I skipped work to watch that game... The Ghosts of DKR and the football gods awarded me greatly, seeing as I got a job offer and huge pay raise a week to the day later.

Since we have time on our hands,[some of us], I thought this post with the link from rplongett should moved up.

The breakdown of why the '06 Rose Bowl is the greatest college game ever played is a MASTERPIECE, with a capital M! Hit that link now.

Enjoy and

Great opening argument and I agree.

Unless my link limited my ability to see things there was no closing argument.

However the start of the thread was absolutely genius. The facts clearly explained the unbelievable amount of total talent on the field which proves the magnitude of the victory.

Not sure if this has been said, but we should just make Jan 4, 2006 officially Ground Hogs Day and relive the day over and over and over again and again.

Actually it's not a bad idea. Some tavern in town ought to start a Gound Hogs Day every Jan 4th and show the game. I'll show up.

I think if I had died that night around 2 am or so after ten or twenty replays and several Sports Centers, I would have entered the next life the happiest soul on earth... or no longer on earth, as it were.

The thing about USC-Texas is that both teams were giving it their all for the full 60 minutes. Both defenses were mostly doing a good job, even though the final score didn't look like it, because the offenses were just that good by the end of the year where they could put up 30+ on *any* defense if they were on top of their game, which they both were.

The only game that even approached this one was the Nebraska-Miami game on January 1, 1984.

This one was twice as good as that one because everybody knew in advance it was the #1 vs. #2. Nebraska Miami was only for the NC because Texas lost earlier in the day to Georgia.

The only thing that Miami-Nebraska game had extra to it was the surpise decision of Osborne going for two at the end of the game. Gutsy move for sure! He could have kicked the extra point and claimed either a share of the national championship or a disputed national championship. Obviously, we don't know, but there was a chance BOTH polls would have voted his team #1.

Miami was kind of an unknown at this point in time, so many sportswriters might have voted the 11-0-1 'Huskers #1.

You talk about a dream matchup. Nebraska-Texas that year would have been something special, had both teams been healthy.

Texas couldn't keep any running backs healthy all year, and ended up with a nothing offense, at the end, just relying on Jeff Ward's field goals.

Nebraska was awesome on the ground, of course, and what a test that would have been for the Texas defense.

My nominee for the greatest game ever is the '69 Texas/Arkansas game. #1 v #2, national title on the line, and President Nixon in the stands. Just my opinion.

I watched it on a black and white tv in my living room. IT has to be a top two or three.

It deservedly carries the title "Game of the Century".

Great post. I have spent a couple of hours already on it, and haven't seen many of the film clips yet.
Agree this is the greatest game ever, and the reasons are clearly stated at the top of the thread.
I attended the 1969 Texas-Arkansas game, and in some ways these two games were very similar, but coming in the Rose Bowl as the national championship game, and the sheer volume of great players on each team, so many of whom have gone on to be professional stars already, makes this game unique.
Even beyond those facts, the most amazing feature of the 2006 Rose Bowl was the huge number of great plays-plays where a professional quality receiver made a great catch, covered well by a professional quality db, a pass thrown so well by a great qb that it was complete even though great defense was played-over and over, this happened on so many plays in that game. Just incredible, jaw-dropping offensive line play by USC, these things elevate this game to the top of any such discussion.
Show me a game with that much talent on both sides, where that many great plays were made, where there were two very notable win streaks on the line, for the national championship, with that much hype, decided on a miracle play in the last minute, and set in the bowl that is the best by far for setting, atmosphere and tradition-some games have one or more of these features, but none have them all.
This was the greatest college game of all time.

As one of the more "mature" posters on HF, I have seen all the classic games back to 1963. Many good candidates mentioned on this thread but IMO the '06 RB is the best

You can't tell without the replay, but on the play that is snapped with 8:27 left in the 3rd quarter, Byrd catches a pass, h is knee hits, he gets up a drives for a first down. I don't have a HD recording or I'd do a screen capture.

I have 71 NU/OU on videocassette, so I've seen that one too. That was a great, back-and-forth battle also.

Without doubt, 71 GOC and 1/4/06 are the two best games in college football history.

SC fan here,

Even though that was far and away the worst game in the history of USC athletics, that's a pretty cool page whoever did that thorough breakdown, especially for Texas fans.

Thanks Pete!
