The Texas Longhorns vs. Scattebo and some 10 other guys -- Preview

Skattebo concerns me a bit.

We'll have to be solid on our tackling technique with him: he seems like a bowling ball who runs through or bounces off arm tackles.

Their QB can run too. All in all, we'll have to play a very disciplined game on defense.
He should. Contrary to the thread title, he is a more H-type back and complements the QB.

Labels, labels, labels.... :idk:

Dude certainly runs like a fullback.

And he's short and squatty.

I watched the highlights of the Big 12 championship game against Iowa St. Scattebo is amazing. He had a couple of looong runs where he broke multiple tackles. Literally 2/3 of his 1500+ yards this season are after contact. We better wrap up.

And bring the wood. Skattebo likes to lay a hit on defenders, he needs to receive a memorable Texas pounding as well.
K needs to pull the game film of our visit to Charlottesville and watch the worst beating Ricky ever took; or as Rick Lantz told me when he handed me 50 yardline tickets to "watch the *** kicking coming your way" - and it was.

We're looking at something like the Earl Campbell offense--on their part.

You know they're going to run Scattebo at you.
We know they're going to run Scattebo at us.
It's can we stop him or slow him down.

Earl left, Earl right, Earl up the middle.
Scattebo left, Scattebo right, Scattebo up the middle.

The ASU QB has some mobility. Some think his passing is good. I think it's just ok.

Being an old PAC - 10 team, it will be interesting to see if ASU runs the old "Student Body Left" or "Student Body Right" with Scattebo. USC used to run to National Championships on that play. Scattebo's tough, fast, difficult to bring down, and short (he could hide behind all those pulling linemen).

Never considered them "an old PAC 10 team"; an old WAC team? yes. Like A&M is looking for the next Bear Bryant, ASU is still looking for the next Frank Kush and creampuff WAC schedule.

Your punishment for some crime:

A Summer workout with Frank Kush, or a Summer workout with Frank Medina? Both in a foul mood that day...

???

I think ASU is a sleeping giant based on numbers and geography.

They may be the largest university in the nation. They're in an above-average football recruiting state, with U of A known as a basketball school. They're right next door to the #2 recruiting grounds in the nation (California). Big stadium. Good facilities. $$ decent (I think).

Historically, they've just never got it together on the big scale, and couldn't take down USC.

Kush was a "psycho" overachiever who got more out of less talent (on average) than even Bill Snyder or Gary Patterson.

To my knowledge, Kush never had those 100 pound vests you were privileged to wear while climbing the ropes under Memorial Stadium or running the 78 rows of steps.

Where have such good-natured softies gone in today's coaching world...?

ASU's schedule is very similar to Clemson in that they had a pretty easy go of things. They've only played 5 teams with a winning record going 4-1 in those games. Their overall opponents record is 74-83 with an overall average margin of victory being 11.8 ppg. Considering the weak schedule I'd think they would win most by more than that, but they overall won most games by 8 points or less with the exception of 3 blowouts which skewed the overall average.

While the ACC is weak, I believe the Big 12 is weaker and while we should have blown the doors off Clemson, we only won by two touchdowns. I believe ASU is in for a great awakening on 1/1 when they face the Texas defense. Men against boys.
They were 1-0 against the SEC (Miss. St.). Their two best wins, imo, were against ISU, and BYU. Not the toughest of schedules.

Arguably, the Horns schedule was not that tough either. We lost twice to the best team we played. (However much I think the Horns were a better team than Georgia, they did win twice against Texas. I think Smart has some voodoo/mojo over Sark that must be broken by a Bourbon St. sorceress.)

BTW, Skattebo is by far the best runner the Horns will have faced all year. If they don't wrap him up and hold on for dear life, it will be a long, sad day for the horns.

At any rate, our talent level and depth are much better overall. The Horn defense should be good enough to allow our offense to outscore ASU. Bingo, Horns win!
