India explores setting up rupee trade accounts with Russia to soften sanctions blow - sources
Indian officials are concerned that vital supplies of fertilizer from Russia could be disrupted as sanctions intensify, threatening India's vast farm sector.
In "Devastating" Move, US Weighs Sanctions On Russia's Central Bank As Germany Backs "Targeted" Removal Of Russia From SWIFT | ZeroHedge
The German statement indicates that Europe's most important nation, and top importer of Russian gas...
... is still not on the same page as most of its other European peers realizing that an overnight cutoff of Russian gas (something which a SWIFT expulsion would spark) would lead to a crippling hit to the German economy, and instead is seeking a targeted SWIFT cutoff, which course is impossible for the "all or nothing" system. As for the well-known reasons behind Germany's opposition Erik Meyersson, an economist at Svenska Handelsbanken, put it best: “The EU isn’t on board with removing Russia from SWIFT for one thing because the EU isn’t on board with letting go of Russian energy."
Russia may nationalize property of US, EU citizens in response to sanctions - Medvedev
Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev speculated that Russia may nationalize property of people registered in the US, the EU and other unfriendly jurisdictions amid new anti-Russian sanctions.

He noted that Russia is being threatened with arrests of assets of Russian citizens and companies abroad - "just like that, without any sanctions," "in a carpet fashion," "out of spite." According to the politician, "this must be responded to in a quite symmetric manner."

With sanctions citizens around the world will pay including Americans. The effect on Putin will be minimal. He is super rich.

I wonder if the Swiss banks will join in the sanctions? Historically, they would not. The identity of Swiss bank depositors and clients is kept strictly secret. African dictators, Russian oligarchs, organized crime syndicates, etc all have money safe and sound in Swiss banks.

There are five NATO nations with larger economies than Russia. A sanctions war hurts them a hell of a lot more than it hurts the west.

There is a real war going on, and Putin has two choices- win it or exile. The Ukrainians will not win, if Russia presses it, but they won’t go down easy and it is clear that there is no segment of any size in Ukraine that wishes to be a Russian client or territory.

Musk’s Starlink mean that Russia can’t hide civilian atrocities from the world. How ugly is Russia willing to get?

Hey, Putin- if you don’t want for Russia to be treated like a second rate nation, how about trying to not act like one?

That was a brilliant move by Musk.
Yea sure he will benefit from it but it still was amazing and FAST

Yeah (In my best Joy Behar snarky whiney voice) but my Starlink service has already been delayed by over 6 months. I guess now I can expect another 6 months since Elon will be shipping the already short supply receivers to the Ukraine.

It's all theater until the western countries stop buying Russian gas and oil, which is where they make their foreign currency from, and which contributes half of the GDP. Stopping hydrocarbon purchases would be a truly effective move, not pitching Putin from the judo leagues.

But countries can't do that. Germany gets half their gas from Russian thanks to them shutting down their coal and nuke plants, and they're not going to shiver in the dark. And Depends isn't going to deal with 7 dollar a gallon gas here in the US if Russia's 10 million barrels of oil per day is off the market, pushing the price per barrel up to 200 bucks.

So the US will boldly say we won't buy Russian vodka - while importing 800,000 barrels of Russian oil per day.

Did Germany really decide to shut down nuclear power plants because of Japan's Fukushima disaster? Are there a lot of tsunamis in Germany?? Everyone in the free world needs to get off oil not on it more! (Not solely a criticism of Germany.)

Have not seen you post here before, but, we cannot just get off of Oil (snaps fingers). You would have no clothing to wear, no food, no fuel. The US would starve to death and kill each other by Christmas if we just got off Oil. Rubber, Lycra, most food raw materials, fiberglass, steel production, anything that has to be mined, plastic, rubber, nylon, all artificial flavoring, and vitamins, acids, oils that are manmade. They all go away now if we just "get off Oil". Don't buy into virtue signaling narratives. No country can "get off Oil".

Fukushima was in 2011. I wasn't saying snap fingers get off oil. I was saying don't use the last 11 years to slowly get more dependent on oil. Should have used the 2010s to build more nuclear power plants.

I mis read what you meant then. My bad. Yes we need more Nuclear Power Plants, and more Energy independence.

Yep, it was the main driver of them going non-nuke. Now they either buy Russian oil and gas, or buy electricity from Poland, which is generated from burning very dirty coal. It's what happens when you turn your country's energy policy over to a 17 year old woke scold who starved herself from worry into a gnome.

I don't understand how liberals (like Sanders, Warren, Thunberg) can claim they want clean energy but oppose nuclear power. It's a massive carbon-neutral energy source! If safety is the concern, don't stay in test mode longer than one should, don't skimp on design, and don't build next to an ocean that has tsunamis. Three Mile Island is the best case study. But one, two, three incidents over 400 something active reactors is not enough to jump off the nuclear bandwagon.

A. I concur. That's twice in two days...wtf?
B. I was essentially referred to as a stupid, toothless okie for making the energy independence comment a few days ago. Gird your loins!

Nuclear is more risky but it is far more eco friendly. Right?
