The Myth of Jeff Fisher

Not trying to argue, but how does the NY Giants win in the Super Bowl correspond to the premise of this thread? I don't ever remember a Giants team as an offensive force and they won it this year on the heels of their defense. I understand what a statistical outlier is but this doesn't seem to be the case here. Just wondering how you would respond.

The Giants defense stepped up big time late in the season. Their big 4 stat rankings were 14 scoring, 16 yardage on offense, 17 scoring and 7 yardage on defense. Statistically they were probably the worst among all 42 SB champions. But this was an obvious anomaly. It's certainly not an absolute rule, and I outlined that in my first post. My premise was that you have to strive to get up there in those areas to give yourself a chance. Fisher doesn't do this.

Jeff Fisher is a good coach. Got his team to the Super Bowl. Made it to the playoffs this year, with a team that should not have made it ($40 million under the cap). They’ve won 18 games the past two years with teams that were predicted to finish last in their division.

He’s made it through a transition from Houston, then to Memphis, then to Nashville.

Their unis are terrible. Their cheap-*** owner is worse (buying the Oilers for 10 grand, then stealing them from Houston).

He was one foot away from winning the Super Bowl. The only Super Bowl in franchise history.

He is not the general manager. He was not responsible for the Titans miserable Salary Cap goofs, which caused them to cut dozens of players over the years.

McNair was often-injured, and they had some down years. Derrick Mason has been the only decent receiver in 10 years, and he was never a big-time player.

If he was the one who drafted Pacman Jones with the #5 pick, then he deserves to suck.

If they got a new coach, who would they get? Seriously, there’s not much out there – the Cowboys even picked retread Wade Phillips. The Chargers got stuck with Norv Turner. Both did well because they had superior talent. Fisher is a good coach compared to today’s stock (not compared to HOF coaches of all-time).

There are many reasons for VY’s sophomore slump. I say injuries and lack of receivers was the #1 reason. You don’t open things up if you’re #1 target is Brandon Jones. If they did, I promise you they miss the playoffs.

There’s different philosophies for winning. Offense & Defense & Special Teams wins championships. If you look at the Top 5 single-season offenses of all-time, none of them won the Championship. Of the Top 5 defenses, probably Buddy Ryan’s Eagles were the only ones falling short. Not sure why this correlates with a supposed Jeff Fisher myth (from where did this arise).

He’s still coach because of his resiliency and ability to rebuild injury & salary-cap ravaged teams.

Once HPSlugga makes a point, you can type until your fingers bleed and you will never change his original impression. You can save youself a lot of effort by realizing that early on.

Input into GM decisions is one thing; control over them is another thing entirely.

As recently as last year, Titan ownership talked about the need to have tension (aka "honest exchange") between the GM and the head coach.

Which "honest exchange" usually meant Reese would, at least in recent years, ignore Fisher's opinion.

I'd be interested to see any information on Reese-Fisher positions in other Titan drafts, if anyone has any.

You are attempting to show that Jeff Fisher is an "average" coach because his numbers equal raw averages in the numerical sense. Why don't you try comparing Jeff Fishers numbers against the numbers of the other head coaches to try and determine if he is an average coach.

I think the general sentiment is that there are not a lot of other coaches doing much better than Fisher has done.

To further everyones point and to wonder more about your "defendable" position, how come you are the only person I have ever heard mention Jeff Fisher as an "average" coach? As a matter of fact, I don't think I've ever heard anything but accolades for the guy.

What I'd like to see before conceding Fisher is an average coach is a comparison of the annual final record versus the predicted record for the Titans for each year Fisher was the coach. My guess is that there will be few years the team performed below expectations, but I would welcome data to show otherwise.
