse), I thought most of the young people there were relatives of the elderly. The "gang" leader said that many of them were checking on their family and figured that it was safer to stay there. He also said that they pretended to be gang members to keep the hostile non-zombies (paraphrasing) away.

I think it was the director/producer/writer's intention to play with the audience's biases towards minorities and accent the meaning of family in the hispanic culture. One could argue that the creative team swapped one stereotype (fear of the gang-banger) for another (the extended Hispanic family).

While it seem plausible that they wouldn't abandon their elderly relatives, the scene doesn't work due to the less than stellar acting by Guillermo (the "gang" leader).

I like the show so hate to sound overly grumpy but it seems they gave script approval to the rainbow coalition. How long before the heroic gay veteran with Tourettes shows up? (My guess is that it will be Davy from the Billy Joel song). Or the Muslim abortion doctor who entered the country illegally? And, of course, it will be interesting to see if the TSA screeners (the ATL does have a big airport) will be portrayed as "normal" with travelers as zombies who want to kill and eat them, or the other way around.
