The most overplayed song in American history.

As of Jan 1, 2000, the most played song in history on American radio was "You've Lost That Loving Feeling," which was written by Barry Mann, Phil Spector, and Cynthia Weil. Although recorded by different artists, the song is the only one in history to be played over 8 million times on the radio. That amounts to about 45 years if the song was played back to back! Three songs were played over 7 million times: Never My Love, Yesterday, and Stand By Me

Don't let the fact that you like SRV cloud your judgment. Tell me the last time you walked into a pool hall, your average bar, or drove around for an hour listening to KLBJ when you did NOT hear that song. I'll wait....

But, I digress.. the thread is in American history.. not Austin history. For that...

Stairway to Heaven, Sweet Home Alabama, Hotel California are all worthy mentions.

Stranglehold? I can't even remember the last time I heard that song... anywhere.

How about the DFW cover band Holy Trinity: Brick House, Word Up, and Play That Funky Music.

Contrasted to the SA cover band Holy Trinity: Santeria, Possum Kingdom, and Sober.

Six songs that need to die, at least in terms of being played live.

My theory on blister in the sun:

At some point in 1994-1995 some random cover band realized that they could add 5-6 minutes to their setlist by simply sticking this song into it. No rehearsal would be required as everyone on the planet already knew the words and there are only 2 bass/guitar parts to the entire song. Further, you could stretch it out to 10 minutes if you REALLY wanted to. Other cover bands quickly got wind of this phenomenon and all of a sudden Blister In The Sun is in every single cover band's setlist. I now hate this song. A lot.

I'll agree with Hotel California. I like the song, but it's played so much I get tired of it.

A few songs in the past decade that could have gotten on the list were "How you remind me" by Nickelback, "Over and Over" by Tim McGram and Nelly, and "Lose Yourself" by Eminem. Each of those had like a 6-month period of time in which you couldn't go a couple of days without hearing it, but thankfully things dropped off after that.

Last post just beat me to it. For awhile there you couldn't turn on a radio without having to suffer through a Girth Brooks disaster. Then he went away, but now he's trying to slither back into the scene. Makes me want to kick a puppy.
