The U

I'm watching this on ESPN and I've shocked even myself on how bad and out of control this program was. I forgot a lot about this. There were some bad mofos on that team. Can you imagine the press they would have received in todays 24 hour news cycle. I laugh to think about it. Nowadays, we get bent out of shape if a player gets a DWI.

Out of curiosity...

general35, how old are you?

(I think people my age (36) have n problem remembering how bad the U was.)

Cant stant ou. aggy is a joke. But I truley disdain miami with a passion. And I felt that way before to Cotton Bowl loss. What is even more hard to stomach is how they make no excuses. Players from the hood get an opportunity to play div 1 football and can't conduct themselves better than that. They, are truly a disgrace. And to think, we make fun of guys like Tebow.

I saw it and was so disgusted. The worst part is that those guys now act like it was the greatest coolest thing in the world to act that way...including stealing. They are proud of it, even now and act like it is really funny. The only person on the whole show not proud was their AD.

Makes me so proud of our program that is not perfect but darn close under Mack's reign and generating so much money while focusing on good character as well as talent when recruiting.

Miami epitomized for years the decline of sportsmanship and the concept of the student athelete. Hopefully Randy Shannon and their new leadership can get them back on a path that does not demonstrate such overt thuggery (practiced without remorse). It seems like maybe he is succeeding, which is great for college football and civility in general.

Judging by the lack of contrition even today for their conduct in the January 1991 Cotton Bowl, it seems that many Miami football alums of that era probably do not buy into the idea that winning can be done with dignity. It is amazing that so many are not mature enough even in their late 30's to early 40's now to recognize this fact.

the whole idea that those guys promoted during that show of inner city kids 'showing the way they felt' is a disgrace to the overwhelming majority of inner city kids who play D-1 ball and do/did it with class; what a lame excuse for thuggery.

All the Unsportsmanlike rules are the direct result of Miami and that '90 season! And I refuse to acknowledge the 'U'!!

Kosar was not in good shape...I didn't know he was such a train wreck...like Joe Namath's younger brother or something...tragic....

Hated the U back then, but I did forgive them for all past transgressions the way they stood up to the Boz and harrassed he and Halloway at their hotel, telling them they were going to kick his ***.

I didn't know anything about the financial aid scandal before watching.

You have to blame Jimmy and Erickson for allowing that mess. Especially the off-the-field stuff. My question is what would Schnellenberger have done? He built the team from nothing, he could have taken care of the off the field stuff.

Weird how he jumped to nothing, so quickly. It was a possibliity of a job owning a possible USFL franchise? Weird move.

Except for when they played ND and OU I always cheered for Miami to lose. the justice of that 1987 Fiesta Bowl was karmic. They were as crooked as OU in its hey day and if not for SMU would have been given the death penalty.

Howard got the whole thing going, but Jimmy deserves full credit for letting it descend into Thug U. Jimmy Johnson has openly admitted that nothing in his life measured up to the importance of winning ball games. That included his marriage and raising his sons. This guy wouldn't pull a baby out of a burning house unless it furthered his career in some way. When he saw that the thug image was not only intimidating opponents, but also attracting other talented, thuggish players to the U, he wasn't about to rein it in. I wonder how many of those players learned how to be better men from Jimmy? Judging from these interviews, not many. Only one of them appeared to have caught on that Johnson was "all business". Think about Mack's talk to the team after beating USC, telling them not to let it be the biggest thing in their lives, but to concentrate on being good men. Miami can have their image, I'll take ours.

im 38, i was at the 91 cotton bowl freezing my *** off and stayed the entire game. i was one of the few spectators left. my point was all of the out of control nonsense...coaches being arrested, extortion, armed robbery, gangster u. theu were actually a lot worse than ou imo even during the boz days. a lot of the crimes were not reported.

I too was amazed at how blatent Jimmy Johnson was in his encouragement of Miami's behavoir. In the footage of the AD's press conference, Jimmy had a look in his eye like "if I could I would kill you and feed your body parts to the players".

Kosar looked like he just got hit by a plane.

I always wanted to see Johnson in a better light since I knew his son that played for us in the early '80's....but, really, it was his doing (allowing) that got thug-U into gear.
Amazing to me they all are so proud of their actions all these years later....no, I don't think any of guys 'get it'....including HAPPY GO LUCKY Jimmy sitting there on a beach in Hawaii (or whereever he was...)
They brought college football to the lowest level it's EVER gone to...and don't even realize it....because, they WON...very similar to our neighbors to the NORTH (********!!!)

I hope Miami never wiggles it's way back to the top...their fans still leave a bad taste in my mouth and that was almost twenty years ago....THESE ARE NOT GOOD PEOPLE!!!

as I watched the movie I was thinking that Barry and Jimmy really are brothers. They each had the same attitude toward their players. Father figure, let you get away with everything off the field, just as long as you do the right thing between the lines.

They even brought out that "Jimmy was the first black Head Coach" routine I've heard about Barry before.

Truly amazing how these two men have been so bad for the futures of their players, while at the same time getting these exact same players to be so incredibly disciplined on the field.

And winning percentages, out of this world!

Absolutely 180 degrees from Mack. Would be interesting to hear from Barry's players to see if they're just as stupid 20 years later as well.

don't you guys think Kosar has some illness? I thought maybe he has a brain injury, too many concussions? I don't think they would do an interview with someone who is drunk.

Yes I agree Jimmy and Barry are just alike. "Just Win Baby!!!"
I never really realized how much Jimmy encouraged that behavior before watching the show last night.
They caused alot of rule changec in the NCAA.

The things that movies are made of. I don't mind Miami. They talked trash and backed it up. I was at the cotton bowl, freezing my butt off during the Shock the Nation tour. I had no problem with how lopsided the score was; as a fan I thought, "We better work harder next year if we want to be elite". Miami, regardless of whether you lied their "style", was the benchmark for coming in and destroying the opposing team.

Holden, this would have been the perfect combination, the swagger on the field, and act as decent human beings off the field. But they only got the on the field stuff correct.
