The Rice series
I had a chance to sit behind home plate this weekend with a Rice buddy and really enjoyed the games. Two teams with a lot of upside really slugged it out. If Rice's pitching gets healthy, I would not want to face them down the road. I overheard Augie sharing those same thoughts after the game. That said, in spite of some really sloppy defense for our Texas team, our hitting was really good. Most of those Rice arms were terrific and yet the Horns were disciplined at the plate and had some great at bats. It was amazing to both of us how the Texas hitters just waited for the one bad pitch and then drilled it every time. God must have been enjoying the series because he gave us bonus time!
Most importantly I want to thank Augie and Wayne Graham for resuming this series. There are so many Texas fans in Houston with connections to Rice that this seems like a no brainer, yet we managed to lose it for a few years. For college baseball fans in Texas, it gets no better than this storied rivalry. The Rice fans can give us a hard time sometimes, but it it the kind of grief that is driven by admiration and respect and not stupidity and jealousy like those dorks in community college station. As it was explained to me, for them, we are their measuring stick. It is my understanding that Rice will return to Austin for 4 in 2017 and I hope the powers that be make this an annual event going forward.
If you were on the fence and decided to pass, don't make that mistake again as it was a really good weekend.

It won't be an annual weekend series until the Astros College Classic (or whatever that tournament is called now) is eliminated.
That is why we played them this weekend, yet they don't come to Austin until 2017.
Personally, I prefer the Stanford series and several others to Rice.

Re: The Rice series [re: Tecolote]
I'd rather have the games be Tuesday affairs. Texas is going to keep getting sent to Rice for regionals when they don't host.
I'd rather have another quality series (or a home and away) with a California team. I admit I am biased, it is much easier to get California than to Texas for me.
I'd rather see Texas travel to LSU/Miami instead of another four game series with Rice.
It is (IMO) much harder to find a quality ISR/RPI opponent to play on Tuesday. Rice was perfect for that.
