The Politics of Obamacare

Assuming it's a true story and assuming it's not an outlier but an actual consistent cost of hospital stays, Obamacare will not change that cost one cent. In fact, the cost will likely rise.

To be fair he doesn't leave the thread, he just ignores the request or starts deflecting. Kind of like what he's doing now. Leaving the thread would actually be the preferred reaction.

So you're admitting that what you asserted was annecdotal, non-supported evidence?

Honestly, I'm not sure about that one. I don't trust anyone in the insurance business. I think the medical industry should turn toward more of a pay-for-service model. Instead, we are trending toward some nebulous entity that pays for everything (now insurance, but trending toward the federal nanny state). The result is that parents shuffle their kids to the doctor for a cold. Ten people get paid for that service and the costs are out of this world. How about taking care of the kid at home with some Chicken Soup and if you have something serious go to the doctor? Pay a deductible up to a certain amount and let insurance cover the serious problems. Keep the feds out of it and let the states put together a good plan for their citizens. It is no business of the federal government (like education).

Very good precise summary, Crockett. So, it seems what we need is more access to basic, low cost or free heath care. That one does not seem so hard to address. Not sure why we are throwing out the baby with the bathwater. If we can reduce the government's role and insurance companies role, I think we bring costs down overall, which was the point to begin with, right?

Shiner: I think you are onto something. I've hear anecdotes that there is pretty good, cheap, pay as you go medical care in Mexico. I wish everybody had good job skills, a good job, and access to health care insurance you and I enjoy. If we don't have the resources for universal care, lets be energetic about providing low cost alternatives to the emergency room. I've heard from a physician who works part time in a community clinic that patients who come to her pay $35 (not copay -- that covers the visit) and she says the patients are grateful, take her advice and can generally be treated with cheap generics. Insured customers have access to better medicines but don't think twice about asking for stronger medicine when they haven't properly followed directions on the first.

Right, and then a huge insurance company makes a profit that adds nothing to the process, and the doctors have to do a bunch of paperwork and wait a long time to get paid. Makes no sense.
